This is a rather personal attack...but the last remark was at best childish. Stick with the issues. I don't believe Mundie/Microsoft made any such direct remarks about Linus...
I completely disagree. Humanity has cloaked itself in a thick layer of Bullshit and PR speak. This is cased by the palm-pusher corporate types who seek to maintain a fine 'artificially constructed' reality that is suitable to their Marketing Plan(TM).
I say fuck it all - if Mundie is a jackass - I say we openly SAY IT! This is reality - not a fucking Game Show.
Mundie is really just a talking head - paid for his white teeth and quick wit - why should some dishonest puppet be given respect? Because of his Job Title? I would assert that Mr. Mundie has done nothing to earn our respect (in spite of his impressive jobtitle - which i say is irrelevant). Mr. Mundie is a blatant liar and a despicable person, his very character is soiled by this display of shallowness and greed.
The people cited in Linus' email are people deserving of respect - they have made contributions to humanity, and by most accounts did so with passion and vigour. Mr. Mundie is a lap-dog, deserving of only ire and loathing.
This is not flaimbait. I am suggesting that people start re-evaluating who is regarded well in public - lets re-asses how we choose our 'leaders' - and most certainly; lets call a spade a spade.
What the hell are you talking about? Who said anything about this group 'having pirated software'? It may or may not be true - but it is most certainly not relevant.
I would much have the FREEDOM to choose whether I give back to the community or not. (that's also why you see 99% of big businesses using BSD licensed code on their systems)
Without rehashing the BSD vs GPL argument (which i fall squarely on the side of GPL) - people use the GPL so they can share and protect themselves from being used - BSD advocates dont mind how their (excellent) work is used. GPL coders are interested in building a 'dynamic of sharing' which is proving to be very powerful.. where I am want to share because it is Right and symbiotic.
People that get in trouble for violating a standard EULA IE: pirating software, are "fucking the man, getting back what they deserve from the companies". But companies that violate the GPL should be attacked with lawyers and forced to give out the source.*
This is a simple 'tongue-in-cheek' solution of turning the tables on someone - use their own weapons against them so-to-speak. I am very disappointed at the present state of Corporate Domination of All Things(TM), IP Law, Plutocratic Western Governments, purposefully overcomplicated legal system (etc etc)... that I think it is a fine idea to show the errors of a system by forcing it to abide by its own rules.
you want to be taken seriously in the real world
Who proposes to be taken seriously - by whom and in who's definition of 'the real world'. let me tell you: I am very displeased at what some assholes feel is the 'real world' - let me also assure you that my 'real world' is one devoid of exploitation via economics... i have little motivation to whore my life, ideals and my work for money grubbing corporate lap-dogs. I enjoy my freedom too much to give my mind over to your 'real world'.
If someone else's license is violated (IE: RIAA,Microsoft, insert a large company here) they deserve just as much justice as when the GPL/GNU license is violated.
Just like Murder laws - there is a matter of purpose and intent. Killing a person in accident is (at worst) manslaughter - killing someone in cold-blood is 1st degree (etc). It matters VERY much who is doing WHAT and for WHAT PURPOSE. What you have hear is a known anti-social IP hording Corporation (sony) taking advantage** of the goodwill of GPL coders in order to take only for themselves, flatly violating the intent of the GPL and using it to horde cash for themselves...

, it was just posted 2 days ago (5/1/01). My guess is that they'll release the source real soon now, but it probably wasn't quite ready for prime time just yet.
Although I understand your point - maybe they want to clean up some poor code or fix variable names (from bobabc to loop_count etc) or add documentation. BUT it is a dangerous precedent to allow someone to 'hold off' on their source for any time at all - who's to say how long they should be allowed to wait? What is a 'reasonable' length? 1 day? 1 week? 1 year? If the source/binary versions are not being made available *AT THE SAME TIME* then it is a random (interpreted) amount of time before the former is released - who gets to decide?
The amount of 'reasonable' time will only increase - each new case sets a precedent where others can last as long as they want less than T; anything more would have to ask for a special 'extension' (from The Community) - thus setting a new 'reasonably interpreted time' as T+T1.
This is the way concepts get screwed with over time - exceptions are made until the original intent has been subverted by 'special acceptable cases'... eventually everyone will feel their case is similar enough to be a 'special acceptable case' and you will never see mod sources available with binaries - and GPL code will be used as the basis for proprietary products - and the code only available until their market advantage is over (by technical attrition) or until they extend the new source further (making the old source NFG without their *new* mods).
I suggest 'we' *NEVER* accept anything less than simultaneous releases of binaries and sources.
I understand wanting 'benefit of the doubt' - but this introduces ambiguity... and that is not a 'fail safe' condition. And given the whoreing nature of sony I suggest the coders involved (in writing this emulator) be very carefull about who their dealing with (Remember: "we'll block them at their routers; we'll block them at their ISP; we'll block them at their Computers etc")
Does that apply to *any* employee of the company (i.e. would the guy at the assembly line or the lady in the cafeteria be considered an "agent" as much as a VP or CEO), or does the person have to carry some weight within the company?
In Canada if you 'reasonably consider' this person to be acting on behalf on his employer (and he asserts it himself) than he is. So basically if you speak with the LunchLady about GPL it is not 'reasonable' - speaking to a developer who does understand software licenses then yes it is 'reasonable' for you to feel his is an agent of his employer - if he asserts he is ("go ahead and try and sue us") - then he certainly is.

