  1. excite@home doesn't really provide the service on Mobilestar Less Mobile; Excite@Home Less Exciting · · Score: 1

The service is really provided by ATT broadband. excite is just a portal. AtHome provides some sort of caching technology. AtHome was supposed to provide mail server - but they did an absolutely awful job. AtHome was also supposed to provide part of the customer service, again absolutely awful job.

  2. Wouldn't it make more sense to modify browser? on FTC Shuts Down 'Pop-Up Trapping' Sites · · Score: 1

Trying to shut down everybody that does this sort will obviously be futile.

Seems to me that it would be much easier, and more effective, to make some changes in the browser; so rogue sites would not be able to disable back button, etc.

  3. Well rounded = useless in computer field on Is A "Well-Rounded" Education a Good One? · · Score: 1

At least that is what I found, in my 22 years of I.T. experience. Employers want very specific skills - right down to product and version. Employers don't care about what you know about history or even math or algorithms.

Employers want: C++, Java, Oracle, HP-UX, Solaris, etc.

  4. News is no big deal on AMD To Close Plants, Lay off 2300, Lose Gateway · · Score: 2, Informative

Dont' let the market's knee-jerk reaction fool you.

Fabs 14 and 15 are antiquated. They were built in 1985. They do not manufacture flash, Athlons nor Durons. They manufacture chips for a business that was sold to LSCC called Vantis. These fabs were not being used because LSCC has a 9 month inventory on hand. Now was a good time to renegotiate the contract manufacturing with LSCC and shift the responsibility to a lower cost contract fab such as TSMC. In doing so AMD cuts costs.

Also, Gateway has not been a huge AMD customer anyway.

  5. Training? on Software Aesthetics · · Score: 1

To be a chemical engineer, you must have training in chemistry. To be an electrical engineer you must have training in electrical engineering.

To be a software engineer? Any self-taught hack can call him/her self a software "engineer."

  6. ISPs only work with MSIE on Linux: Browser Wars · · Score: 0, Redundant

So only MSIE really counts. Very few people will use linux for internet access until ISPs accept linux. ISPs will not accept linux until linux has MSIE. The reason I don't use linux for my home desktop is that I cannot get $4.95 ATT worldnet on a linux box.

ISPs that do not support linux include: ATT (broadband or worldnet), CompuServ, Earthlink, AOL, MSN, and just about any others.

  7. XP: a gamble that is important to tech sector on Windows XP To Block Use Of "Troublesome" Drivers · · Score: 2, Insightful

For those who didn'tt know: the entire PC sector is counting on XP to pull it out of the year long tech wreck. By PC sector I am refering to: INTC, AMD, MU, GTW, DELL, CPQ, etc. XP seems like a huge gamble for MS, either it will be a great success, or an awful failure. Considering MS history, it is hard to believe that anything from MS will be a failure - no matter how bad it sucks. But, I keep hearing people say that they want no part of XP.

What are the odds that another planent, not only has inhabitants that are exactly like humans physically; but those inhabitants speak English? Yet, it seems that the astronauts never even suspect that they are on earth. Never mind that the mystery plantent is exactly like earth in: gravity, atmosphere, sun, moon, temperature, bodies of water, vegatation, animals, and so on. But when human inhabitants speak English . . . I dunno, just seems like you might get a clue.

  11. OT: Free/cheap ISP for Linux? on Juno, NetZero To Merge Into 2nd-Largest ISP · · Score: 1

I use AT&T worldnet at 4.95 a month, can't get it for Linux. Used to use AT&T broadband, can't get that for linux either. NetZero and Juno have never worked for linux. Of course MSN and AOL don't work for linux. A lot of DSL companies will not support Linux. I happen to think this is one big reason that linux is not succeding on the desktop.

Most in IT don't have either degree. Lots of re-treads for medical and everything else. My degree is math with cs concentration: a complete waste of time, effort, and money.
