Nutjob or no nutjob, people are in charge and running those countries because they love power. They like having control over everyone
Did you ever think that the rest of the world looks at Americans this same way? Your country is run by a Plutocracy that has selfish motivations to convince you of things... many things, this 'rogue states under the control of evil-power-mongers' is one of them. It is like you Americans never woke up from McCarthyism. It is alive and well, and specifically cultivated occassionaly to whip the public paranoia and hate up in order to support American Imperialism (see: your 'foreign affairs policies').
Id suggest you wake up and smell the coffee on this one - and think about what you are saying - the rest of the world is watching the United States VERY SPECIFICALLY break an international treaty that has managed to keep us from nuclear war for 25 years.... unprovoked, under the guise of 'defence' and in spite of the objections of the rest of the world (see: China, Russia, Europe - even Canada (with our clueless-Yankee-loving policies) are not supporting the idea.
NOW: WHO DO YOU THINK IS A "ROGUE STATE RUN BY NUTJOBS WHO LOVE POWER?
I can see only one country acting this way - and justifying it in the usual "but where Americans, and we are Good(tm) people, and everyone else is not as smart/honourable/wise/courageous/brave/altruistic as we are - *they* cant do this!"
What do you think would be the reaction, by the rest of the world, if a newly elected government came to power and promised the world they would be building up arms of this nature and that "that ultimately it is america that will decide".
Give me a break...
If any of these rogue countries like Iraq or Afghanistan or North Korea ever did get the balls to launch a nuclear missile at us, they have to know that their life is over. Their power is gone. There is nothing they can do to save themselves at that point. For these leaders that thrive off power,
Oh, BTW, Mutual Assured Destruction gaurantees that we are *ALL* screwed if *ANYONE* launches a nuke, not just your McCarthy inspired evil-du-jour. What America is doing is trying to unsettle that balance. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Your whole post is Rambo-style American Ego. Give me a goddamned break - who modded this troll up as +4 insightfull? I bet I can guess where these 'modders' live....
Please, if you are American, stop this war-mongering of your government. We dont need another Arms Race, no one except the Military Industrial Complex.
If, under some circumstance, someone proposed this to be a 'method to disarm all' and put it in the control of the UN, to protect *EVERY* country - the *whole* world - I might see it differently. But as it stands now, it is a very arrogant move of posturing by an arrogant state. If simple defence was the only purpose, and the US Gov. only wanted protection, than you would see this being approached in a much different fashion.
Outside of pork-barreling for the Plutocrats that already run the country, I cannot (inspite of my best paranoia-induced dillusions) imagine What The Fuck They Are Thinking. We have had a good lenght of peace, why stir the pot?
...and dont give me any of this 'rogue state' crap - these other states are simply the ones with nuts to stand up to American Imerialism. This, to them, is being a 'rogue' state.
Im just beside myself at the massive stupidity of the whole idea... My vote is that the rest of the world declare USofA a 'rogue state' and collectively we enforce sanctions.
Freedom can only exist with capitalism. Capitalism is simply free people voluntarily exchanging goods and services
Capitalism hinges on the control of capital, which we all use & need to work, in the control of a few. Capitalism, allows those few to weild that capital without any social responsibility. Without any conscience.
. Abuses such as the DMCA are not failures of capitalism, they are failures of government
The DMCA is what happens when your government is subverted by Free-Market Capitalists. In a sense, it is a failure of government, but it is an inevitable one when Capitalists are permitted to corrupt and direct your government (See: Plutocracy) - the DMCA is a what happens when your Capitalists (Burgoise) codify their desired legislation in order to extract more profit from people. Americans are just starting to see what it means to be oppressed (the last 50 years) - instead of being suppressed by Kings and Courts in a Feudal state, or Dictators and Generals in a Fascist State, America is being oppressed by Presidents and CEOs in a Plutocratic state.

