I've honestly been predicting that a future version of AOL will do just this. AOL already overwrites several system.dll's when it installs, it wouldn't be unconceivable for them to replace explorer.exe in the future. Most aol users already think that aol is their operating system anyway, and with all the mozilla projects to add X feature that really should be a separate program into mozilla its entirely possible that in the future aol will try and slide something like this in.
Thats the old nature vs nurture debate.. no one with much common sense puts all their eggs in either basket, as the obvious truth is that both nature and nurture play strong parts in ones development and socialization
If they really wanted to force their naming scheme on people, they should have added a line in the gpl to state that any operating system built using gnu tools should be prefixed by gnu/... The only operating system that I know that is rightly prefixed with gnu/ is hurd because the kernel is actually worked on by the gnu people.. I have all the gnu tools installed on my windows box.. do you think i should start calling my os gnu/microsoft/windows2000?
This system is basically a version of the GNU system, modified to use the kernel Linux. We started developing the system in 1984, years before Linus Torvalds got involved, and we also wrote the largest part of the code. In fairness, we ought to get equal mention.
Yeh, except without Linus Torvalds, there wouldn't be a kernel and then the gnu project would just be a lot of gpl clones of things you already can get for free from the various bsd projects.
Ian Crooks, operations engineer at Pennsylvania-American Water Co., declares: "I for one would switch tomorrow if they would release a [Pentium] machine."
This guy doesn't understand the term "switch." If he starts off running an Intel PC, and buys an "Intel mac" what has he really changed?
You obviously don't understand the term "switch" if you think that switching from windows to mac os isn't a big change.
The OS that is running on the hardware has more than a little bit to do with comparitive speed as well.. This is blatantly obvious when using rendering programs such as rhino3d.. My home computer running win2k can render things exponentally faster than the lab computers here which are 3x times as fast but run 98.
They use rev r disk here to manage the macs.. not sure if its good persay, but it seems to get the job done.. then again not that many people use the macs.. and the ones that do bitch about them taking 15 minutes to load up because the previous users killed it before rev r disk could finish.
Mozilla has just released their own lightweight browser, Phoenix.
Since when has phoenix been a mozilla project? Just because its hosted off their domain doesn't mean its an official project of the mozilla team.. besides phoenix has had binaries out for quite a while.
He probably just wants to have Debian to "have Debian".
Well from that standpoint, most of the people who want linux servers in general just want linux to have linux.. for just displaying html and running basic scripts, windows would work just as well.. if you are gonna pay for something, might as well find what you want..
It's not the distro that's failing, it's either the sysadmin or the network. (or perhaps the hardware)
Yes, but he's obviously in the market for a new host since his other one sucks, so he's trying to find one that is configured more to his liking.. I don't see anything that suggests that he thinks redhat is the reason it is down.. but the fact that it is down is the reason he is looking for a new one..
All this annoying NYTimes user name nonsense would go away if slashdot would enter into such an agreement with NYTimes. Now THAT would be something worth donating for.
Why should/. pay for a partnership, when they can just append &partner=SOMEOTHERPARTNER to the end of the links and achieve the same effect for free?
You most likely have other spyware stuff from other programs.. don't forget that audio galaxy and many other p2p services install spyware as well as several webpages exploit active x scripting to switch you over to useing their popup generating proxies.
The whole conversation makes a lot more sense if you drop the hat references.. sure its easy to lump people into categorys of white, black, gray, etc hat. But in reality there are crooks, good guys and crooks who play good guys. It used to just be a hax0r description to use the hat verbage.. its unfortunate that its passed into mainstream security usage.. I personally have a hard time taking anyone seriously that describes themselves by the figurative color of their hat..
but I should be able to watch my DVDs wherever I want on whatever I want, Listen to my music wherever I want, in the car, on the way to work, in the bathroom.
You can do that without kazaa, and infact downloading stuff off of kazaa is not fair use at all.. its one thing to steal music, its another to try and justify it as legal. If you really want fair use, you are entitled to it, but you have to make the copies yourself instead of downloading them.
Now all we need is for google to start adding some flawed by interesting editor commentary to each article they link to and provide the ability for users to comment on such articles with a flawed self moderation system to somehow allow us to only read the halfway intelligent comments.
I've had limited success with removing and readding tcpip.. haven't tried hacking the registry too much other than to make kazaa not load on startup and to unregister ad proxys.
If the director's case is uphelpd, then wouldn't it also be a breach of copyright to sell any book that didn't contain each and every letter it originally contained?
No, but it would (conceivably) be illegal to purchase a bunch of copies of books, edit out half the material of each one and then rent them out to people.
although if you turn on active desktop and change some settings you can make windows more kde like and have it be single click to launch programs.
hahah.. someone should seriously update that song for modern times..
kill mozilla like they did to java
Kill mozilla like they killed netscape the first time.

Quite possibly the only Bruce Perens post to not make it to +5.

Way to admit the truth, now if we could only get the apple.slashdot.org folks to do the same, the world would be a better place :)
So calling them "Genius Grants" is apparently not quite right.
Its not pc anymore.. I believe they were originally called that and then later with it became unpc to say such things, they changed it.
Unfortunately, there isn't one for an editor that does editing..

- Win 95 original
- Win 95 B
- Win 95 OSR2
- Win 95 OSR2.1
- Win 98
- Win 98 SE
Luckily all of those will fit on the same cd saving some lugging around..
