okay, I'll bite. 'Organise' is the British spelling. 'Organize' is the US spelling. The Economist is a British magazine (they call themselves a newspaper).

So, you really just made yourself look like an idiot.

hmmm... flaming really *is* good for hangovers...

Well, they could put kiosks in various software stores that's updated regularly with the latest version; then they could burn on demand onto a pre-logo'd disc and also retail the support licensing right there.

That might work for folks who don't want to download the distro...

Well, it's not me, it's my dad, but he bought an Apple //c for his real-estate office in 1983 and still uses it to keep track of the rental properties he owns.

My wife and I figure that a fairly simple spreadsheet would probably do the trick these days, but he won't part with it. As he argues (and I can't find fault with it, really), it works, so why mess with it...

I'd have moved him to AppleWin long ago if I still had the bits and pieces I needed to transfer the disk images, but alas...

You probably already know this, but if you've still got your Marathon II or Infinity discs, and a little bit of patience, you can now play Marathon (II and up) using AlephOne; see bungie's AlephOne website or search out there for AlephOne SDL if you're interested in playing with it...

They've even got network play using TCP/IP working, and OpenGL is supported too.

There's also an add-on you can get that's a re-do of the M1 levels, and they're fixing up the engine to play those levels natively as well.

From what I understand, debit cards aren't covered by the same kind of credit protection (because they're not really) than actual personal-line credit cards do; even if they share the same logo.

Any thoughts on whether these cards were affected? I'd imagine the numbers all went through the same network...

This worked for me as well. I got surprisingly little sh*t from them. When asked why, I just said 'Cable', and the next thing I saw was "we're sorry to lose your business; thank you for using Earthlink".

the chat-window support option is the way to go.

  9. Recipe: Brown Rice on Geek Food: A Cookbook for the Technologically Inclined · · Score: 1

This came from a friend's mother. It's *very* simple, and goes good with meatloaf:

1 C white rice, long grain (*not* instant)
    1 can Campbel's Beef Consumme
1 can Campbel's French Onion Soup
    3/4 stick butter/margarine (6 TBSP)

Place all ingredients into 1 qt casserole. Toss lightly (just enough to wet rice a bit). Bake UNCOVERED at 350 for 1 hour.

Trust me, you can feed this to your parents or your company potluck. Other brands of soups might work, but they've got to be the regular size soup cans. Resist the temptation to muck with it while it's cooking. It only looks right when it's done, when all the onions have automagically come to the top.

I can also tell you that ours appeared there the day after our listing agreement was signed. We were able to let our agent know about a new listing before she even did her MLS run that day.

  11. realtor.com and MLS on Searching for Real Estate Using the 'Net? · · Score: 1

We have just bought a home in Ohio, and two years ago bought one in Michigan. In both cases, Realtor.com has been a very useful tool to us; it's tied to various MLS systems used all over, and I believe data is shared between those systems as well. It's been a very useful tool to get an idea what homes are available in a given area, what their price range is, and even provides an MLS number to give to your realtor if you should spot something that your agent didn't tell you about. There may still be some regions of the country that don't have a computerized MLS system, and in that case, it won't help you much. You should still use an agent, however, as they can often find FSBOs (For-Sale-By-Owner) that won't show up in that system. It was also useful to get more readable information about a home using the very messy and barely readable MLS printout our agent sent us, by punching in the numbers and seeing the homes in living color. Of course, there's still no substitute for actually going an looking at homes, but this makes for a great way to start. Finally, it's important to note that realtor.com is the official home of the National Association of Realtors (which is a real national organization), and as such is probably the most authoritative. Good luck!
