Stupid People are everything you said criminal scum are. They are a menace to society, they are destructive, and turn places in to shitholes. So, in my world they deserve each other.;) Which is why they should be left to themselves, and leave the rest of us alone!
Why is, taking advantage of stupid people against the law. NOBODY is forcing stupid people to make stupid decisions, they are willing participants. People who invest in Pyramid Schemes are victims of themselves, and not the "con". Most Cons are based on the assumption that the Mark is stupid and greedy, and therefore "easy". I can promise nothing, while making wild and vague "potential earnings of up to 400%*" type of claims. And if you believe me, you should invest immediately ($10,000 Minimum).
Tell me, what "crime" have I made in making such a claim and asking for "investment"? I've promised nothing, guaranteed nothing. Except I have a flashy Powerpoint presentation of the whole process (again, not promising anything, making only vague claims) that you seem to enjoy! Oh, and I have Pen (tm)**!

You cannot protect people from stupid. It just annoys the rest of us.
The six scariest words strung together are "There ought to be a law".
You cannot fix stupid. Some people are so stupid, they actually go looking for stuff like this because of laws that are supposed to prevent people getting ripped off. The problem is, they still are stupid, they still get ripped off, but now, they want the Government to fix their stupidity so they can do it all again next week.
The fact that IE crashed says a great deal. It wasn't ready when they demo'd the thing, and each passing day, Google (via Samsung) and Apple are pulling ahead. It is like WP7 vs Android and iPhones, it is clear that these are "me too" devices trying to stay relevant.
Microsoft has painted themselves into the "Windows" corner they are in. Windows 8 is nothing more than "me too" for tablets.
I'll tell you who the winner will be as soon as I see the following. Consumer Tablet that can be managed by a Corporate MDM* that is polished and supported end to end. If Google made a MDM for Android, it would be game over for Apple and Microsoft.
Give me a MDM where I can push all the documentation, allow for Forms Signing, integration into Enterprise Systems, enabling signed applications that are Pushed onto devices etc etc etc. I wish I could be Project Manager for something like that, I'd have beta out in a year, and full 1.0 version in 18 Months with Feature adds every quarter.
*MDM = Mobile Device Manager. Allows Enterprise control over devices, namely tablets and phones.
Public Transportation sucks in most places. When it takes 2 hours to go six miles (yeah) by bus in my city, it is just as fast to walk. It is, quite literally, stupid to ride a bus for most locations in this city. UNLESS it happens to be on the same route. I could design a better system with that helps more riders than is currently in place. Buses parked at the "transit center" hub are not efficient. All routes tie to the hub (WTF?) so that you have to ride an entire route to transfer to a new bus. That is why it takes 2 hours to go six miles. Yes, the buses goes right by my house, and right by the destination.
I'm sorry, but I'm 6'5" and don't fit in a two door electric hybrid. Not even if I pull out the seats and sit in the back. One Size Fits All is a lie, and government mandates to the same are just more NANNY STATE wannabe Dictators.
You want to effect change, get people to vote on raising gas taxes so that Gas is $10 a pint, and that will drastically cut consumption and drive people to the Chevy Volt (now defunct) like all the lame skinny vegetarian liberals want (for everyone but themselves).
BTW, I drive a Mercury Marquis (Crown Vic style) and use less than 20 Gal a month driving it normally to and from work. I don't want or need a miniature car that is impossible to get into or out of.
The US fails, because it has a HUGE middle man bureaucracy that skims 20% off the top called Insurance. IF I got my "benefits" as salary, I could be much more efficient in my health care dollars than Insurance.
Case in point, I can get my meds via Insurance for $25 (co-pay) or I can go to Walmart and get them for $12 (which I do). I have insurance, but it is more expensive to use than paying cash. That is not efficient.
My daughter just spent 4 hours in Emergency, the Insurance paid (after discounts) 16,000. Four grand per hour?
I read "My Side of the Mountain" when I was a kid. Better story (IMHO), and had all the features you just mentioned (and then some). Where the Red Fern Grows, all I remember is the dog died.
As for learning about how Rural people live, I read "Foxfire" series. Much better resource for "rural" ancient ways living.
You mean, the US, with its state of the art, best of breed health care is worse than covering everyone with crappy care that doesn't offer nearly the same care as available in the US?
100% coverage that is crappy isn't an improvement.
I read quite a bit. I just don't read fiction. I read News, Tech Journals, Manuals, Interesting blogs and so on. I was turned off of reading fiction in grade school where we were told to read this book or that book that had no interest for me. It was easier to get a better grade reading the cliff notes and writing from there. Reading the book itself meant I got a C or D. Cliff Note Report gave me a guarantee of at least a C and no effort actually reading it.
You tell me, what did reading "Where the Red Fern Grows" do for me besides the D on the paper?
You mean like the Black Pather's standing outside voting places and declaring that they are going to get violent at the RNC convention? You mean that kind of "voter intimidation" ?
You mean like not wanting out men and women in the armed services to have extended voting periods when they are deployed overseas as voting suppression?
