It's not that, it's a man thing. Something you wouldn't understand. Human males look at human females tits, asses, and other body parts. I don't expect you to understand it being that you are either female, a eunich, or gay. It's as natural for men to look at tits as it's natural for women to bitch about it while wearing the most revealing/tight clothes they can legally wear.
You wanna know why these peckerwoods on slashdot are the way they are? Because the majority fall into a few groups... college kids, minors, and crooks. They cannot comprehend that their actions should have consequences, but they think they should be above the law.
Why do we need harsher penalties for 'hackers'? It's because there doesn't seem to be an end to computer crime. Unfortunately, this is not the answer."
What is the answer? Coddling them? Blaming their parents?
"I wouldn't hesitate to say that most computer criminals aren't even aware of the penalties until they get caught."
Ignorance of the consequences is no excuse.
"They are concerned with only one thing: the chances of getting caught."
Because the chances are low.
"The answer should be to take some of the money spent incarcerating people and make security a priority."
I'm all for turning the criminals over to the people they've wronged, chaining them down or to a post, and letting those people give them some real counseling with an assortment of 'tools'.
"Offer some tools and education."
See above.
"All this is going to do is put more troubled kids in jail for longer. I don't know about the rest of you, but if I was tried under current law for everything I did when I was a teen, I'd still be in jail right now."
Ah, now we know.
"Give them a chance to become productive citizens."
HP is just trying to play both sides of the game. Watching HP deal with SCO and everyone else is like watching a double agent in a spy movie about 1960's Berlin.
"Here's an idea everyone- show up at these things impeccably dressed, clean cut, and be a perfect gentleman(or lady); wear only a small linux penguin pin like our lovely "patriots" in the US gov't are so fond of doing these days with the american flag pin. "
Well, most of this would keep RMS from showing up. Oh, wait, that's a good thing.
I urge everyone to use the email link on the HP site. This is what I sent, it's not a great work of literature, but it works.
I recently came across this article at http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/61/33098. html . I was considering buying an HP printer to replace my aging one, but I think another company will get my money, NOT HP. Also, as a technology consultant I cannot recommend HP products of any kind to my clients if HP is going to be involved with a company such as SCO. Association with SCO taints your company in many ways/shapes/forms. I will only deal with companies that behave ethically, and that keep ethical company. HP does not keep ethical company.

Ask yourself this question... How do the cops know which vehicle to pull over on a busy highway, one that has a lot of cash in it? Just dumb luck?
I didn't say 'big technology' take a reading comprehension course.
The companies listed are involved are involved for various reasons. AMD and Intel sell chips. The rest are in it as a hobby. Which is ALL programming under the GPL is good for... a hobby. Those companies are flush with money, and don't NEED to put food on the table in the traditional sense. BUT, they do need a division that generates tax write-offs.
Because it has to be said. It's not a world of lollipops and cotton candy out there sunshine. Peeps are out to make money, and you can't make money doing GPL software. In support, perhaps. Not in just giving software away.
Yup. That's why GPL operating systems and software don't hit it big with technology companies. I won't develop anything for Linux because it's all expected to be GPL.

Don't laugh too hard. Cops in the U.S. can do this with a hand-held scanning device. I've seen it work, and can't tell you how the hell they do it. And, no, I didn't believe it myself untill I saw it.
children are not criminalized. ACTIONS ARE CRIMINALIZED. If little 14 or 16 year old 'Johnny' hacks someone up with an axe, then he/she/it/they should be locked up. People like you are just as much a threat to civilization as the feral children that are being 'raised' in this day and age. In case you haven't noticed, june bug, it's like Lord of the Flies out there. There's no adult oversight, and children are not taught that their actions have ramifications. I, for one, do not take any of that "we did it because of GTA/video games/movies/etc...". They are just vicious little assholes that need to be stomped on when they get so out of line that they murder someone and cause physical injury to others. You want to talk so much about human rights? Ok, then... tell me about the human rights of the person they killed? How about the human rights of the person they injured? And what the fuck is this 'child rights' bullshit? Do children have rights to kill and main? Tell me. This inquiring mind, for one, want's to know what depths of depravity your coming from.
In ALL operating systems there is overhead for the whatever drive format you use. It may be an 80 'gig' drive, but there will always be less available after a format because of OVERHEAD such as something as simple as a TOC, FAT, markers, etc...
These 'kids' are 14 and 16 years old. If they can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality by now, the fact that they killed one person and injured another is beside the point. They should be locked up forever since they will always be a threat to those around them.
There is either right or wrong. There isn't "a little bit right" or "a little bit wrong". You go ahead and allow yourself to be tainted. If you can live with that then you have my pity.
Just shows how biased the crowd here at Slashdot is. It's ok for the world to shit on the Americans, but turn those words around to them and they accuse flamebait. Well, as far as I'm concerned, fuck the world. Fuck everyone who shits on America, and fuck every one of those lousy fuckers that talk shit about America then whine when America doesn't help them out. Fuck those here in America that crap all over it, and are going to school on government grants. I've had enough of em all. Fuck Bono and the countries he want's debt relief for. Fuck countries that 'borrow' money from America and craps all over America every chance they get. If anyone doesn't like what I've said then fuck them too.
Where the right thing, and principles are concerned it IS a zero-sum game, it IS a simple choice. You can either be in bed with a filthy company, or you can get out of that bed. I, for one, will have the satisfaction when I die that I did the right thing. That I didn't taint myself with such people. You, on the other hand, are evidently one to allow yourself to be tained, to allow the stink of associates to sink itself into your life, and their shit to dye your skin. If you had principles, if you had a sense of self-respect, if you had a moral base to stand on then no excuse is enough to justify working for such a company for any length of time.

Now the nuts can put tin foil around their books along with their heads.
OK, sunshine. Enlighten me on your solution to crime.

IT's ok to have a policy against hiring Americans. It's not ok to have a policy against hiring anybody else.
Peeps can talk all they like about Americans, but we lead the world in technology, money, and military strength. Screw em all.
