  1. They certainly didn't do this to me. on Verizon, Copper, Fiber, and the Truth · · Score: 1

My fiber comes in on the opposite side of my property than my copper, and the Verizon tech didn't even walk to that side of the house. I still have copper into the house. Heck, there might even be an active POTS jack left...I have a habit of removing them when I remodel rooms. The only cable cut here is the cable, and that was by me getting a little to vigorous with a shovel while pulling a tree. I think the copper cut depends on your installer. That, and an 8 foot wide concrete slab.

That, and DES has a lovely mathematical weakness where it can be broken down in to 1-bit vector operations. Makes 2.6 GHz 64-bit process break it real fast. You can through ALOT of 1-8 character passwords at that in a VERY short time. heck, my 240MHz 64-bit PA-RISC with vectirized 1 bit operations ran cracking stuff faster than my 32-bit 450MHz PIII when I used to do password auditing.

Or perhaps the internal structure of GCC is not suited for this type of modern architecture. and a ground up re-write of GCC is not likely to happen anytime soon.

  4. Re:As a southern Idahoan... on Idaho Gets Serious About Broadband · · Score: 1

as a southern idahoan in central Boise, dead center, even, i can say that i still cannot get DSL. But cable works just fine, and is faster than the DSL option (400/128 is 45, 800/200 is 60 or so, but i don't pay for local phone service from Qworst)

As to the credit, i had never heard of it, but many of the bedroom communities around here have a large number of technical people living there. We have Extended Systems, Micron Technology, Hewlett Packard, Zilog, and numerous tech support call centers in the area, and some people commute up to 45 minutes on 75 mph freeways. Having a Broadband option for a larger portion of southern Idaho would be of great benefit to those who are telecommuting. The manager of the group cubed next to mine lives just north of McCall and the need to meet personally as often would be alleviated by this. New Meadows, for those of those who want to look up a real small town.

Read Walter Miller, Jr. Canticle for St. Leibowitz should satisfy your religion. and good writing. he wrote a sequel a few (40 or so) years later, and it is good as well.

  6. The Saint Song Espresso PC II on Full Powered, Compact, Gaming Rigs? · · Score: 2

Have you looked at this option? I know it is an i810E chipset, but if you can live with 640x480, it is the ultimate in portability. iBuyPower.com has them for sale, and a search on Google can find reviews for you. Might just be what you are after. LAN, sound, and everything is already included in a SMALL for factor.

  7. Net.Bank on OS-Independent Web Banking? · · Score: 1

Been using them about since they opened, and the majority of my banking is done from HP-UX and Linux, but have also had success w/ Windows, Mac, Mac OS X and various other. My only problem has been BeOS (need decent javascript!). I think even QNX worked.

It is the same old stories about being standards compliant that everyone is always singing, just slightly off key in some places.

Or, the other reason teachers do not teach this stuff. Ever read James Clavell's A Childrens Story? Try that one. Real short. Real scary, and way to true. No better way to influence a society than to start at the bottom with the children. Just go hang at the mall and listen to the kids walking around now. ------- ...use sparingly, can cause rash thoughts...
