While an official announcement has yet to be made, the long-awaited second service pack for Windows 2000 is now available from Microsoft. As always, this latest service pack incorporates updates to improve security, application and hardware compatibility, Windows setup, and system stability. SP2 does not include any new features according to the software giant, simply fixes and updates. Expect more information shortly on the SP2 Web site, and here on BetaNews. Those wishing to download the 101MB update may do so via FileForum.

Im a dj myself so I use Napster to download the full song to decide if I want to buy it or not after I hear clips of it on record store websites. These labels are all in Europe and I don't think are with the RIAA so hopefully they won't be affected.
I know universal, sony, bmg, don't make any good trance.

I don't know what is wrong with all you people. But I saw this coming for at least a year and a half. 3DFX sucks ass. They have no good products.. they give excuses to why they don't support 32bit accelerated. NVidia since the TNT has had the superior product. (They became #1 soon after they ipo'd) Look at 3dfx's price 1.67 or so. They are being sued by them, so it would be cheaper to buy them out and own all their patents. Also they get good engineers too. The sad part is i've been telling my dad to buy amd/nvda for 3 years everytime he asks for advice and he still hasn't. Lol
Yea what's his name fagot ass runs that server. Kicked me off because I was swearing. They don't allow cussing lol. They had my supervisor talk to me about it. It's because I was too good. My nick on there was dee[RiSC]
I did it for 2 years and it was the most nervewrecking job. I did ISP support so it wasn't as bad as DSL because there are hundreds of reasons DSL isn't working and no one knows. (4 months to get dsl at one of our offices, 3 months at another).
The worst tech support job was for AT&T WorldNET. It was just like the Pacbell guy explained it, the way they treated you, but it wasn't as bad handling the calls. They had good help desk information databases. Tier2, Tier3 techs that actually knew something. But the supervisors were dicks.
When I worked at Sprint we got like 2 calls a day (literaly), so that was beautiful. We just sat around talking and surfing.
Next I worked at Oltronics. I was the only tech support guy. All the calls would come to me and I would get messages from people. Who I would have to call long distance and troubleshoot. At this point I did dialup support in my sleep, I knew it all in my head.
Last place I worked at was MPInet. I got caught playing quake and they deleted it. And my supervisor was a dick. They had us clean the building (mop, change toilet paper, trash, etc) which was really stupid. I loved the other techs there, but eventually they started making us work Saturdays and Sundays, and then to 35 hours. And I went to school so I quit.
Now i'm a systems administrator at a small non profit. I'm basically my own boss (I have a boss but she isn't on my back). I handle all the computer issues at the company. I have no stress and I make my own schedule. And I get paid a lot.:)
At all costs don't work tech support. Unless you need some type of computer experience to move to the next level. Do it, become a manager and then go find a good job.

I own a red '89 Honda CRX Si. It has the usual performance upgrades. I got pulled over so many times in Los Angeles just because i'm young and i'm driving a fixed up car. One time I was pulled over and I got strip searched (out of 4 other cars that were with me, the cop changed lanes in between us for like 5 minutes and eventually pulled me over). Then they let us go. Another time I was making a left and a cop was about 500 ft behind me. He hurried up and came up next to me, flashed his lights, looked for like 30 seconds and made a U-turn and bounced.
When my house was robbed and trashed the cops took 4 hours to get there.
I could tell you at least 50 stories of how the cops are fucks. Especially in Los Angeles. Other places i've lived (MA, FL) are a LITTLE better. But there is corruption everywhere. No one really wants to help people. Why are tickets part of city budgets? How about parking tickets in San Francisco. THERE IS NO PARKING IN SAN FRANCISCO. WHY DON'T THEY FIX THAT RATHER THAN HIRE HUNDREDS OF DPT OFFICERS. I'VE GOTTEN LIKE 15 PARKING TICKETS IN FRONT OF MY OWN HOUSE!!
I have no respect for police whatsoever.
And i'm so happy there are some alternative candidates for president this year that actually agree with my views.
I'm not really managed well at my work. My original job description was to do support and upgrades. Sort of just a basic Tech. However, I'm overly qualified and I can do much much more. I thought I'll help out by doing more. But it doesn't agree with my salary. And I have to deal with management politics to get anything done which annoys the shit out of me.
Granted, I'm only working part time and for a non profit, I know they can etch a little more out for my salary. I love my bosses, but it's the management above them that I really hate. But pay could make me temporarily happy. Enough time to get all the things they need done.
The management underestimates how IT is important to the company. And likes to make technology decisions without any of the IT staff present.
Anyway.. enough ranting.
Basically the environment is really good. The pay sucks (I work in San Francisco). I am young and I have a lot I want to do. (DJ, Snowboard, Travel, etc) I am afraid i'll end up in a crappy situation if I look for another job. I've had 2 previous jobs which I hated the environment. And I only work part time because I'm in college.:(
I don't believe that is the way to think about it. Why should designers have to be aware of anything. The w3, browser makers, and operating system makers should make sure things work on every platform.
There are millions of people designing webpages. Is it really good to teach every designer to keep this in mind? It's impossible. You can fix it easily at the top, or let the end users worry about it.
I agree with you. I have a lot of great ideas for my company's website. But I'm stuck waiting for management approvals and changes. A lot of them are ugly. They don't know anything about web design.

