  2. There is still a place for Usenet. usenet vs web on Is Usenet Dying? · · Score: 2

I firmly believe that there is still a place for Usenet.

For one Usenet provides a hierarchy of discussion groups with the same basic rules. Web based discussion is fine for some areas of discussion. However every site has a different set of rules and is scattered over many sites. It is faily clear on how to find a discussion that pertains to a certain topic. With the web I'd have to search around yahoo until I happen upon a good web site that has a discussion forum.

The fact that usenet is not "centeralized" eliminates the single point of failure or control. If for some reason slashdot.org disappeared tomorrow for some strange reason where would I point my browser to and hit reload every 10 seconds? If I didn't like how slashdot was evolving what choice do I have other than to just leave?

I think the web and web based discussion forums are great, but there is not other better source for topical discussions. When ever I have a technical problem I always search Dejanews.

  3. leery... on Ford Giving Free PCs to All Employees · · Score: 4

For one I'm leery of the privacy concerns now that the "company" owns the machine that is supposed to be for "home use". I try to keep a clear distinction on what is work related and business related.

I have a business laptop and for all intents and purposes, it does everything I need it to do for work related purposes. I take it home and do work at home. I have a dial-up account with the company that gets me to the corporate intranet and internet access through the company proxy. Having a "home" PC from the company really would *not* add any "functionaly".

I also have a "home" PC, which I own. I have a dial-up account and email address with a personal ISP. I think the distiction is important because of privacy concerns. Knowing alittle about computer forensics and security, I would want to keep my personal files, browsing habbits, etc on a machines that can't be revoked by the company for analysis at anytime.

There seems to be a growing trend towards providing services for employees for their "conveniece". I read an article about how companies are using concierge services to help out employees with getting flowers, planning parties etc. The premise was that for every $1.00 spent by the company on the concierge service they company would recieve $1.75 worth of work out of its employees. With company t-shirts, cups, parties, home PC, etc I think we take one step towards being owned by a cult. In the article it tells of a woman who was emotionally distraught that the company was providing all these services just to get more productivity out of her not because they thought she was a great person.

    ... or obsessive compulsive.

I agree that you should be cautions when using your credit card anywhere and check your statements etc. However everyday seems a bit much. I have several credit/debit cards. Checking all of them everyday would mean I spend more time in overhead than any "savings" of having a credit card in the first place.

Do you check you checking account everyday? Do you check the stash of money under your bed everyday too?

I think the point is the "open source"-ness of it. Developing cool PDA apps would be easier on a linux/GNU based PDA than on WinCE/Visual Studio etc. Personally the coolest thing about the Palm platform is all the cool little apps the people come up with. The Palm is the perfered hobbist PDA. If there was a linux/GNU/open-source based PDA it would be the ultimate geek toy to muck around with.

With wireless IP (ricochet) and CDPD... it could be a pretty cool world... code up a paging/alert type app that monitors your servers and stuff... or whatever...

  8. missing the point on First LPI Certification Exam · · Score: 1

I think most of the posts are really missing the point.

Discrediting the general genre of certifications is one thing. I can accept that this type of debate will never be over. This is not unique to Linux, computers or IT. It applies to any professional industry. CPA;accounting etc...

The real significance is the recognition that this is a useful thing. I think this is a good thing for the Linux community. It may or may not fully creditentialize an individual, but its another step towards creditentializing Linux in the professional IT world. Realize that this is mostly a step for HR and upper management.

For one I'm oblivious to advertising most of the time anyway. (notable exception: Network Associates: "who's watching your network") The name dropping type of advertisments at sporting events don't faze me.

Secondly I think its an interesting proposition to put advertising control into the hands of content providers. It will probably change the way people pay for advertising, but thats over saturated as it is. The premise that this is a technology that could generate more advertising dollars is nice if they use it to increase the quality of content.
