(I felt bad about it when she asked why I didn't get the same phone) I think they're all getting better (3.5 Sense feels much better than 2.x Sense, btw) now, but like I said, you can get ROMs that don't have them at all.

The biggest concern is to not get any phone with a locked bootloader unless you already know the community has a working way around it. As you don't have to worry about that with your phone, you're ahead of the game :)

I could have easily picked a ROM without Sense as well, like MIUI or Cm7, etc.

I'm backing him 100% on that. Yup, he's qualified, he's fast, and he's good but it's just no fun to watch parents be assholes.

So where's the "I really want to do it" gene? My daughter is not as good a swimmer but she's highly coveted by her team because she really wants to be there. Borders Books' ebooks were powered by Kobo, but they weren't a huge name to the end user, I think. Before now their main competition, which they couldn't beat, was actually the Barnes & Noble Nook Color. It'll be interesting to see if they can differentiate themselves enough with this new self-branded tablet to get people to choose them over the Kindle and Nook lines. As it is, however, Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, Kobo, and Aldiko (yet another bookseller) all have reader apps on Android, as does Google itself. Since it's quite annoying to try to keep up with books stored in multiple competing flavors of EPUB and Adobe DRM, if they're not compelling, they're just going to get lost.

P.S. Don't even get me started on iBooks by Apple. That's going down the same proprietary reader path that Sony took. They probably have a huge following among people who already own their portable hardware, but they lock you into that hardware; they don't even have a reader for their own computers.

We forum moderators have already brought it to their attention long ago and they have begun asking for our feedback before uploading new builds to the Database. For the time being there are still bad builds in the Database and it is still recommended by the forum moderators to use our recommended builds in this thread. When all the kinks are worked out of the organizational process to select builds for the Database then this thread may go away.

There's a claim that we need a certain date in the month for all sysadmins to know to look for updates, but that's silly. Sysadmins should always be checking for vulnerabilities, and if they really can't be bothered to do it more than once a month they can set their own calendar -- but make the fixes available immediately to the rest of us.

Every CEO should be given an agreed goal, and their bonus works both ways. If they achieve it they win their bonus, if they lose they pay out. How much more effective would executives be under this system?

Some probably do have goal-based bonuses. However, I think in aggregate this could actually render executives less effective, because it renders them less flexible to look at long term issues in pursuit of short term gains.

Let's say you're CEO of a company that makes widgets. You get a bonus at the end of the year if you meet your target revenue. That's all good, except your factory is down the street from one of the Japanese reactors that's now in trouble. Do you still try to meet your goal, doing whatever you can to meet target? Or do you focus on long term issues like the health of your workers and moving your operations across the country?

Okay, in an extreme circumstance, most good people are going to say screw the bonus, this other stuff's important, but what about when the danger isn't looming as obviously? Like the guy being told that if he outsources a subassembly, he can announce 25 cents more per share in profit next quarter, when the danger is the company getting the contract and the experience may go directly to his customers in two years and start eating his market share, after he's shut down in-house production of that part and laid off the people with expertise in the area?

It was not cheap in comparison to any other media you could buy at the time, which may well have been a part of why so few people ever bought it.

I believe Zip discs were over $15 each for a long time. MD-Data would have probably sold for around the cost as the blank music ones, which was cheaper ($9-13?)
As MD was smaller, had higher capacity, and was more rugged, this should have been a slam dunk.

Yours is the comment I came in to write! I did see a picture of a portable MD Data drive plugged into a laptop when the format(s) was first introduced (there was another disc format they announced that was part pre-recorded and part blank, too, which at the time would have been interesting for games), and it was definitely before Zip disks really caught on. This would have been the format to beat, and I kept waiting for a drive to finally show up for consumers.

I used to wonder why they never marketed it widely, but now I think I've guessed: because the MD music format was already out, they might have been afraid that allowing a direct attachment to a computer would enable people to rip their music and record copies on other discs. That's exactly the kind of thinking Sony has used when it's shot itself in the foot time and time again, the only difference being this was before everyone started making MP3s.

p.s. I still have my MDS-101, but I only ever bought maybe 3 pre-recorded MDs before they stopped selling them, locally. How depressing.
