My employer is going through the approval process for it now. Until it is official, I don't want to leak their name... don't want to risk my job and all. They tend to think things like this are market secrets until they can't go on denying it anymore... So time will tell.

  2. You forgot SunFire, Scott. on Sun Unveils More Linux Strategies · · Score: 5, Interesting

Scott Scott Scott... You are so close to hitting the mark. You forgot the most valuable part of Linux... it's VM ability.

Now if you were to port Linux to your SunFire platform, you could have a direct competitor with IBM's Mainframe Linux. How is that?

Imagine taking an E15k system... Setting it up as a single domain running Linux. Now, under that, use the Usermode Linux to create VM servers. No longer would this platform limit a system to particular boards... All these VM's could run in that large single domain, sharing it's CPU's, disks and IO. This would compete directly with IBM's implimentation of Linux on the mainframes.

Now let's take it a step further... IBM's mainframe is great for Linux VM's needing I/O intensive tasks. It's CPU isn't meant for many large number crunching VM's. The SunFire are. So while IBM gets big offering services on Linux VM such as Samba & NFS file services, Oracle & DB2, Enterprise email... You could be selling for the CPU intensive side. Graphics apps, XML and PDF parsers, engineering, etc.

Sun, you cannot afford to not do this. Sun's big server market will depend on it. It's only a matter of time before IBM fill's the niche for the CPU intensive VM's... And while I do like IBM and their commitment to Linux, I'd hate to see Sun drop off the radar. Competition is what brings about inovation, it's almost cliche.

  3. Anthrax vaccine not available to general public! on File Extensions And Monopolies · · Score: 1

I submitted this to slashdot as a headline, but it was rejected.

This is probably irresponsable reporting, but you should know. After it was reported that a second Florida man had been exposed to anthrax in Florida, I tried calling my local clinic (Valley Medical East Team, Kent Wa.) to get myself and my daughter vaccinated against this horrible disease. I was told they don't have it and that it isn't available to the general public.

    What?!?

While the Feds investigate whether it was terrorism or not that exposed the two men to the fatal disease, incubation time keeps on ticking. Pretty much by the time you realize you are sicker than the common cold, it's too late. Why on earth haven't they started vaccinating people?

Better to vaccinate and find out later that it was not terrorism than to wait to find out... when some people may be to late to save.

I really don't care if my insurance will cover it. I will pay for the shots. Just let me have them, is that so much to ask?

Come on CDC & FBI, let us get our vaccinations! I urge folks to call their congress man or woman and begin demanding the availability of these vaccinations. Because if it was terrorism, who knows how wide spread? I don't want to wait until it is too late.

Here are the CDC information pages on this.

You can lookup and call Valley Medical yourself to confirm this.

  5. What about anti-lease-ware commercials? on Ask IBM's Linux Marketing Director · · Score: 1

With Windows and Office XP paving the way to lease/rent ware... Why not run ads that explain what people are giving up if they go that route. The average public doesn't know what freedoms they stand to lose. While freeware & open source are nice, there is also something to be said for software that lets you do what you want with it after you buy it...

I happen to hate needing to re-license something I already bought.

We vote this Thursday. I know how I'm voting. Please, Boeing paycode 2 & 6 people... Remember to vote. All it takes is 50% +1 of *THE VOTES CAST* to get unionized. Vote how you will, vote your own conscience. Just please vote!

As for the folks who simply don't know better, a television ad campaign against lease-ware would be the best approach. Maybe IBM would help fund that. :)

I like the idea. When I wanted to package OpenSSH at work, it's one thing to build it on several platforms... But it is quite another to package it.

I like the idea of not having to know how to make an HP Swinstall package, a Sun pkgadd package, and others. Right now, I need to sholder tap someone to have a package made for a packaging system I am unfamilier with.

