  1. Typical on House OKs Life Sentences For Hackers · · Score: 1, Interesting

    A typical knee-jerk reaction.

Any lawyers out there know if the ACLU or someone similar can get it repealed?

... the nasty b***ards are using the Adobe eBook format. So it's no good to many of us then, is it?

Adobe have no current plans to market a Linux version and lots of plans to sue the ass off of anyone who does... as Dmitri found out...

    Well, yes.

But they know Jupiter has an atmosphere which should burn up the probe and destroy anything on it.

A little bit risky, but if your choices are Europa or Jupiter, and you can't avoid hitting anything, you have to go with the main chance.

  4. Good or bad? on Courts Begin To Frown On Online Badmouthing · · Score: 3, Insightful
Surely this is not all bad?

If people are badmouthing a company and the company decides to take action, then you just have to make sure that you can prove what you're saying...

    How is this either

    1. a bad thing
    2. different to the current laws of libel (remember, it's not slander; it's written)

Think, people - it may be the only way to get some of these gripes to be provable.

If, on the other hand, you are genuinely offensively libeling(?) either a company or an individual in the company, don't they have rights to defend themselves?

As always, I think it comes down to how the laws are applied. And that's where I get really scared for my liberties...

  5. How long... on Bionic Eyes · · Score: 5, Insightful

"We are conducting preliminary tests on the ceramic detectors for biocompatibility, and they appear to be totally stable"
Hmmm... As a lifelong glasses/contacts wearer, I don't like the sound of the words 'preliminary' and 'appear' in this article. By the time they're actually ready, I bet I'll be long gone. A shame.
Long term testing needs to be done too; since the eyes deteriorate with age (which can adversely affect the results of current corrective surgery, such as LASIK where if you get it done too soon, you'll need glasses again by the time you're 35-40) I'd love to know what will happen to this technology.
Don't get me wrong; it's way cool. But these are my eyes, dammit!

  6. Hmm. on al Qaeda Hacks XP? · · Score: 1

So, you think al Qaeda *need* to put any more holes in any Microsoft product?

Sounds like preemptive marketing from Micro$oft to me... I can just see it:
"I'm sorry Ms Reno, it wasn't our fault, it was those evil towel-heads from al Qaeda who're to blame for our many security holes."

  7. Re:Dell Inspiron 7000 on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

Nope - I didn't miss that at all! I paid extra (at the time) to get an Inspiron 7000 with the *new* 15" screen. The 15.4" ones came out a little after I took delivery, and boy was I annoyed!

  8. Dell Inspiron 7000 on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

Now I've got an Inspiron 7000 - even older than the one you have! - and the hinges on mine have never gone... I've had it for nearly 3 years, and I use it every day. I've found the best way of dealing with the hinge issue is to tighten up the hinge screws regularly.
My real problem with it is that it is *so* fscking heavy to lug about every day! Other than that, its been a great little(!) machine.
