Most Illegals come to the US for jobs and/or social services. Deny them that, and they will stop coming. This would be *far* less expensive, and more effective. That would take care of about 70% of the problem. We would still need to patrol for the real bad guys. No system is perfect, but this would make a lot of sense.
1. Make e-verify mandatory. 2. Have IDs that are very difficult, if not impossible, to forge. Our money is very difficult to counterfeit, why not do the same with IDs? 3. No ETINs for illegals. 4. No sweeping amnesty, ever. No rewards for breaking our law. 5. As I understand it, in Mexico, you spend, at least, two years in prison for entering the country illegally. That is for the first offense. The US should adopt, and enforce, similar laws. 6. No more anchor-baby loophole. 7. Prison time for anybody who knowing hires an illegal.
See how easy that is? Fixing the illegal immigration problem is not that hard. The problem is corrupt US politicians who do not want to fix the problem, but the corporate owners don't want the problem fixed.
Try telling RNs that they have to work an extra 3 hours for no pay, and see how fast you have a strike on your hands. RNs complain when they only make 1.5X for overtime.
PJ: Microsoft has no shame. Windows is not a generic name? And didn't Microsoft block Lindows from using even a sounds-like-Windows name because of a claimed trademark? I mean, come on. Here's the Microsoft filing, if you are in the mood for a good laugh or a curled lip, depending on your mood today.

New ebooks can cost less than new real books, although the overall cost advantage may go to real books. First, with ebooks you have to consider the cost of the device itself, maybe a few hundred dollars, although they are getting cheaper. And you can be sure any device you use to read an ebook is lot more fragile than a real book. Try dropping an ebook reader, and a real book, off a four story building onto a cement sidewalk. An ebook reader is also a lot more likely be stolen. Also, used ebooks can not be bought, or sold. Sometimes I can buy a used real book for next to nothing, and then sell it for about the same price. Also, replacing an ebook reader's battery can be very expensive - well over $100.
The thing that really annoys me the most about ebooks is the "Tower of Babble" problem. There are multiple ebook formats, and "Digital Rights Management" (DRM) restrictions. With a real book, I have no concern about which electronic format is used.
No one ebook reader can read all the different ebook formats. Typically, ebooks are not transferable between different ebook devices. I can possibly remove the DRM, and convert the format, but that is a headache at best. The may also affect the cost of an ebook relative to a real book. For example, if I want to read a "Nook" ebook on my Kindle, I am expected to buy the book again. I can get an ebook in ePub format from my local library, but I would not be able to read on my Kindle, I would expected to buy a separate device for that.
A lot of the problems with ebooks can be avoided by using a multi-function device, such as a desktop, laptop, netbook, iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. These device will read practically any ebook format, plus they do a lot more. On the downside, these devices are heavier and more expensive, and the charge on the batteries does not last nearly as long. Also multi-function devices typically have an LCD screen, not an e-ink/e-paper background, that means that multi-function devices may be more difficult to read in bright light. Then again, multi-function devices typically have color screens, and are easier to read in dim light, and I am more likely to read in bed, than on the beach. Why go to the beach to read a book?
The easiest way to make food from a grassy hill with poor soil is a grazing animal.
Except that is not the way that most farm animals are fed. Most of the food grown, in this country, is fed to farm animals. Farm animals are essentially raised in meat factories, they do not graze on grassy hills.
Sure eating bugs would be better for the environment. For that matter we could become vegetarians, stop over populating, stop driving gas guzzlers, stop buying junk we don't need. How about stopping wars?
The trick is not finding more efficient ways to serve human needs, but to change human values, and behaviour.
You sir/madam are implying that PJ lacks integrity because she has been forced to delete terrible posts that make Groklaw look awful.
If somebody posts something to make groklaw "look awful," then PJ, or somebody else on groklaw, can dispute that particular post.
When somebody starts deleting posts, just because those posts don't conform to her point of view, then onlookers can never be sure if the opposition has made a relevant point. I'm sorry, but that does put her integrity in question.
PJ is not just censoring pornography, spam, profanity, or anything like. She is censoring opinions that she does not want others to read. That is not a fair discussion, and everybody knows it.
I think you misunderstand the argument. Yes, PJ has the legal right to censor her own blog - nobody is arguing otherwise. But, she loses a lot of credibility by doing so. You have to wonder, why can't PJ's argument hold up to opposition? Everybody has to know: when you are reading groklaw forums, you are reading a one-sided debate.
I can't believe that it's a good idea to make kids learn about line numbers, with all of the associated complexity, rather than to use a simple text editor.
FYI: BASIC does not need line numbers, and hasn't for the last 30 years, or more. Unfortunately you are trashing a language that you actually know very little about.
Its a house of cards, really. Oracle on a single system doesn't scale much better (if even) than PostgreSQL on a single system. Oracle's cluster solution is nice, but the expense is crazy. Only fortune 500s and governments can waste that kind of money. I don't know of any "new" business that chooses Oracle.
Is the RDBMS that oracle customers want, or is the stuff that runs on that RDBMS, like Oracle EBS?

The US and the WEST in general remain the beacon of hope and freedom
Assange is clearly being arrested on trumped-up charges. This is nothing but a 100% unprovable case of he-said-she-said. Since when does Interpol become involved in such a case? Since when do we have a massive international man-hunt over something like that? This stinks to high-heaven and you know it.
And why now? Wikileaks has been around 2006, but it has not been until banks were threatened that it became such a BFD.
I thing the US and West would have more credibility if they acted more properly.

Yeah, that's important. Last time I was on vacation, I kept thinking: I wish I had another 1000 books to read. No way I could get by with one or two.
...so you change animal farming.
Yeah, sure. Good luck with that.
By the same reasoning: good luck with getting people to switch from a nice beef steak, to eating bugs.

I thought developer jobs were being offshored, and inshored, out of existence. Maybe they don't mean good jobs for US workers?
None of those movies really stretch the science *fiction* very far at all. And they were all pretty good movies.
I'm not surprised either. If you buy a new desktop, or laptop, you usually have no choice.
I see no advantage of win7 over xp. Most of the changes are cosmetic, and not helpful.
Considering that it's been about ten years since xp was released, win7 seems pathetic. Small wonder that apple has surpassed microsoft in market cap.

Specifically, what bad habits? I know BASIC, and Python, and I can tell you that Python has as many oddities as any other commonly used language.
Learn Python and you learn that whitespace is always significant, right?
In Python, variables can be changed in the background, without you explicitly changing them.
Python does not have records, or arrays, and "variables" in python are used in such an odd manner, that they hardly deserve to be called variables.
Should you really learn that "everything is an object?" Might not be a good mindset to have if you want to learn C later on.
Seems that every time BASIC gets mentioned on slashdot, everybody jumps to the conclusion that nothing has changed since GW-BASIC.
I was programming, professionally, with BASIC, in the early eighties. Never used a GOTO, or a line number, once.
Might also be worth mentioning that BASIC commands are also used in spreadsheets, and other applications.
Ruby has all the mindshare these days.
I think I've heard of Ruby. Wasn't that popular around 2005?
Seriously, all the mindshare? Really?

Millions of people in the West lead sexually promiscuous appalling lives
As do millions of Muslims, don't kid yourself.
As I understand it, some of Mohammad's many wives were as young as nine years old.
Also, as I understand it, Iran has more google searches for stuff like bestiality, than any other nation.
Also, as I understand, Muslim nations tend to unbelievable backwards, and brutal.