As for Windows flavors... I find myself wondering why even port anything to Windows... let alone package it. But of course, that is entirely biased. :)

  9. Qwest my be *BSD, but they still mess up royal. on How Qwest Runs Things · · Score: 1

I'd like to point out that their *BSD topography hasn't made them anymore co-ordinated. I am submitting this via 56k modem right now because of their screw ups. I had ISDN, working well with my Netgear ISDN router... until my lines *finally* DSL qualified. So I ordered DSL to replace my ISDN... First, they push the due date back 24 hours without telling me. I found out by calling for status on the original due date. Second, they set up the DSL line in their system, did not remove the ISDN line, and never activated the new DSL line in the outside box. Another day of delay. Third, they came out, disconnected the ISDN, hooked up the DSL to the box (and even ran it to my apartment, that was nice). But they hooked me into the wrong DSL cloud. Now it impacts my ability to telecommute to work. Last step so far, I am pending them changing me to the correct DSL cloud so I can *finally* have my DSL working... They say as late as next Friday, but my ISP pressured them into a possible Monday. Qwest, if you weren't the only DSL provider in town, you'd be out of business *so* fast. Qwest, can you reinburse me for the modem I had to buy as an interim solution? If my employer needs me to catch a plane to work, will you reimburse my employer?

You've seen it in the /. news, you've seen the articles... We lose because we have no political power. It's time for banding together. Starting a political party or adopting one and making it our own. Only then can we have people with our interests in mind in Congress, the White House, and most importantly... the courts. We need a movement, where we can move as one powerful force against those who hold us back. A strong nation wide I.T. union would be a good move as well. Corporations could be stung by such a union when they try a legal stunt we didn't like. America would be hurting if every I.T. professional were to strike together over an issue. With both of these in place we could begin to undo the DMCA, save file sharing technologies, fix patent laws and processes, re-structure copyright law. We are well overdue for this. Currently we have no trump card, the Fed knows it... The Press knows it... and the corporations know it. I for one am ready for such a plan of action. I will vote to support my rights to code, to speak, and reverse engineer. Will you? Let's ask /. if they would help us co-ordinate the incipient stages of such a movement. How about it people? How about it /.? Will anyone agree to starting a forum for co-ordinating our communal beliefs into a firm political position? Will anyone agree to run for office based on these findings and support them? I will say right now I am *not* the best candidate for any public office, but I throw my name into the hat. I'll run for an office or gladly support another who has a less colorful past than myself. I need to start reading up on existing parties... are the Libertarians close to what we'd be looking for? I know that the Democrats and Republicans aren't... and I was a hard core Republican before. Come on folks, lets start the work, lets find some good men and women and put them into office!

The loss of a 'pure' dos mode in Windows is something that has been needed for a long time, simply in the name of progress. As for UMSDOS and BeOS being troubled by this, it shouldn't be for long. The virtual file systems used in Linux's UMSDOS, BeOS and other similar loop back ideas still work... just booting into them has changed. I hope the Linux community would see this as an opportunity to develop a newer Win32 based loader for booting into these opperating systems. It's a chance for new innovation. By simply complaining that your current functionality has been lost, all you do is portray the Linux community as non-innovative backward thinkers. Instead, embrace this change... Support your open source programmers and help them build a better and more user friendly tool. Just a thought. *TheDarb

  13. For higher speed diskless clients... on Cheap Homemade X-Terminals? · · Score: 1

try putting in more ram in them instead of a hard drive. 128 meg, instead of a hard drive, configure properly could be very fast.

Picture booting of bootrom or floppy, dhcp to configure networking, download most important bin's and libs to ramdisk with tftp or nfs, nfs mount everything else (don't need much, else, you are just running an X-server/terminal...).

Lets say after the ramdisk, you've left 32 meg at the least for your X-server to run in... It's plenty. :)

All these machines would start X as an XDMCP query to your master server. Everyone is then logging into your beefy master server, with the apps running on it alone.

Only downside is when your Master Server dies or is rebooted... Everyone is bumped out.

Put cheap s3 video cards in these babies, or something else inexpensive.

  14. What about Public Libraries, Metallica? on Ask Metallica About Napster · · Score: 1

Okay, so lets say you get what you want from Napster... You going to go after public libraries next?

Everyone knows (or should know) that music CD's are available at plenty of city and county libraries across America. How much you want to bed your CD's are in their collections?

Anyone can just check it out, take it home, rip as high a quality set of MP3's as they want... then return the CD.

They can even dupe the CD if they have a burner... and many MP3 collectors do. Why? Because you can put, oh say, 6 - 12 hours of music on it, depending on the quality of the MP3's.

So you win a battle, but lose a war. In the end, all you do is get bad P.R., ticked fans, and people more determined to cut your revenue then ever.