Kick it on the stereotyping.
One thing you missed is there are a lot of people that work in the technology industry here. A lot of us don't have time to volunteer. A lot of us are in college too. And more importantly we must have fun. You can't be a gimp working 24/7. I myself have to hang out, travel, snowboard, dj, etc.
I would love to help if I can do it electronically. Donations, petitions, alerts on issues very important that affects a lot of people.
I am not a great leader. I have already thought about it. I asked the Slashdot staff and they said a lot of people have asked them, but they didn't do anything. I looked at the EFF. I wasn't too impressed.
And there is money out there. Nonprofits get LOTS AND LOTS of money. There is plenty of money in Silicon Valley to go to something like this. I'm sure even companies that are being sued over an issue would donate too. It sucks, I read about lawsuits all the time lately this year, and their decisions are going to effect the whole industry. And big business has control. It's sickening.

Whats up with all the stereotypes and statistics (few high scored posts b4) in these posts today? Hehe.
High School:
Anyway.. Everyone studies economics, government, and lots of history in high school. It's pretty hard to get work without graduating from high school. Maybe college should start in 10th grade. Because 10th-12th are just fuck around times. I think they keep you there just so you can mature. Because you have to take the same classes over in College. Unless you take AP classes which is just extra work for you, for no reason, when you should be enjoying your high school years.
College:
Government (at three colleges I've been at) has been required. US History is also required. Economics isn't, but social sciences is. Also several humanities classes.
And I agree with you. It should be changed to Tech news that matters. I'm not a nerd. I don't believe everything on Slashdot matters.

I don't really agree with this article. I skimmed through it quickly because I'm leaving for work right now. But anyway..
You might save money and time with an ASP. But what happens if they go under? What if they change their mind? What if you need to customize?
It's very important for nonprofits to hire a good tech staff because it is a vital part of a business. There are still computer issues, web hosting, purchasing, blah blah. If you already have a staff they might as well build something with free software to handle what you need rather than rely on another company.
I mean a ASP sounds really nice to me.. no work for me. But I can't make it how I want and I am at the mercy of another company.
I'm currently in the process of creating an intranet for the company I work for. I don't want to go with a premade software or ASP. Instead I am looking at a program called PHPGroupware (www.phpgroupware.org). They develop modules like IMAP email, to do list, calendar, file sharing/editing, etc. Now I can create the pages I need, customize their files and I save a lot of time.
Also I am going to start contributing to the project since they are helping me at work and so I can help others. And I'll do it on my work's time!

I see that KDE is making a browser, but it is limited to KDE. Why doesn't Sun, IBM, or VALinux, or anyone try writing their own free browser that is fully standards compliant?
My company helps welfare, dropouts, etc with training and assistance with finding jobs. As soon as we find some officespace for our new place we will be opening a technology center. I don't know what this is going to be about yet, because it hasn't been put in paper. However, there are many nonprofits here in san francisco that already help high school kids to become programmers or webmasters (opnet for one). One of the guys that volunteers with us on our IS Board helps run a lot of internet startups. You might be surprised how many companies donate computers to nonprofits too. We got 6 brand new computers from ibm, two netprinters (1k each?), and two scanners. But our budget would also surprise you, but I'll keep that on the down low:).
Anyway, look for your neighborhood nonprofits and get hired there and shape the future that way. At least you get paid (not as much as in the private sector, no stock options!!), and you have others that have the same objective.
I know I could be making 3 times what I am right now, but I believe in the work we do. And i'm in college so I can't work 40 hours.
A site/organization that fought tech issues would be better. Setup lobby groups in Washington. Have petitions. Congress email, addresses, etc. Accept donations to fund it. For tech workers by tech workers. (ftwbtw.com)
There's one flaw with this. There are millions of john doe's $insertShopHere around the world. Every city you go someone is going to have the same named business.. same with a lot of things. Like Soccer teams.. I know everyone has a local Jaguars team or something.
Let's be inefficient so government doesn't be big brother? That makes no sense. That's a problem with government. We have a deficit, have you forgotten? Making them more efficient would lower our taxes.
This is simple. Public internet labs, possibly run at libraries. A lot more, and a lot faster, than what is already availible. And if you don't want the general public to crowd libraries, then open seperate places called computing centers or something. Then don't eliminate the walkin part. That way if you can't get to those computing centers you can still do things like normal. I for one would like to pay my DMV fees online. Request my driving record. I HATE waiting in line at DMV. There are other things.. Dealing with SSI, Welfare, unemployment. Digital divide? Big deal if someone can't order from amazon.com. Guess they have to go to Barnes and Nobles. It's a convenience not a requirement. You can still do research papers at the library. Someone please point out something that can't be done in person that has to be done on computer. Kids should be educated on simple computing knowledge in school. If they don't want to learn, thats their own problem. I know people that can use computers but still like doing things in person.
