Is esd running on the box you tried it on this morning? I think there are still issues with esd (installed by default with redhat 6.0). If it's NOT running and it still bombs, I have no idea;)
I read that as well yesterday. It looks like his posts got lost in the sea of thread traffic. It can happen. Did he actually send email to any of the editors about this?
I happen to like reading dvorak's articles. I watch silicon spin. Having said that.
Dvorak did this, for what they call in the wrestling world, cheap heat. It's just like when a heel comes out to the ring and says "(insert town of current showing) SUCKS!". Cheap heat. Remember his big bruhaha about the iBook? He called it something along the lines of the barbie laptop. While I agree with that, it was all for attention. He writes articles like this all the time. Now Jesse Berst, he's just a moron.
People can't handle driving and using the cell phone at the same time. How in the HELL do we expect them to handle games in addition. And don't tell me that it won't happen. Some looser is going to be on his cell phone in the car playing a game in traffic and hit me. At that point road rage will take over and I will promptly beat him with said cellphone.
Now that the site is back up, I thought I would poke around the website and see some info on the hardware and what not..I came across this on each OS.
about Redhat:
We used the latest distribution from Redhat, along with Apache. Much thanks to the open source community for help in securing the server.
okay..sounds cool. I'm curious as to WHO helped out.
about Microsoft:
Microsoft pitched in by modifying their guestbook application to a classified ad application. They also helped with the myriad configurations of Nt, IIS,SQLServer, and MTS.
Look who decided to get thier hands into things. Not only did they "help" by rewriting the guestbook app, but they also did mods to NT,IIS,SQL server and Transaction Server.
-- Like many have said earlier, It's not going to look good for linux. I could be wrong, but I was only wrong once and that was becasue I *THOUGHT* i was wrong;)
I mentioned before the use of the firewall throws out all the real world usage issues for me. This is a test of raptor if anything.
On a funny note, notice that they were able to get MS to help with the detailed tweeking. I wonder If I could get them to do that for OUR IIS server? heheheh
They tell you under the topology link on the site that the boxen are behind a raptor firewall. netcraft scans are going to be incorrect. Our companie's web server shows up as IIS 4 on BSDi. Our firewall is based on BSDi. Kinda funny.
This pretty much invalidates the whole thing for me. It is probably filtering everything but web traffic ( i would verify but the whole thing is so slow right now I can't deal.) They say that if a machine isn't behind a firewall it doesn't have anything worth securing. While this may be true this has nothing to do with testing the security of the machine behind the firewall. The firewall is what you are testing at this point. I've pretty much discarded this whole thing. Anyone can close everything but port 80 and 443. What a joke.
The consent law is more for emotional protection. Despite what some would have you believe, a 13 year old girl is NOT capable of dealing with the emotional aspect of sex.
Oh no that is just utter bullshit. I'm sorry for the anger here but I have to say it. If we allow more and more things to be "something someone can't help" then sooner or later people will get off (in court) just becuase they can't help it. I am sick and fucking tired of people saying the equivilent of "the devil made me do it". People need to take responsibility for what they do. What he did was sick and twisted. I'm not denying that things in life can cause trauma. I've had my share but where do we draw the line between what is people choose to do and what people "can't help"? The only thing I've ever noticed is that alot of sexual deviance is just like addiction. Follow me here:
Drugs - They say alot of hardcore drug use comes about by people wanting a better high
Sexual - You can't "get off" on just looking at simple pictures, you want something more. Something more twisted.
I will admit that it is an addiction but he made his own damn decision to even entertain the thought that a 13 year old girl was what he wanted.
If this had been my little sister, I would have fucking killed him.
Sorry for the rant but you are the master of your destiny. Take responsibility for it.
You can't. The only thing the new registrars can do is take orders and pass them on to NSI. AFAIK, that was the setup. They STILL control everything in the end. Someone blow up these people. (disclaimer: I am not responsible for the person who actually does this.);)
This has nothing to do with domains you have registered other than the fact that certain people were selected to get thier "secure free webmail". Needless to say I lost all faith in network solutions when I was going to change my domains to password instead of email from and I realized that the form form submitting your password was done non secure and they sent the password plaintext to your email address that you use as contact information. Jesus they are some fucking loosers for sure.
