On Leopard at least it's a directory which contains dependencies, resources plus the real executable. The name ends with.application or.app, like a file extension, only used on a directory, and that's how the OS knows it's an application. But in fact, it's a directory tree. It's just that the window manager shows it to you as a an icon, but if you open a terminal, and cd into it, you'll see it's a directory. I really like this approach.
Hehe, there's a reason the idea popped into my mind after watching the iPad (which is a bigger iPod touch really). Yes, that is exactly what I imagine. The damn thing is probably as powerful as full desktop PC was 10-15 years ago.
But the iPod would need to lose the multi-touch screen. The device how I see it would be really just a core containing cpu+ram+ssd+videocard and nothing else, except some soft of ports for I/O.
Ever since I saw the iPad I've been thinking that they should make a full computer contained inside a VHS-sized box that can just be slid into a laptop or docking station or multi-touch encasing. It would be like an iPad sans the touch screen. It would be a computer - CPU + RAM + SSD, all contained in a box. Imagine the whole computer box having the form factor of a VHS casette, but thinner. And the laptop case would be just the display+keyboard+batteries+maybe wifi, with a hole below the keyboard in which you insert the computer like you insert a VHS in the video. And when you return home you take it out of the laptop case and slide it in a docking station to power a 22 inch LCD with a real keyboard. And you have a multitouch screen, again with a hole in which you plug it in.
This could be done with an ARM processor and SSD - it has no moving parts, and is fanless. The system would be underpowered, and ARM means no Windows, so I don't know if people would actually buy it.
I remember reading an article years ago mentioning that queen bees become queens because their were fed a special diet not because they are genetically different. In fact they said it while explaining how if a queen bee dies the workers simply pick a worker larva at random and feed it royal jelly and it becomes a new queen bee. The article spoke of it even then as a well accepted fact, not some breaking news.
So this can't be the news. From reading the article I gather the researchers discovered the actual chemical mechanism, whatever it is. That's the only news here. But most comments' authors here on slashdot seem to talk about 'nature vs nurture' as if we discovered worker larvas can become queen bees just this minute.
What's more interesting is to note that the bees' DNA is obviously crafted to look for that different 'royal jelly', and uses it as a trigger. The royal jelly doesn't change the DNA, it's just a code for which the DNA looks.
No monetary figure will be fair. Choosing any amount will allow those rich enough to simply ignore the law.
If you're using torrents, it means you aren't rich enough to simply buy the movies. The rich will never be charged for using torrents as they simply have the money to buy the DVD. So only poor people will be charged.
It's true, but that is the problem of third-party software. The same issues hold for Firefox addons, and for the ability to run programs written by anyone in your PC, as opposed to, say, the iPad. It's up to the end-user to decide what to install and what not to install.
I don't know. This system where teachers move from classroom to classroom is used in Eastern Europe, where I live. I personally don't know if it's any better, really, just different.
But income taxes are paid on income, not your accumulated net worth. Or do you suggest that each month a percentage of all your wealth (not just this month's income but all your net worth) be taxed at a flat rate?
Having 90% of all the wealth that is accumulated by everyone for the last few decades is different than having 90% of this month's income.
What about GNU JRE? I know ORACLE owns Java when they bought Sun, but is that only Sun's implementation, or can they charge you for using free implementations, too (via patents I assume)?
Windows 7 search doesn't work for me. It doesn't find stuff, or makes it hard/impossible to find stuff. I actually resorted to using grep on Win 7. I never had to do that with Win XP. With Windows XP even though the search was slow, if the stuff was there you'd eventually find it.
Could I recommend to you trying out Total Commander? It has a much faster search function than XP, and it works on Win7.
Alternatively just go to the Options page in google's Chrome version, and uncheck "Use a suggestion service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar". Crome stops the 'snooping' then.

That's what I thought, too, lol
Nice idea! Virtual mod point from me.
Darn it, you found me! Oh, ****, I just gave away my slashdot account, too!

An ARM version of Windows won't let you run third-party binary exe-s compiled for Intel CPUs.
Maybe having more than that will insure the incompetent devs don't ignore you as well?
google.is.doomed /blekko

This might be a hit, like addons in Mozilla Firefox.
Hehe, when I read the first few words of the article's title I too thought it was about a six-year old getting sued by the RIAA.
Could they use Chrome Frame?

Save it as .csv file (stands for Comma-Separated Values, I think) and Excel will open it automatically. It won't even ask you for the delimiter.

They do identify themselves as FBI agents.
I think her complaint is with Yahoo.
Oh, also does Chrome and its forks work nicely with linux?
Yes, the linux version has been available for quite some time now.

OK, I agree about Dell, but can we put Microsoft in the list?
