I can't help but think that maybe Java was sold to the wrong crowd, and expectations were really high. Maybe it's just me -- but I was under the impression in the early days that Java would be the cross platform / thin client/ browser delivered GUI builder of the future. Heck, even Corel took a spin at doing WP office in Java.

(If I went to the store looking for a wrench and got sent home with a hammer -- yes I would be pissed when I found out that it was hard to tighten bolts with my new hammer.)

Java has been proven to have an advantage on the server end, and programmers will swear that Java is the ultimate tool to use with networking...(And yet I do not see any Java based web servers with a high percentage at Netcraft.)

I have yet to see any usable "desktop apps" written in Java -- although the people I hire to build apps always say "I wish we could do this in Java"....But when you say OK do it in Java -- in turns a small project into something akin to the moon landing.

What it boils down to IMHO is that I will just sit back on the fence and see if the next Apache type "killer server app" is written in Java....Or maybe the next Quicken type "killer client app" is written in Java --- until then I will keep my opinion that Java is being used to teach the kids in school proper programming, but in the real world -- it boils down to still chunking out C and C++ when you need to get the job done.