This is a serious question and maybe I'm fairly naive but has english really become that widespread in the computer industry that you're missing the boat if you haven't learned it? This seems kind of arogant on the part of us english speakers. I guess since we have so much tech industry here now, it's flipped from the way of the 80's when Japanese was the language to know for business.
This is the way I feel. I've been running linux for 5 years now and I have to say that I never learned more than when I started using it. I had to learn (god forbid we do anything for ourselves). Hell I started with slackware. Nothign could be worse. (and no I'm not bashing slackware, it's just that most people start with redhat or what not because slackware is for the hardcore geek.) On my FAQ page of my website I mention this fact. Anything that stimulates learning cant be all that bad;)
By the way I hope this doesnt turn into a pissing contest about who has been running linux longer. hehe I can see it now.
"I've been running it longer" - Jooe user "I started it!" - Linus Torvalds
This,to me is a no brainer. I was introduced to his works about 3 years ago and have gone through all of his books except his very first one, about the univeristy, the one he disowns. Hell I even read zodiac. I would start with snowcrash to get used to his style and then move to Diamond Age. Starting with Diamond Age is a difficult read, based on its size and his style as a whole. So my advice is GO BUY SNOWCRASH. Try to read them in order that he wrote them. Not that they have any relation to each other but its nice to see his evolution in writing.
One reason that this will be a good IPO is sympathy. The market in general doesn't care about the details really. Andover owns slashdot and freshmeat. Linux geeks like slashdot and freshmeat. Linux is buzzword of the year. Must buy.
This isnt meant as flaimbait. Everything commercial about linux could come crumbling down tommorow and I would still use it. But that's just me.
I got in via the alternate address and changed my settings. I would suggest doing this. Turn on vacation reply and then use this as the message.
I do not accept mail here. This account was setup without my permission by NSI. If you need to email me with important information please email me at the email address listed via whois.
This doesnt mean you can't use it with other distros. I honestly don't understand the problem. I am biased because i support redhat wholeheartedly but none the less, They are simply choosing redhat because it is the major NAME in the market. You and I know that redhat != linux but BigBusiness doesn't care. And they probably won't care in the future. You can still get RPM to run on other distros or use alien. Be happy that were getting the stuff at all. I'm sure once another distro comes into focus, the truth about the distros will come into play. But as usual, I could be full of shit;)
I don't think people feel like it's at the point of those books just yet but it IS one more step in that direction. It's easier to stop something BEFORE it gets moving than afterwards. Remeber the old quip about Nazi germany? "First they came for such and such and I said nothing, then they came for me and there was no one left to say anything." Without detracting from the horrors of Nazi Germany, that addage applies to what is going on today.
THANK YOU! I was sitting here trying to remember what the name of the city was that all the lil hackers hung out in in that book and it would NOT come to me. I have a feeling something like this WILL come about if the government keeps interfering like this.

ahhhh shit....gotta preview next time....at least the link is valid ;)
I would agree. Up till this point I had not bothered to research the cable modem that totalweb uses. While its only uses single des, I happen to love my cable modem. There was a serious period of regular outages not long after I got the service while they were upgrading thier backbone but otherwise it's been great. I remember seeing 150k/sec back when 2.2.10 kernel came out on the download. I even did a screencap to show my roomie when he got home. I am however lucky in the fact that I ALSO qualify for xDSL from bellsouth which is allowing several ISP's in the area to use thier lines. flashcom.com has full t1 speed sdsl for around 300 a month. Hella better than our last burstable bill at the office from uunet at several grand. ;)

Damn...ftp to floppies? At least I had a book by Volderking(sp) that had a slackware cd in the back. I bow to you now ;)

Actually they ARE part of netsol.
whois on integram.org shows registered to worldnic.net
worldnic.net shows registered to network solutions
gee do YOUR fucking homework next time.
well i guess that would work

It may be evil but SMIT kicks ass all over the commercial unix market. Says alot for me since I'm such an HPUX whore.
