DIN is a physical format standard. This does nothing for the octopus connector, which is not a standard.
And unlike DIN, current in dash SYNC style displays do not have a standard. And now that Sync is no longer going to be supported, in 5 years, all those nifty consoles may just be worthless. They are barely cute toys today, and compared to the Android / iDevice options that are currently out there they suck.
And then they will eventually go bankrupt anyways because instead of making good cars, with options people actually want, the spend stupid amounts of money on installing services (like OnStar) into every vehicle "standard", which most people don't want to pay $17.95 - 70.00 month. Hey, guess what, OnStar is now mostly useless for all but emergency cases (automatic activation upon accident) because we have these things called smartphones.
And for all the profitability of OnStar, it didn't help GM from being bailed out by the USA government.
These damned things are part of long-term, multi-billion dollar business strategies.
Yup, and yet they still failed. Good Job guys! How about going back to building cars and not trying to monetize the after purchase experience to death.
The cost of the Cloud is cheap. And for IT, we just say "not as secure, but if you're okay with that, go ahead" and when the Cloud services fail, or get breached or whatever, the CIO can simply say "not my fault, that was your choice". The real cost is hidden.
"I didn't sell anything on Silk Road 2. I built a website others used to sell those things. Would you arrest the CEO of Ebay if one of its customers sold something that was illegal?"
Perhaps not yet. But since you can print anything, the value isn't what you can pick up at Walmart, but rather printing the thing you can't pick up there. Printing the 3D plastic clip you just broke on some older thing you own, and having it that day, instead of throwing the old broken thing away is worth something, even to you. I can't tell you how many plastic clips I've broken and tossed the old broken thing away, that I now can fix and have it remain useful.
Not to mention, the creative types who are prototyping new and interesting inventions that weren't cost effective if sent to milling houses.
The correct formula is a cost / opportunity cost model. Of course, you'll never know what opportunity costs are, because you miss them. IF you can get to a point where you can MEASURE a break even point, there is usually unforeseen opportunities you'll also capture that will get you beyond break even.
Back in the day, when I sold $3000 computers, I used this model all the time. Could you justify, breaking even, on a $3000 computer (25 years ago), verses not having a computer at all. Most people understood that if you could reasonably figure out break even value, the opportunities to gain on competitors was huge unknown, but also something that should be fit into the equation.
At some point, the price drops, and the opportunities disappear because they are captured by more people in the market. Early adopters often reap huge rewards if they can find the right niche. And when new markets are emerging, niche is very profitable.
The untold part of this story is the reason he was being arrested, and evidence of a Police State, was because he was selling "untaxed cigarettes" aka Loosies. The state, using the force of government will collect its taxes from the serfs.
ALL taxes are regressive, and generally oppressive. While we accept that taxes are a necessary evil, we have forgotten that they are, and will remain, evil. The true goal of a free people is to reduce taxes. Period.
However, too many people only care about controlling others, and using taxes is an easy way to exercise our evil tendencies towards tyranny.
Filming police is entirely legal in almost (perhaps all) jurisdictions. It is illegal to use color of authority to prevent the first amendment rights of the people. The policy already exists. The cops committed a crime. As law enforcement officers, they should know better, and if they don't, they shouldn't be cops.
We are talking about arresting someone making a video, and destroying the evidence. Both things have clearly been adjudicated up to the SCOTUS, to the point where it is almost common knowledge that you can record (and should) the police doing their job.
These police don't like the light of day, and this can only mean on thing, they are cockroaches, that run and hide when the lights come on.
In short, this is not a ONE TIME event, but a larger pattern. We must break the pattern, and firing the cops who don't know the law is the only answer.
It is worse than that. It is almost common knowledge that courts everywhere have ruled that recording police is just about legal in just about circumstances. The police should know this by now, plenty of other people know it.
You wouldn't have to transfer the whole DL info, as that is the point, just the DL number itself. Everything else the Police needs at that point is in a database elsewhere. This would simply expedite the process so the cop can issue the summons quicker.
Freedom and liberty are the "best interest" of the people, the will of the people is to have task masters enslaving them, which is why we have what we have. So, no, they aren't the same.
If I'm already a customer, they don't need to pound me with more advertisements. It only pisses me off.
A good advertising campaign is one that doesn't feel like advertising. The iconic Macintosh Super Bowl ad is a really good example of an ad. It simple was "there is something coming, you're gonna like it".
