What a fucking coincidence...... Zuckerberg is a GOD! Put him on an altar!
Seems you are obsessed with Facebook... You watch it on TV, read about it on forums and go see movies about it? Wow man, you must be hella-good friend-stock
thats true... i don't agree with the 'linux on the desktop is dead' statement... only way it would be dead is if there was no active development.. which clearly isn't the case.
my point was, there is no point man for the linux community. So the community as a whole lacks vision. Sure there are a few key players, and some money bouncing around but there is no clear leader and never will be. Its very openness prevents that. It will always be on the fringe, because there is nothing to keep you on Linux once you go.
Apple is a company with a leader, they set clear goals and work towards that... While I see your point, I don't think you can really draw comparisons. I don't think we will ever see the age of "linux on the desktop", however since Android, ChromeOS and all that mature we may see an "age of [linux in disguise]" on the desktop. My point being, a community can't drive the market to linux, but a big player like G certainly can... IF they have the right people with the right vision.
Yes, but this is a stand-alone device anyone can slap on their dash... like when the GPS came out of the dash and became stand-alone... So I don't need to buy a brand new lexus to get the technology.. I can spend a few hundy and have it annoy me in my Jeep..
everything is farther away which means you need 2 cars instead of 1 or 0. you drive more miles so you buy more gas and spend more on maintenance or buy a new car faster with less trade in value.
taxes are less than in places like NYC, but you have to pay for everything that taxes pay in NYC. things like garbage pickup.
visiting people who live close to the boonies i've noticed that food is more expensive since you have to truck it farther to the store.
then there are the little things like schools tend to suck in the boonies compared to the big cities and their suburbs. if you care about your kids being in the top 10% of earners then NYC, NoVa or a few other places are the ones to go for schools.
there are no starbucks or whole foods markets in the boonies. only crappy mass produced crap.
nothing to do other than stay home all day when you're not working
crappy internet access
crappy medical care. big cities have the good hospitals and doctors
I am in the 'boonies'. We have 2 cars but really only use one.. We don't rack a lot of miles, and when they break its easier to find a neighbour who can help ya out with a fix, instead of paying $85/h labour.
Our taxes are cheaper, and we get Garbage pickup.. the taxes pay for everything like they do in a city.. but its cheaper becuase there is 1800 people insteaof 1, 800,000 people.
We have coffee in the country, it just doesn't cost 5 dollars a cup.. and we have the same grocery stores as anywhere else.. only since its the country the produce is cheaper because its local, the same with the meat..
Our schools are excellent, Country doesnt mean slack-jaw idiots... our schools don't have barbed fences and dont go in to lockdown every other week. Everyone knows everyone else, so the stranger-danger isn't peaking red all the time.. our kids actually get to play.
When we arent working there is plenty to do, and usually its plenty cheap... if we wanna go woop it up in the city, we still can.
We have high speed internet,
We have good hospitals, As a matter of fact I recently had a VERY sick child.. The local hospital did an amazing job, and when it was time for more help it was a short helicopter ride to a internationally renowned hospital (we were lucky to be 2 hour drive away.. but they flew kids in from Europe to this hospital...
So yes it IS cheaper.. we made the switch a few years ago and went rural.. It does have a few down sides, but I love nature and I love open space... I love seeing the stars at night... so for me its a perfect fit...
When i got in to the workforce, I lived in the city, and worked in the city... as my income grew I decided to get out of the city and make the commute. As the years passed, I grew more and more weary of the drive and decided I would seek work closer to where I was. Then since I no longer had to drive 2 hours each way, I decided to get even more rural. I can't imagine it any other way now, a traffic jam to me is being stuck behind a tractor for 5 minutes on my 20 minute commute.
Being one of a few IT guys in my small town, people are always asking me this or that, and I am able to barter with other local pro's on getting stuff done.
when I first moved out to nowhere, it seemed I was the one guy in town that didnt have a service to offer, now with the introduction of technology to farming, its become quite the resource. From GPS navigated harvesting to PLC controlled feeders and robotic milking machines.. There is a ton of work / money to be made. Sure its not high-finance, but its an essential service and the stress levels are almost nil. With Canada's population density, there is no shortage of rural areas.
...The fact that I saw it on FoxNews shows that I do indeed read FoxNews, as I try to read stories from as many angles as I can. I dont usually reply to myself, but I wanted to reiterate that its not the source of the story that bugs me.. its the way it was conveyed to slashdot readers.
I've got no problem that it was on Fox... I am aware it came through the wire... its the cut and paste that bugs me... The summary begins "Velcroman1 writes... ". Which to me, is an insult to its source. I could care less if the article is biased.
You can borrow money these days.. its quite astonishing... you put up assets and they give you money... A friend of mine leveraged his house to invest 10 grand in an engineering firm, which sold 10 years later for 10 times his stock price... thats 10,000 into 100,000 in ten years,.. not a HUGE windfall.. but it paid off the mortgage of his house and his cottage.. and allowed him to upgrade to some nice waterfront property...
He was not rich when he invested, he was working as a roofer at the time, but decided to invest because he thought it looked like a sound business model... its not 'the rich get richer', its the the guy in debt gets out of debt... So yeah, everyone I know (barring someone with no job) can get there hands on 10 grand to invest... Hell i even borrow money to invest in my retirement RRSP's... the money saved on tax is more what I pay on the loan... Those of us who don't keep our money under the mattress understand that money != equity..
Don't you read posts you reply to? "Can you tell me the last time a citizen was able to successfully use weapons to defend his property from 'intrusion' by any determined authority, local or federal? Rambo fantasies are so lame."
how can a tracking dev ice go missing at all, is the question... "Check this out, its an un-losable golf ball!" - "sweet! where did you get it? i need one of those!" - "I found it"
if not you, then why post? You are killing the internet, go back to your farmville crops and let the discussion continue without you
If someone just wanted to build something, why wouldn't they build something useful, instead of just profitable?
Whats the difference? Seems to me he built a money-making machine... seems pretty useful to me,,,

or for that matter, with dark sunglasses, like 90% of the people who drive while the sun is out
What if you, like me, drive while wearing these: http://rosem.aloak.ca/acatalog/250315.jpg