lasts seven days with no valid explanation really starts to make you think about.Net
At least it is not my families 7 years of financial data, or the copies of my child's baby-pictures - or my presentation that I needed for a job-interview. We dont have to tell MS that distributed resources increases fault tolerance. When you devise a massive system, with a single point of failure (M$.Net) you are going to burn - and burn big-time. If.NET services were distributed to many 'equal' computers (think the internet as it is structured today) than we can withstand the loss of one machine, in the M$ vision of the future many-many-many services and machines rely on their.NET systems. Imagine if TCP/IP had to 'ping' authorize.big-toll-gate.com's 'license' server in order to start - now imagine they go down....
This may not be a surprise to any one on/.; but what happens when Passport crashes for a week and no one is able to pay bills or maybe Office.NET file storage site burns down and takes millions of people's family photos (yes I know about off-site backups).
The point is simple - you cannot build a reliable system with such a glaring single-point-of-failure. Downtime happens - and as this MSMessenger event shows us -.NET has serious potential for peril. I hope all the PHBs and DoJ are paying attention...
Publishers are still needed, partly for doing publicity and such to promote the book for more sales, but mostly because most readers are accustomed to having publishers act as the gatekeepers, the arbiters of quality--if something has been pro-published, they know that it's more likely to be worth reading.
By your argument the last Daniel Steel book would have been Shakespeare. I disagree. Publishers only really serve one useful purpose (in a world of digital media and zero-cost copying) and that is editing. Even that could be remedied by an Editors Union... publishers then become completely unnecessary. The 'quality' assurance should and can be very competently done by librarians, scholars and critics. THEY are even better at it because they can be assumed to be impartial (unlike the 'sony-movie-reviewer' scenario and other corruption), but trusting a publisher to tell you what is quality is ridiculous. Thats like listening to a wolf on how to tend your sheep-farm. Lets remember: Capitalists (Publishers) are interested in Profit (money) not Enlightenment (good books).
..and on the function of 'publicity' - it is useless trash. Publicity == advertising == marketing == garbage. If you let appearances on 'good morning today' influence your book reading Id suggest you may want to find a more honourable source of direction (to put it mildly). If a book is significantly important, such that you want to read it, you will hear about it through other means of critical reporting, maybe a fansite (for Sci-Fi) or a Trade Union (for manuals/technical analysis) or anywhere else.
In a world without publishers to moderate product based on 'market-demand' just imagine the array of new and compelling works that would be created. This device could liberate artists from publishers, and the public from Publisher controlled Pap-O-Matic that sells millions of 'lowest-common-denominator' trash every year because they can do 'publicity' and 'gatekeeping'.
Of course, the problem is that a lot of authors' contracts specify that the rights to shop their books to other publishers revert to them when the books go "out of print."
Maybe some person would be able to setup these units in public spaces as complete alternatives to book stores. You could make a VAST array of printed material available on one of these - what do you want the bookstore for? Im thinking about destroying publishing houses all together... authors could simply share a royalty with the "Insta-Book Kiosk" owner. Millions of zines, comics, magazines, books, guttenburg texts with zero incremental costs for increased volumes - you would be able to skip all your traditional 'big publishing' houses at first and just sell 'niche' material (just an absolutly VAST array of it) - and then invite authors to make their back-catalogues available...
Ill bet one, or a collection of PUBLISHERS buy up this company in order to stear it to a 'reasonable and appropriate' usage... and avoid your described scenario all together.
Students go to school so that they can learn how to get around in their world - and right or wrong, this is a world with jobs requiring Microsoft expertise.

Public education teaches ideas, ideals, concepts and reasoning. Broad based learning to enlighten people. Life is not about the worthless-corporate-work-world. DO NOT ACCEPT OTHERWISE. And dammit dont try and teach children that.

I have no interest in giving M$ any information about me or my computer - now or ever. I will not run WinXP or anything else Windows on the internet, i just cant trust that they havent trojaned all (some/most/whatever) of the applications.

Not for security it doesn't. Security is a matter of knowing where every program on the machine came from, and knowing that no uncertified programs have even been run on the machine. It is solely a matter of trust...
Spoken from the POV of the rule-rigid. Symanticly you are flat-wrong. Why would you trust your Oracle ODBC driver or copy of winsock.dll more or less than Dnet? Dnet is as known and understood as either Oracle or M$ wares - what makes you sure there isnt some trojan code on one of your 'certified' binaries? Give me a break, Dnet only does what it reports - as much as anything else - and there is no reason to think-otherwise. Your argument would have made sense in a universe where RC5 was Sub7 - in this one, the reality is, it is not.
BTW, what 'certified' you to be the All Knowing Sage of Securtiy? Your whole post is really in left field - do you have an MBA?
To fully recover from a compromise, you'd have to replace them all. Would probably be cheaper to just scrap the equipment and buy new stuff
Are you on drugs? A troll? These were commonly-available, general use computers - with accessible cases and (*gasp*) disk drives - do you think this is the control-room for a nuclear missle or a office computer? Your argument would have made sense barely in the former installation.
