"Are you sure about that? Think about messing around on the Internet. Ten years ago that was just getting popular in universities and now it's perfectly normal in the home."
10 years ago the Internet was firmly established in the universities. I had dial in slip access back in 1993 and shell access two years earlier. Yes we weren't "surfing the web" but we had email, Usenet, telnet services, gopher, IRC, FTP and Archie.
"If you want to fire me for not buying into your password scheme, fine, but I hope you can show that your password scheme is more valuable to the company than what I do."
When the company gets compromised through your insecure password and the coffers get emptied to an offshore bank in the Virgin Islands and you no longer get to collect a paycheck. I think that would be about the time. But then again, it would only be the IT staff that would get shafted and have trouble finding a new job. I'm sure the individual who chose the name of their dog as their password would have no problem finding new work.
They didn't used to have administrator rights. Not until they used the DNA program running on their computers to hack the admin password and promote themselves.
Um no. Tron featured hand doctored live action film in terms of the scenes with actual actors in it. The environments and suit effects could be considered hand animated. Many objects in the movie were rendered. Everything from the floating Bit to the recognizers, lightcycles, intro sequence etc.

"And I don't mean your Dungeons and Dragons character"
Aw come on. I agree with your statements to the parent poster but you don't need to combat sexism with another stereotype. I played lots of D&D when I was a kid. I don't live in my parents basement. I have actually dated women and had sex and even produced offspring. In fact the last person I knew who still played Dungeons and Dragons was a 30 year old married woman.
Aside from all manner of innovative little projects, I think these devices could be used to setup a quick snoop on the network. They might actually be more useful for breaking security than enabling it. Most companies don't have their networks secure to the port level, so popping one of these on an open port and hiding it under the cable mess could be easy enough. You'd be limited by the small buffer, but it might be possible to grab password hashes and then dump the stuff off over the net to a remote server. Or run scans and exploits internally on the LAN, since most LAN security tends to be more lax than the Internet connection security.
These days you can program your switches to shut the port off if they detect an unauthorized device accessing the network. I'm sure there are ways around this, but it's much easier to configure at the switch level. Consider that the port itself is just a set of wires tracing back to the switch, it's not "live" unless you are plugged into a live switch. So rather than have lots of little microcomputers controlling the ports themselves (which increases installation and maintenance cost) you have an intelligent switch which can turn off the port when unauthorized access is attempted.
And I'm sure that if something were hardcoded to the particular model of cell phone it would be nice and fast too. But coding a mobile game in assembly would be the stupidest thing you could do. Mobile phones don't last long on the market, and newer models are released all the time. You need to be able to right a program to a platform spec such as the Java J2ME so that it will be able to run (or run with minor modifications) on the next generation of phones or on phones with different processors.
" and the fact that the work I had been doing at Id for the last half of Doom 3 development was basically pretty damn boring.... but the work at Id is back to a high level of interest now that we are working on a new game with new technology."
While that could be the Doom 3 expansion, it doesn't sound like it. Maybe something new we'll see in '07 or so.
Yes the original series had campy elements. But someone immitating Kirk's vocal delivery or Spock's "fascinating" just goes over the top right into the realm of pure campiness. As in it becomes unintentional parody. I suggest viewing an episode of Star Trek New Voyages as an illustration of what I mean. Even with professional actors I doubt it would work.
This is a horrible idea. Just what would be needed to completely kill off the franchise. How about a whole show full of Wesley Crusher teen angst in a Federation uniform. Visually it would be hard to jive with the old series, and having actors who are trying to potray the old characters might lead to pure campiness. Ok so now everyone can tell how it would be great if they did it right - but come on people, you KNOW they wouldn't do it right. I'm just hoping whatever new series comes out has Shatner singing the theme song. Hell, just have him sing the lyrics to the orignal theme from the '60s series.
"opening a file up in an application from the Explorer GUI is equally odd"
Well you can just double click on the file in explorer and it will open with its associated application. Or you can right click and choose "open with" if you want to open it in a non standard app. I never use the drag to application in the task bar method.
That would be Michael Crichton. And Minority Report was based on a story by Phillip K. Dick. I don't think they inducted Spielberg for his writing, I'm sure it's for his work bringing Sci-Fi to the movies. I don't agree with it. Spielberg always strikes me a director who likes to use cheap appeals to emotion to manipulate his audience. A little heavy handed for me.
Custom emulation - as in a finely tailored version of the game done for the PSP wouldn't be a problem. MAME style emulation isn't the most efficient or speedy, it's aim is accuracy. I don't know if a straight port of MAME would be able to run all the late generation ROMs. Some ROMs have a problem running on the Xbox due to memory constraints - even considering that the Xbox has 64MB of RAM. You don't get any savings if you are scaling from the original source ROM on the fly rather than loading re-rendered bitmaps from a custom port. I think it would be very cool if PSP homebrew stuff took off. I'd love to have a portable that would run emulators and have a decent button layout. SNES could be sweet on the PSP. I'd even put up with having to shell out more for Sony's lame memory stick rather than an SD card.
I can also use an iPod for days before it dies, when a PSP will probably wear out in about five hours, which is shorter by far than your average work day."
Let's not exaggerate please. I have an iPod Mini - 6 to 8 hours battery life is more like it. Also if you forget to charge it nightly the battery will drain down too. I realize this is normal, but it sure is a bummer when you pick it up to listen and realize you've got less than 10% battery life left. And it doesn't come with a nice dock (extra $$) so I am wary of always leaving it sitting on top of my computer attached by a cord. Easy to knock over and bang on the floor.
Which is why I got a PocketPC for gaming. Pity about the button layout - but 2 buttons are about all you need for the older ROMs. I run MAME as well as emulators for NES, Gameboy, TurboGraphix and Commodore 64 quite nicely. Gives me that old skool gaming goodness. SD Cards are pretty cheap for memory too.
Oh and btw - the last MAME set I saw was about 10 gigs. Of course I don't think even the PSP has the processor to emulate stuff from the late '90s.

I wouldn't use that password. It's the same one Q*berts been using since the early '80s.

What's a matter? Did John Romero make you his bitch?

If you look at the post from December 2004:
" and the fact that the work I had been doing at Id for the last half of Doom 3 development was basically pretty damn boring.... but the work at Id is back to a high level of interest now that we are working on a new game with new technology."

Nah, I'm talking about the LYRICS to the theme:
Beyond the rim of the starlight
My love is wandering in starflight
I know he'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love strange, love a star woman teaches
I know his journey ends never
His star trek will go on forever
But tell him while he wanders his starry sea
Remember me, remember me

Why do you think Kirk left Earth? All the REALLY hot women are out in space!
They don't let Orion slave girls into the Federation.

No wonder that guy on American Idol quit. Couldn't take the shame.
Three bursts of three shots, nine hits to the head. Damn, those are nice helmets.
And indeed it was. An SGI Irix system running 3D File System Navigator.
Kiddies. Please don't feed the troll, mmmm kay?
