From a Mac user with a stupid FTP program: "So how can I resolve these carriage return upload problems?"
"Try ASCII upload."
"My program knows Text, MacText, BinHex [etc.], but no ASCII. Which one should I choose?"
"?? Try all of them for what I care."
"Not one worked OK. Now what?"
"Sigh. [dreaming of installing DebianPPC on that thing]"
Are you seriously suggesting that you can't get a decent Macintosh FTP program? That is pretty impressive FUD you are spreading there sir.
Eh? You're obviously not a CS student. Mach didn't do BSD for quite a while after it's creation. It was a completely independent project. It's a kernel anyway, not an OS.
Problem is with some technologies there really is only one route to follow, so by getting there first a company can put a stranglehold on the industry.
It's the same with patenting the genome for rice. How do you patent nature?
Yes I have - and surprise surprise they used a professional 3D card costing upwards of £300, not a 'does OpenGL & Direct 3D quite well if you're only interested in framerate' nVidia gaming card.
But anyway most Mac users are interested in 2D only for which ATI is fine, and most serious 3D modellers are on SGI.
Apparently in new builds of Mac OS X, there is a 'search' field at the top of finder windows, so you can type, for example '.mp3' and it will display only mp3s.
Not exactly what you're talking about but still useful and kinda shell-ish.
Eh? Man... you should try being support for an apple created OS. Seriously, I doubt very, very much whether anyone in the universe will find it easier to deploy even Red Hat than Mac OS X.
I haven't even used the beta which will be far less polished than the final release, but AFAIK it is much easier to install & support than Linux.
But back to the original point, it poses little threat to Linux because you HAVE TO SPEND LOTS OF MONEY to switch to it. I don't think this is too complex an idea to understand...
Vendor suppose for Linux is already starting to happen. Not as fast as I'd like, but signs are that before long Linux will overtake MacOS as the 2nd most popular desktop OS. There is generally always room for at least two players in every market, and a lot of vendors who don't support Linux now will come around once Linux overtakes MacOS. A 'large percentage' may be large enough to be viable at 5 or 6 percent in as large and lucrative a market as this.
If you are seriously suggesting that it's in the general desktop using public's interest to use Linux as opposed to MacOS you are completely blind to the reality of how difficult most people find computers to use (on any platform). But then - you're a Linux advocate, so no surprise there.
I don't think there is a problem with mp3s. I see them as audio shareware. You download the software, try it out for a while, and if you like it, you pay the money. If you don't, you stop listening to it anyway.
However, there will always be people who have little conscience and won't pay the money. It's down to the individual. The problem with Napster is that they are only in this to make money, not to distribute music. If the artists don't want their music distributed in this fashion, then another company shouldn't make money out of doing it.
No, I don't think so. Offspring might not be anti-mp3, but they are taking all the money for the Napster merchandise. I think they are just trying to be funny. It isn't really supposed to be a show of support, they are satirising the whole Napster ethic of getting rich by distributing someone elses copyright.
This isn't really true. DivX quality is far better than VHS. The compression is only noticeable when there is a lot of movement on screen, and colour banding in backgrounds. The definition of the edges & the contrast are much better than VHS.
Why are slashdot posting 'DivX is the new mp3' stories masquerading as mpeg4 news? For those who don't know, DivX is simply a hacked version of Microsoft's preliminary version of the mpeg4 video codec, which removes some restrictions inherent in MS's implementation. It enables compression of a DVD movie onto a CD using DeCSS and mp3 for audio. The quality is good, not as good as DVD but better than VHS and pretty watchable.
A lot of websites seem to be infering that people will distribute these films over the internet ala mp3. This seems unlikely, as not many people have the time or bandwidth do download CD images. What is more likely is that people will rent DVD's from Blockbusters & rip the film to DivX.
What! You mean a site named www.xbox reckons that the X-box is gonna be better than PS2? Get outta here!
As for your assertions about the use of Direct X, well the whole problem with creating abstraction layers between the hardware & software is it slows things down, and reduces the possibility of optimising for reliably predictable hardware.
The X-box is simply a PC which has a gaming focused harware setup. It is not a dedicated 3D/gaming machine like the PS2. It will flop in Japan, and because of this it will flop in the States.
Just because the 14 year olds posting on this threads are PC gamers, they should avoid thinking that a MS branded console is going to clear up.
I feel a lot of you linux guys who have relatively little experience with MacOS are missing the point here. The person who originally posted the critique of the Linux GUI experience was obviously someone with reasonable experience of both Linux & Mac OS (as am I). To someone who has this experience, it is blindingly obvious that the Linux GUI is significantly inferior to the current Mac OS interface. This does not make me a Macintosh zealot. Note I have both the Mac OS and Linux installed on my machine. I recognise Linux for its strengths, it has far, far more stability than the current Mac OS. But this does not equate to being a system that a graphic designer - who is not a computer scientist - can be productive on.
And please don't try and tell me that your average joe is going to have no trouble learning to use the Unix CLI. I mean, that is seriously laughable. You need to understand that people who post on slashdot!=general public. There is a big difference. You're not even trying to understand the mentality of the non-technical majority of the population.
Just a thought - wouldn't it be possible to port the Sorenson codec to x86 linux using Windows Quicktime? As stated it is relatively straightforward to write QT players for any platform, and I'm sure xanim could be updated to support QT streaming. In this case the only boundary to Linux QT would be porting the codecs. If someone could find out how the Windows QT player interfaces with the Sorenson codec.dll then could they not reverse engineer it? Of course I may be talking rubbish.

Its so ironic that people always spell words like 'accurate' wrong on forums.
:)
Damn nice sig!

Is it true that Amazon don't make money? I know they don't make a profit but that's just because they reinvest all the money they make.
>CorelDraw! is a masterwork of Graphics editing. There is not a better product in the same catagory.
Eh? Where'd you get that from? Have you ever used Illustrator or Freehand?

For such a dumbass band, it's quite funny.
It think you're looking at the best part of a day...

Ok, end of rant - but can we tone down the FUD?P>
