My guess is that they are afraid of what would happen if Social Security ran out of money and had to start calling in it's loans to the rest of the government.
The problem with the current US system is that there is no good way to form a new party. As soon as a person leaves one of the two established parties, they loose nearly all of their chances of being elected. This forces most people running for office to choose one party and stick with it, even when they no longer feel that the party is moving in the right direction. Since serious infighting within a party will likely give the other party an easy win in the next election, it all devolves into a game of chicken, with extreme elements threatening to tear the parties part if the entire party does not follow them.
So killing animals is wrong, even in a good cause? Ok, so i guess you're not going to kill fleas if they start living on your dog. Or lice living on your child. And curing you of those worms that have started living in your intestines is right out.
It's just a little itch, not a proper justification for killing all those defenseless creatures.
The problem is that there wasn't a balance of power in Europe back then. Germany had a large modern army, while France and the UK were still stuck in WW1.
If removing nuclear weapons from irrational leaders is the goal, then why just stick to a non-proliferation treaty? Have the security council declare nuclear weapons illegal and any country that has them should be automatically subject so severe sanctions.
So can The pirate bay now include the words:'If you access this site, you may not sue us or provide any information to anyone that would enable them to sue or prosecute us, and if you do provide this information you are liable for any damages we might incur as a result', and all of their legal problems would go away?
Why should an artist get more then people working in other areas. Should someone who sells a piece of land be forever entitled to a % of any new sales? Or even rents on buildings on that land? Or should a stock holder be entitled to dividends even after he has sold his stocks?

If you are taking that position, should grade school teach students that the earth is round? That there are other planets?
Why not just give them the fundementals so they can can go and studing things like that later when they can make an educated choice to do so?
Evolution is one of the basic things you have to learn once you start learning biology, so learning any 'general sciences' without it is going to be a problem.

Deterrent. I'm guessing other countries are less likely to sabotage you if you can threaten them with a nuke.

Let's say MS stock drops 99%. Sure the investors are going to be pissed. But will the company stop making a profit? Will it loose any assets?

Did these executives also give back their stocks and reduce their pay to 0? That would also be best for the company.