"They also make huge amounts of money on the upgrades and the bells and whistles."
I would love to see actual evidence of this, beyond marketing's interpretation of the data. I sold cars, and for the most part, people who wanted to upgrade the audio system didn't do it at the dealership. Further, most people took whatever the audio system was that was in the car that they wanted, even it it wasn't what they really would have chosen.
IMHO, making it difficult to upgrade audio with the whole "integrated dash systems" is NOT a selling point, but is often quite the opposite.
I equate this to the shopping centers that have convoluted parking lots that are nearly impossible to get into or out of because some design team once thought "hey, if we make it convoluted, people will stay longer and shop more!". I know plenty of people who simply avoid such places for that reason alone.
Or, as my dad used to claim, "It looked good on paper!"
Or, better yet, Auto Industry, come up with a "standard" that we can "upgrade" our systems quickly and easily. Nothing worse than driving a ten year old car with outdated technology, because Auto companies want some sort of lock in for their "customers". (quotes added because I know the auto industry is incapable of getting their heads out of their asses long enough care about their customers).
1) Your customers are the first people that buy a car, not everyone that ever owns that car afterwards. Most cars have multiple owners and pissing on them with proprietary components for the sake of proprietary lock in is stupid. First company that comes up with and uses a Standard will have a cult following.
2) You are saying, via lock in, that you really don't care what your ten year old branded car's technology is. Nothing like saying "You have a tape player, that is what you have, that is what you get, you can't upgrade" to everyone that owns you branded vehicle simply because you all couldn't figure out how to build a deck slot for car radios.
3) I have a number of very easy ideas on how to provide upgradable technology slots that would simply make your branded vehicles much more enticing 5 years down the road. You do expect your cars to last that long and represent your brand that long... right?
Ads that follow me and my every mood are a tad bit in the "uncanny valley" area for me. It bothers me that when I open up Facebook, there is always an ad for Hint water. Not because I don't like Hint (I do like it), but rather because I am already being bombarded with adverts for it elsewhere (email). The problem, I don't want more ads for things I'm already buying, and it only makes me want to buy it less.
I am less bothered by Coke ads that are everywhere targeting everyone. Somehow seeing ads on Facebook, for the thing I just googled, really annoys the crap out of me. That doesn't help them sell it to me.
Well, wrong. They don't follow the prescribed laws because doing so doesn't serve their goals. The not following the prescribed laws are a result of serving their own interests over the people. One can follow prescribed set of laws and still not serve the people (and thus be tyranny).
AND I didn't say "will of the people" I said self (government's own) interest over the people.
Lastly, we are in a place of illusion of a representative republic. Illusion, because the reality is, the Bureaucracy rules the people, not those we have elected to do so. This is part of the reason nothing changes when we vote out incumbents, except minor issues around the periphery.
Of course you're right about the "will of the people" being fungible, which is why I steer clear of any politician that claims "Evil _______(party) wants to do _____ (evil act)". I feel that voting is too fucking emotional for most people, which is why we're in mess we're in.
Actually, the SCOTUS isn't the final arbiter, the people are. The DoI clearly sets forth a framework where tyrannical government can be overthrown.
I define Tyranny as any government serving its own interest (the interest of the Government itself) over that of the people. Yes, we have an elected tyranny, not because of the elected officials (which we change) , but because the bureaucracy that powers the real "government" isn't elected.
Because that sounds like someone with short sighted views on technology. I suspect that a DMV ID app would require activation before giving up the information requested by Police's NFC chips.
Hacking / Abuse is always gonna happen. From the time we first "hacked" a wheel together, and it was used for nefarious purposes (stealing women / children)...
AND I always assume the police want me to give up my rights, and violate them even when I am not willing, which is why I will always answer "I don't answer questions" to any police inquiry. Makes for interesting conversations at road stops. "Do you know how fast you were going?"... "I don't answer questions". In short, NEVER EVER EVER admit anything.
It depends. We hope they are more secure, but we have no idea if they actually are. Lack of data breaches doesn't indicate future performance.

I can imagine the defense.

"the voters are just morons"?
Gruber, is that you?
Yes, the politicians think this, and we keep re-electing them or worse, replacing them with more of the same. For the real problem, see my signature.

With great power comes great responsibility.
Or something like that.

Have you seen the other brands versions of the same thing? Functionally the same
