    depends on the importance of a system. The dollars spent maintaining a system that has low impact and few users should never exceed the importance of that system. On the flip side - if maintaining an important high impact system requires certain modules be re-written in order to "clean the bugs", then so be it. Any diversions or impacts should be evident during the code walk throughs with your technical project managers.

    If you have high dollar programmers maintaining uselesss or un-used systems -- their is a budget cut just waiting to happen. (kind of like installing a sprinkler system on the lawn of a condemed building...)

    Alas -- not even Diablo II is worth keeping Windows in my house...errr...if I wanted to play games I could buy a NIntendo or PS2 or Dreamcast...But for my tastes...xmame works fine thank you...

    I may be from the old school...But I would assume the easy answer to this question is:

    Your loyalty ends when the paychecks end -- anything less and then you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Why does it have to be any more difficult than that?

    I read a funny article about something like this a while back.

    The article talks about the future voting machines of the 21st century, and what OS they may use.

    I had to laugh at the GNU/Linux voting software solution:

    No matter how much I dislike M$oft....I do not see any problem with this. If a company wants to charge for a product -- they at least reserve the right to ensure their user community paid for that said product...Hell thats why I started using Linux in 1996...I refuse to use "warez" or "pirate"software (an old fashioned law-abiding citizen I am -- err except when I download OOP stuff from Napster because the record store people tell me that a certain CD is out of print -- and my chances of finding it in the used bin are about the same as winning the lottery -- and a copy on ebay will cost me more than my car payment)...so it got very expensive keeping up with the bugfixes from Micro$oft....I can deal with a lot of Linux quirks for the money it saves me.

    Don't take this wrong (I have always been an avid reader) however -- after I read a book from cover to cover -- it becomes much like an empty soup can...Next time I want soup, I am going to go for another can that is full...The old can would just take up space if I did not throw it out...(Hell - every time I move, there are more boxes of books than anything). Dealing in buying/selling used books is a good way to pass on something that is "old" to you and give/sale it to someone who can experience it as "new". Much the same way people have garage sales to get rid of things that have value but are of no use to the original owner.

    Or has the whole sci-fi/futuristic genre gone downhill in the 90's. I am hard pressed to remember the last "great" sci-fi movie. With the sad fact being the fact that to me "Waterworld" and "The Postman" does not look to bad after all....They may be badly acted or directed but least their is a little passion in those movies. Hell I even loved Battlestar Galactica.

    I for one got all excited when I heard Conectiva had ported apt to work with RPM's. I had to install it and give it a go. A week later, not to bad I must say. The only negative thing I have to say is that Conectiva's web site does not seem to get updated very often (no security update list or FAQ, or Knowledge base, no nothing...) However -- the most important is the distribution -- and so far it rocks!!! It seems like the best of both worlds so far. Cross my fingers. (Will Madrake convert to this for 7.3? -- I wonder)

    Funny -- I have been running 2.4.0-testX (2-12) and I have a feeling that 2.4.0-final will not change my life a whole lot.....(BTW -- my system seems to like 2.4.0-test4....thats a good vintage.)

    Needless to say -- since everything seems to be working great on my systems, the actual release will be anti-climatic. BTW -- Resierfs has been on my system for a while also.
    You have got to like the fact that an "official" release in the linux world is mearly a formality.

    I am sure Msoft does not include many apps with W2K..(Even with the $800 "5 client" version.) If all Linux included was notepad, paint, and a few small apps then it would be an easy fit into a 150 megs....With microsoft you have to go back to the store and buy more apps with more money...Or download crappy crippleware.

    this sux....the Inferno tetris game is to close to real time speed --- After playing those Java tetris games, I thought I was a pretty good tetris player....But all along the only reason I was doing any good was because I was running at 1/2 speed (because of Java)...

    I think people have a lot clearer picture on what works and what does not work. If you have a great product, sell it cheaper than the stores, offer free or not outrageous shipping -- then the sky is the limit. (I had a much nicer experience with my online holiday shopping the last 2 years than I did fighting the mobs at the mall)...On the other hand if you are going to petition $40 million VC, go public, and yet have no business model or viable product....I think people are starting to realize that maybe the internet is not the place for that. (Now only if they would realize that people are getting very sick of the flashy banner ads...hell it looks like a Nascar race through a trailer park on most sites these days....hell, I would be more likely to click on a well versed text based hyperlink add than some god awful animated gif that gives me motion sickness..google has the right idea.)

    Bottom Line: Anyone who sees a future in charging money for 1's and 0's will most likely go broke searching for the almighty dollar. People who use the internet as an alternate store front for their already successful business -- or fringe product, they will have a better go.

    Wow...I have seen many messages where people say that the transition from Photoshop to Gimp is a rocky one with less features....But I have a slightly different story...I have used gimp for a while now (at home) and feel pretty comfortable with it -- however I just got a shiny copy of Photoshop on this "nice" NT machine here at work -- and having never used Photoshop before -- I am at a complete loss to get anything done....Good thing I have Exceed....I think if I want to get any work done today I best fire up Gimp from one of the *nix boxen sitting around here collecting dust...(Now if only I could have such a comparable option to replace Excel, Quicken, IE5, Lotus Notes, Homesite --- I would be a happy camper.)

    Seriously, isn't what the Spammer did much worse than what Metnick did?

    How could it be any worse than stealing someone's cell phone service?? I am sick of hearing that Kevin did nothing wrong. I am sure you would feel different if he "duped" YOUR cell phone and was making calls on YOUR dime. Or if he hacked into your system and decided to take personal copies of anything that looked important.

    I by no means advocate spam -- I personally wish they would coral all the spammers, telemarketers, people who think it is fun to port scan me and try to break into my system, and other con man and thugs --- and put them all in line to boost George Dubbya's numbers in Texas.
