  1. I tend to like other animals more than most people. People are mean assholes (including me). But kitties are cute, even when they are being dicks.

  2. Do you run Linux or Windows on that computer? Do you buy using Amazon? Those are free will choices that made those guys rich.

  3. Re:What fraction of those are in the USA? on Almost 100 Million People a Year 'Forced To Choose Between Food and Healthcare' (theguardian.com) · · Score: 2, Insightful

The poorest Americans are richer than the average of the rest of the world. They have access to actual healthcare where in other places, they don't even have access, as there are no doctors. We live in a world of riches, and think we're poor, because the myopia we suffer. The solution being offered, "single payer" isn't really a solution, and will end up putting us on the road to Venezuela and Greece.

The real fix is to get rid of insurance all together, and rid ourselves of the middlemen extracting 50% of all costs for themselves. It will actually lower costs (backoffice) that doctors have to run chasing down insurance repayments and keeping track of all the required paperwork it involves.

There is no reason why 8 hour (that should have been 2) visit to the Emergancy Room cost $10,000(no costly tests), except insurance. You see, those that can pay, end up paying for those that can't (or won't), with the Insurance Middlemen getting their cut.

And THAT is why healthcare costs so much.

then what's this "Slashdot effect" that I used to hear about?

In the days of old, when internet was still free, there used to be a problem of content delivery. The slashdot effect was caused by unprepared websites were featured on slashdot, and their entire bandwidth was eaten by the resulting visitors. This problem has largely been solved by most websites. See Cloudflare for example.

  5. I can fix the whole Net Neutrality issue in a very simple, easy to understand way. The problem of Net Neutrality, is the problem caused by lack of choice due to Franchise agreements for the last mile. Fix the last mile choice problem, and all the anti-Net Neutrality boogiemen go away.

The fix is to give choice to the consumer (last mile) via building out infrastructure in such a way that any vendor can deliver their products and services to any user at the end of the last mile.

But instead of solving the problem caused by government regulations (franchise agreements) properly, we're wanting to go the route of adding more problems on top of the existing ones because it is more convenient.

  6. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I only vote for people who want to decentralize or remove power from government. The problem is, that is self defeating, and very few people like voting for losers, even if they are better off doing so.

  7. Laptop batteries last at most 2 years before needing replacement. And new batteries are about 25% of the cost of a new laptop (on the low end). On the otherhand, upgrading to SSD and replacing the battery on an older laptop makes it feel like a brand new one.

hey all involve hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths. If you think that's acceptable, we should probably reconsider who the murderous psychopath is in this situation.

If a brief war, killing a 100,000 civilians saves LA or SF or Seattle from becoming Chernobyl you'd call me a psychopath? Really

That is one of the potential options being bandied about. And it isn't like we want to kill 100,000 people in NK, it is that we'd rather not have a city that used to have millions as a pile of nuclear rubble. The difference totalitarian dictators and free people is that brutal dictators don't care about anyone but themselves. And both you and I care about more than ourselves (even if we disagree on approach). THAT is what is the difference maker here.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands in NK have already died under the Kims rule. And more are likely, regardless of the war. I don't see you trying to save them.

  14. You might want to look at the latest unemployment numbers. They are approaching historic lows.

  15. Point is, telling somebody what they should have done is a waste of time.

That is not correct. Telling people what they should have done, is a way to correct future behavior. Unless learning from mistakes is frowned upon.

Further, I think I made the case elsewhere, we should be teaching kids this stuff from an early age.

It's too late to tell Charlie Sheen that sleeping with hookers will get him AIDS, but it isn't too late for people who have never slept with a hooker. And yes, you can sleep with hookers and never get AIDS, and you can also never sleep with hookers and get AIDS anyways. However, you cannot get AIDS from not sleeping with hookers.Risky behavior is risky, who knew?

So the girl that had to drop out of high school because she got knocked up and married her baby-daddy we abandon.

She didn't have to drop out of high school. They have programs for girls like her. Stop making excuses for failure. Yeah, I'm sure life is hard for her. THAT is kind of the point. It didn't have to be that way, and we should be teaching kids this.

  22. Being the Top of the line "Premium" phones are around the $1000 range, they are actually rather popular.

Actually the best deal is about 1/2 that for a PREMIUM Smart phone. It might not do EVERYTHING the $1000 phone does, or have the same status symbol attached, but if you really really wanted a premium phone for 1/2 price, they are out there.

Think of it this way, you can buy a new phone twice as often.

If you do three things, just three things in life, you will not be poor. Those three things, should be taught to every kid from Kindergarten to High School.

What if it was really that simple?

  24. Someone's poor? Give them money.

Giving people money doesn't solve the reason they are poor. It really doesn't. While there are a few people out there that are truly incapable of taking care of themselves, most of the "poor" are that way because they are really bad at making decisions. They look at the immediate pleasure at the risk of long term stability. That simple string of choices over the long haul produces really bad outcomes.

Drinking now, and not being able to go to work in the morning. Buying a tattoo instead of going to night school at the JC. Drinking a Latte every morning instead of paying off credit card debt. YOU can't fix bad decision making with UBI. In fact, UBI ignores the reason people are failing in life. It is the exact problem I described here. Short term gain (Monthly stipend) while ignoring long term goals / stability (solving the bad choice spiral of poverty).

Nothing of real value is easy. If it is easy, the value isn't there.

Find something that is hard using a resource that is rare, and that will provide you with the ability to make a good living. A Picasso painting is worth millions because it is rare, famous and highly desired. There are only a few. THAT is why it is worth a lot of money. Sweeping a sidewalk is hard work, but almost anyone can do it, from a complete moron to the smartest guy in the world. That is why it doesn't pay very well.

Pick up a skill(resource), that is rare and provides a service or product that is highly desired, and you'll be fine. Not everyone can do that, which is why there is Starbucks and McDonald's.
