Has a girl getting uploaded to world net and then able to form bodies from nano-dust. Is only story I know of but my SF reading's a bit light since I became a parent.
Man, I'm just happy that I live in a time where the principles of the Enlightenment are (were?) taught in public schools and promoted in pop literature. Don't have to wonder if events in the world are the result of Gods and Daemons.
NY Times did a blind taste test of higher end vodkas and threw in a bottle of Smirnoff. Yup, it came out on top. 'Course, I've been drinking this, ever since I made the move up from Albersons' brand vodka. That stuff is paint thinner.
In the books, Bond asks for martinis to be stirred, no shaken but in the first movie, Connery flubbed the line, reversing it. Since he was asking for a less sophisticated drink, it made Bond seem to have a rough edge and they kept it in.
Just about any of the 'B' bourbons are pretty good: Bookers, Bakers, Basil Hayden. And Knob Creek is good to. Not a big fan of Maker's Mark (a little too sweet/vanilla for my tastes) but I do like Bulleit Bourbon (hey, another 'B' bourbon). And I don't really mind cheaper brands like Jim Beam and Ten High (old tennis shoe). Yeah, they're harsher but go really well with a spicy pizza or nachos. And if you're getting in to bourbon, don't pass by a chance to try Rye. Jim Beam Rye is pretty smooth.
I voted for McCain in 2000 primaries and, disgusted by dirty tricks Bush/Rove pulled, ended up voting for Nader. In Florida. In 2000. By 2004, was registered Independent and this time around, am registered Democrat. Sure, I don't agree with a lot of their issues but man, anything's better than this business cabal that's running the country into the ground. And I was really pulling for McCain last year, until I saw who he surrounded himself with; same old bunch of neo-con advisors. Meh.
Who knows, if the GOP implodes this time around, maybe a true conservative party will rise up, that does embrace small government, fiscal responsibility and a lessening of foreign entanglements. One can hope.
It's not the engineer's pay but their project funding. A lot of them would rather save $10k or $20k on new Macs for their department and spend it on other equipment or for time on some of our super computers. Part of their funding comes from gov't programs and customers and other part comes from selling their work to businesses, state gov'ts and NGO's. Sure, some orgs are flush and buy top line gear. Others are told they have a $2K cap on personal computing gear.
As for me paying them, heh, I'm just a contract tech monkey who gets to unpack and set up kit.
I have an old NuBus card in my Quadra 650 that has special AT&T DSP chips on it, made just for Photoshop acceleration (mostly Blur, I think). I think it was SuperMac or RAdius. Been a long time since I cracked case on that machine.
We had some Apple reps at our company last month, pitching their security stuff (File Vault). When they asked for questions, just about everyone said they wanted a mini-tower in the $1200-$1800 range with minimum 3 pci-e slots and graphic card options. We have a lot of engineers who don't need an 8 core machine with 16GB RAM (and a $3000+ price tag). If they do come out with such a beast, we'll be picking up a metric butt load of 'em.
Heh. I actually do own a slide rule. Friend of mine, his dad was an engineer at Honeywell, back in the '70's. I was always messing with it when over at their house. Once the new calculators came out, he gave it to me. Pretty cool. Need to dig it out, figure it out, and then show daughter how it works.

There Will Be Dragons by John Ringo?
If you're cool enough, maybe someone will code your personality into an online game?

Except for the Time Cube.
I thought AlGor was one of those monsters that attacked Tokyo but was defeated by Godzilla in a giant flying battleship?
Heh. I'm a fan of Columbia Valley rieslings. Is nice knowing I'll never pay more than $12/bottle.

Hey, if someone has some pudding pops, circa 1983, stashed away, well, slap a Depends on me and call me Grampa!

Obligatory: I like my women like my scotch; 12 years old and mixed up with coke.
I'm in a glass box of emotion!
I thought that was Barry Goldwater?

Just blow the dust off the bottle of scotch and you'll soon have a good repair.

Nope, was a Russian, of course. Chekov probably mentioned it to Sulu at some point.
And your patent is where? Even Clarke credited some Russian guy with the idea from early 1900's (I think).
First, we need to move Sri Lanka so that it straddles the equator.
..manufactured girl friends that really are interested in gaming, the details of video cards and beer...
Still not as cool as the launch of an Orion.