Or that Blacks vote almost 80-90% for Democrats even though it has been historical fact that the (D) are the people who opposed Civil Rights and were members of the KKK? Black people keep voting for the same people expecting different results, I pity the (D) party when they finally realize that it is the (D) party keeping them enslaved on the plantation.
When Engineers can't spell, they are still able to communicate. When a Teacher cannot do simple math in their head, and ARGUES over the answer, then we have problems. We've seen too many examples of the latter, and it impacts the results.
The rich, famous and powerful will always have advantages, regardless of political persuasion. However we, as a society, should really frown upon the very thing you are speaking to. However, the results are often different.
When the Justice Dept won't even look at Black Panther Intimidation at polling places, that is a different result than if the KKK (equally bad IMHO) was there, THAT is what I'm talking about. And if you think that was a one time event, you should listen to what they have planned for during the RNC (I'm not a R) convention.
Different rules for different classes are bad, period.
I can tell you where the idea comes from. It comes from the idiotic idea that doing a research paper on a topic that has already been researched a million times before is useful in any way shape or form. It comes from the notion that you can teach PROPER research procedures on dummy(fake/psuedo) research projects.
IF you want to fix the problem, fix the process. Make it REAL research, on things that matter to the kids. Yeah that means more work for teachers, but teachers are supposed to be teaching, and not teaching by rote.
I remember reading books, and doing book reports only to get C's and D's until I discovered CLIFF NOTES. I then did a papers based on those and got B's and C's, and it was much easier. Guess what, I never read the books again. Was the goal of those papers to teach writing or make sure you read the books, or something else? Because it didn't teach me anything of the sort, it taught me that if someone else has done the work, you use that. It also taught me to not do papers on things that didn't interest me at all. Perhaps that was the lesson I was supposed to learn;)
Actually, many Liberal Arts Degrees are just as idiotic as you make "Intelligent Design" (not a real degree btw) is. I know plenty of people with four year degrees that don't know anything useful, and are basically waiting for a government or teaching job because... well that is all they are qualified to do. I have an issue with people who get a four year degree but can't do simple math without a calculator.
I was in a meeting where a liberal arts person thought that 10% of 1500 was 15, and proceeded to argue until I made them open calc on their computer. Four years of college to act all smug and superior, only to get mad at me for humiliating them in a meeting in front of everyone else. Yeah, that really happened.
No, we're not talking about "ends justifying the means". We are talking about the society that has a whole bunch of different rules for different classes of people, which IS a liberal point of view. We are talking about equal results, not equal opportunity, which is a liberal point of view. We are talking about "you didn't do that" mentality from the President, who thinks that people working their asses off to get ahead in the world should be punished for working harder than others. We're talking about the OWSers who are going after the "1%" in a despicable show of envy and jealousy.
Don't get me wrong, the right side has its issues as well, but THIS is a liberal point of view. You are correct, the point of education is to learn, and people who don't value that shouldn't be rewarded. However, the punishment comes when they get their asses fired for being stupid and not knowing what they ought to know. The punishment to employers are for those that accept that a piece of parchment means anything.
It means that in the future, you're going to have to work harder to find qualified people, and qualified people are going to have to work harder at being noticed. But the rewards for that hard work will far exceed those that accept that a piece of parchment and a certification means anything useful.
When I interview people I always ask a question or two about future educational goals, but never directly. I want to know that people want to continue to learn. Corporations that don't help educate their people who want to improve themselves will always suffer compared to those that do.
Funny, it seems to go both ways, with the Chik-fil-a thing and Chicago/Boston think they can keep an employer out of city simply for expressing his views about.gay marriage. However, I agree with you on principle, if people would quit forcing their views on others, that would be great.
For the record, I'm offended that you're offended that I'm offended that you're offended.
"I feel that having SO MUCH information at my fingers would just reduce the amount of actual life I'm living."
That is your problem, not the phone's. What you're saying is that you would like all that a smartphone offers, but you can't control your own implulses in such a way that it won't impact you when you want to have a life.
Instead, you bum off other people's smartphones.
Things I use on my Smartphone that I turn off when I get home: GPS, Network Tools, Browser, G+/FB notifications, XKCD Viewer (yes!), NoteEverything, Gmail, Gtalk, Gvoice, Calendar, Maps, Phonebook, SoundHound, and finally, Speedometer (car's not accurate).
Guess what, those things are valuable and yet I am able to turn it all off when I get home. I plug my phone in, and walk away. It takes discipline, but not much effort.
That's nothing. I have a beard, and my dog can log into my computer!
Don't Blink. Don't even blink!
Stupid People are everything you said criminal scum are. They are a menace to society, they are destructive, and turn places in to shitholes. So, in my world they deserve each other. ;) Which is why they should be left to themselves, and leave the rest of us alone!
Yeah! Because you must be advocating the opposite, of More and More laws to the point of Tyranny! Yeah, arguing the extremes is easy!
Because Rape and Murder is exactly the same as protecting stupid people from their own choices. Exactly, right?
Why is, taking advantage of stupid people against the law. NOBODY is forcing stupid people to make stupid decisions, they are willing participants. No Thank You
Do you work at Apple in their iPhone Development Division?
But if you lose your phone ... you've got other security problems. Don't keep anything valuable on your phone.
Yes!
Sincerely,
Michael
