  1. Re:[OOT] Works great?? on AOL May Be Forced To Open AIM · · Score: 1

I just wanted to point out the reason why you can't see away messages in gaim is because of a limitation of the toc protocol. Its one of the things that we can't yet do in linux...

  2. Re:Zzzzz... on AOL May Be Forced To Open AIM · · Score: 1

Gaim may be open source but the protocol that it uses isn't. We know everything about the toc protocol but it is very limited to what it can do. The windows clients use the oscar protocol and it is a lot better but aol never released how oscar works. It has been reverse engineered to a degree and mostly works now with gaim but now aol has blocked clients other than its own using oscar so we really haven't gotten anywhere. My point is that we could gain a lot from having this opened up.

  3. yes it is true on AOL Shuts Down 3rd Party IM Software? · · Score: 1

To all the people who say its still working for them try turning on the experimental oscar support. If it doesn't crash in a few minutes you'll get an IM that says you are being disconnected. So far I haven't gotten anything in toc so maybe they are just blocking oscar.

"We are looking to become the Windows of the campus Webtop," Muir says. ouch! their goal is to become one of the least respected and biggest moneymaking companies in the world, I think he lays out their plans pretty clearly.

2.2.17 fixes some silly bug that caused SMP machines to crash when plugging in a ps2 mouse. This bug was introduced in 2.2.16 and its stopped me from playing q3! ...until now.

  6. no single player! on Rocket Arena For Quake 3 Arena Released · · Score: 1

maybe its just me but I'm a little upset that theres no single player. You see I'm in one of those places in the US that can't get above a 28.8 connection and frankly I don't find quake very fun with a 500 ping. I'd rather play against bots than go online and get killed over and over. so I spend all night downloading this beast, unpack it and play it a bit, and now I'm gonna get rid of it cuz its filling up my hard drive. I love games like this, but playing them online ruins it when you have a slow connection.

  7. the book was good... on The Battlefield Earth Contest · · Score: 3

The only good thing I can say about it is that had you read the book before seeing the movie, it makes it much more enjoyable. The book is excellent, over 1000 pages long and a great story. I've read it twice and its one of my favorites. L. Ron Hubbard is an amazing author and the book is great. Cutting it down to 2 hours was a bit of a challenge you could say and as a result the movie makes no sense, but theres a lot more to it than the movie showed.

I agree that they may have done a few good things to make computers accessable to everyone, but thats not the point. The point is about their unfair business practices that got them here. They may have helped a few people use computers, but what about all the companies they drove out of business? You gotta wonder what innovations they all would have come up with.
