thing that pissed me off was the so called free upgrade to Vista that was advertised. When I went to get it I was asked for 80 euros. Dirty robbing thieving bastards. Service charge and postage - absolutely mad and a total con.
Interesting, as I did this recently and found it to be quite straightforward.
Getting Oracle to run on it was bit more problematic.
Why do so many people dislike Solaris ? To a large extent it is just another Unix, and has done a lot to keep momentum on the *nix side of things going in the corporate world. Just to be clear - this is not a why do people dislike Sun question.
Most programmers need working examples and an easy to understand overview of what is in an api and how it should be used. Luckily this type of stuff is fairly quick to find - but for me there should be a place for it in JavaDoc, which also suffers from being very dry not to mentin terse.
whoever markeed this insightful must be one of the society of idiots I mentioned earlier as it has very little to do with the price of SMS.
Also comparing Telcos which are still largely monpolised despite limited attempts at competition with web hsoting which is highly competitive is also somewhat dubious.
Even companies like Apple don't make the kind of profit margins SMS must rake in.
Considering that SMS is a minor part of the whole phone spec (GSM), much simpler to do than good quality voice (SMS is fully asynchronous for a start and sent in a single packet, oh and it doesn't need to be duplex... etc etc), and uses a fraction of the bandwidth and assuming that the phone companies are making a reasonable profit on a normal 1 minute call... then go figure.
cos telecom companies are a bunch of robbing bastards, and people are stupid enough to keep paying.
For a long long time now a single text message has been priced at the same level (or thereabouts) as a 1 minute phone call, cosnidering the data in a text is off in less than a second as opposed to the 60 seconds of data in the equivalent phone call...
Sorry the Java line was meant to be tongue in cheek. A little bit of humour directed towards the envangelists out there.
I guess I should make some effort to take a look at Python sometime as it is used in quite a few interesting places. I've also had a few Java types tell me that Groovy is very good.
Too little time, too many programming languages;-) I must admit that since I became a family man that I struggle to keep up with it all - oh well, thats my exscuse anyway.
Tis a good point, although I do feel some people stretch the point a tad far - although I am not saying that this is a case in point.
Just because modern hardware is incredibly fast and has copious amounts of memory is no reason to abandon the idea of writing efficient software. Microsoft and their ilk are masters of making a blazingly fast machine run like a dog on it's last legs (ie the PC I had 5 years before).
As SimHacker has pointed out the Sim City port is not a case in point as it runs ridiculously faster than it needs to, so please don't take my words as an attack in that particular direction. In fact in the right context I am quite happy to use a scripting language, you know, something like Java for instance;-)
If the whole thing is designed, and written in C... and it works... then leave it alone.
I guess following on from the Java as a first programming language discussion that there just aren't enough good C programmers left in circulation:-) So it had to be ported to something if it was going to be developed.
I tried Ubuntu live on 3 of my homes PCs. It wouldnt work on any of them out of the box. hardware I guess. I gave up at this point so I dont really know.
To be fair I don't remember having this problem with a Knoppix CD a few years back.
I'm all for trying OS X next, guess I best get saving
A lot of people seem to get their history from films too, so all the piss poor US adaptations that mangle history are also a problem. The US have to be involved or where the deciding factor in numerous situations where they didnt even get a sniff in reality.
Enigma anyone.
or that steal historically important phrases, eg the thin red line...
Ok, I'm willing to let pure fantasy go. eg, there was some film about a yankee in the court of king arthur.... oh yeah and Kevin Costner as robin hood;-)
that said, calling Pirate Bay a child porn site and blocking it does seem ridiculous.
Believing in freedom of information and speech and providing a platform for that is hardly the same as posting the pictures and/or taking them - whatever anyone says.
I went for a look and got this nonsense:
Welcome to YouTube!

OK Cancel

So I'm still happily using XP (and Centos)
Parent gets my vote.
I agree that the one or the other premise is nonsense, and that one size will never fit all.
But again I keep hearing this web apps cut development costs argument which I don't buy at all.
Where server based apps such as web do make life better is deployment/publishing and control of the app.
Although a lot of client apps these days are very good at updating themselves over the internet ;-)
Hear hear !
Technological evangelical bandwagons. All aboard.
One size fits all is another problem. Silver bullet for sale over here, will work for all applications big and small, and solve all your problems.
Honest, guv.
I have developed Desktop apps and webapps, and my experience is that webapps take longer to develop.
The webapps are fast and versatile to develop claim left me wiping tea off of my keyboard.
Of course things get complicated by people coming out of university only knowing java and having a patterns book stuck up there arse.

So lets see, you think games companies should target a bunch of people who don't like paying for software ...
Oops, after traipsing through volumes of JavaDoc and never seeing anything more than the very basic I assumed it couldn't do it !
Guess I should go back and RTFM.
I still maintain that most JavaDoc I have seen - especially the official stuff - is pants.
I shall indeed take a look.
;-)
In the meantime I will continue with Google

Damn there are some mean spirited people out there. I generally spend my mod points on pumping up the good stuff.
comparing it to the Java API (and have you seen the really useful JavaDoc... :-( ) isn't setting the bar very high.
Oh the irony
Maybe the Iranians would sell it to NASA ?
Newer more efficient platforms like J2EE :-)

Why all the effort to port to C++ ? C rocks !
