They are working on ironing out the kinks in the license right now with various "biggies" in the open source world. This is the first open source thing they have ever done, lets just help them and be nice. People on the forums @ projectmayo are really being cool and trying to help make ProjectMayo do the right things. They are into it.
If you want to encode 1000 movies, and call them DivX and then sell them, you can't. They own the copyright to the word DivX it looks like. Look at the terms "Open Source" and "FSF" those are copyrighted words.
You can't call something "Linux" unless Linus allows it (technically).
They are protecting their codec. If you make something new, encode, don't call it divx, I think you are ok.
Come on -- ask questions, dig deeper -- don't throw flames!
they don't have infrared or any pci slots. (nor AGP) -- they actually suck for anything video related. I have two. One is a great MP3 server, the other was a waste of a video experiment similar to yours. I have a new box I picked up at frys that I think will do the trick though. -Davidu
Follow the tipster protocol -- you can tip him at www.fairtunes.com -- once enough money is gathered ($50 bucks I think), they contact him and send the check. Courtney Love, and many others use the system already.
Also, even though FairTunes is for musicians, it works just fine for any "person" or "group" as long as they have an address or an email address where the guy who runs it can contact them.(linus@transmeta will work fine)
1.3ivx is not Open Source yet, but they hope to make the decoder OSS eventually.
How do you know this? Do you have some sort of information that we don't?
2.DivX;-) is probably illegal. Project Mayo is still vaporware.
The legality of DivX;-) is unknown, we are lucky I suppose that microsoft hasn't done anything, but seing as how the cat is out of the bag, would it matter? Also, to be vaporware, doesn't a company have to promise a release date and break it. When does projectmayo plan on releasing? When have they said they are? There web site is a bit thin but I wouldn't call them vaporware quite so soon.
In any case, I think it is down to 3ivx and projectmayo. Let the best codec win.
1. What we want is a REAL open source codec. We don't want an open source player, API, or "framework" -- we want a true MPEG-4 open source codec.
2. The 3ivx website has released a closed source codec that integrates into quicktime but from what they have released so far, it doesn't compete with Windows Media Format or Sorenson AT ALL. I sure hope that they will release something of decent quality soon.
3. Of all the groups working on a nice MPEG-4 codec, we have seen many die, fizzle, or simply lie. OpenCodex.com is pretty much off the face of the planet and now their website is just some virtual hosting site. 3ivx has said they have a supperior product, and that it will be open source, so far both have been false. That leaves it to ProjectMayo -- the group started by the creator of DivX. They haven't released anything yet but they sure seem to be the most professional. Perhaps we can appeal to them to become open source.
No matter what happens, the community is ready for a REAL MPEG-4 codec that does not just have some open player, it needs to be fully open so that it can be ported to all OS's, optimized, and hacked to be even better than a small group of developers could imagine.
some students run local napster servers. It saves an awesome amount of bandwidth, plus transfers go about 1000k/s [not 100, 1000] (nearly instantaneous for mp3s.)
That was a mean trick Malda. Why did you have to remind us of the good old days. No Trolls, no hot grits, no Natalie Portman -- when/. accomplished something. When it DID something. Now it is just a recycler of news -- which I like, but it used to be amazing. You know what I mean.
The "Divx Deux" codec is a new M$ free codec. It is in the works and in testing now. Keep checking the site for more updates. If you are a MPEG4 codec buff, get involved!
From the site:
What is DivX;-) Deux? It is the next generation of DivX;-), that is what. We are working hard to make DivX;-) Deux maintain the high standards DivX;-) has set while optimizing the codec so that the things you use it for the most are greatly improved.
Madison Project has been long over for some time. It ran in San Diego and some other areas. It wasn't a secret -- nor was it a success. It happened over a year ago.
Wow this is old.
I wanna know when we will see a madison project dedicated to DivX or some other MPEG-4 based codec.

"ZDNet is reporting that they've licensed technology from SpeechWorks that will allows users to update/retrieve information on their Palm PDAs via telephone when they don't have them with them. Eventually the entire Palm would be voice activated. "
Can we have a little grammer check? ZDnet just reported the story. They have nothing to do with it.

Lehigh also has one. (no URL)

I think opencodex.com has a contest offering 50,000 for the first person/group to make an open source DivX codec.