This is a terribly slippery slope to a point where a person may not be officially sanctioned to speak freely. This is much different from the 'shouting fire in a movie theater' ban on 'free speach' that is accepted (maybe wrongly) as being a fair restriction to free speach - and drawing the legality based on the speaker, his motivation, his status, and probably (and very sadly) his bankbook.

No you misunderstand, its shallow and unsustainable. USofA is a young country, never experienced a modern domestic war and doesnt have the balance of thousands of years of history. You say 'successful and powerful' and the rest of the world thinks 'egotistic and immature'. Also, youve just given a text-book example of why Im correct.
Congratulations on discovering what socialist countries
THe things you describe have nothing to do with public ownership of capital or from the 'from each according to ability; to each according to need' credo. What you have is an artifact of a country trying desperatly to maintain soverignty in a capitalist world where innovations are bought up and used to only extract profit (not help humanity) and where IP Laws (bought by capitalist to control human thought/ideas/speach (read: evil)) prohibit the common use of innovation so all people can benefit.
THE PROBLEMS you describe are created by CAPITALISM!!! The world did very well before the capitalist domination of all ideas - the results of research were shared for the good of all people. Not just a few who sell their humanity and participate ruthlessly in an alien world...
One of the major reasons you may be seeing this legislation is to save $$$. When presented with the options of health care versus supporting multinationals like M$ and Oracle. The IMF is demanding certain 'savings' and some wise member of the Argentinian Government has probably seen the light through the proprietary software vendors lies.
The Argentinian people are currently battling proposed 'solutions' to the Argentinian economic 'troubles'. There have been massive protests in Argentina to protect their civil services.
Have a look here for a brief about what is going on in Argentina.
This legislation has little to do with Free Software and alot more to do with the priorities of a soverign nation.
yes - smaller government, but bigger business to replace the services. Great idea, sell your ownership for an opportunity at being a customer. Privatization. Great idea. Sheesh.

Exactly why you wont see this law in the gloriously corrupt and bankrupt USA. The Plutocrats in Washington would never pass a law like this - because they are taking kickbacks from the SW industry to prevent their representation of the best interests of the people.
the goal of maximizing revenue and minimizing costs. They had a goal of becoming famous.
In a more enlightened culture this would be the correct mode of operation. Maximizing revenue is NOT a 'honourable' and 'noble' goal. It makes people rich - but does it make people wealthy? No.
Remember Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs. Being 'famous' is equivelent to being respected by ones peers*, a much more honourable goal than simply stuffing your driveway full of SUVs and gold faucets for your sinks.
So, in the end, VCs are mindless, childish twits hell bent on chasing the 'dreams' sold to them by their McLives advertised for $1.299,00 at the McHappyShoppingCenter.

ad infinitum on/., the console business is based on the idea of losing money (or only breaking even) on the console
If emachines can sell a $399 computer - why cant TuxBox (or indrema) build a $299-$350 console? Consoles save a few bits, but require higher end pcs in other cases... it may be possible.
Im sure the 'sold at a loss' idea serves the console makers well when helping to convince people their "new consoles are the latest high-tech-turbo-extra-super-dooper gaming rig' possible - its so terrific; we sell it at a loss!" With the economies of scale, the specialized fabs and controlled/single-purpose manufacturing systems - why does the PS2 have to cost more than $299? I can understand when they are running them out at $129 (even then every box sold has less fixed costs...) but why isnt anyone willing to challenge this dogma?
Who knows of the Project that is working on a Linux based (as TiVo) GPL style PC based TiVo killer?
I imagine that somewhere there is a project being developed, that would turn my tuner-card equipped PC into a commercial skipping, menu driven, time shifting, dream machine. I imagine being able to fire up the TV out on a decent video card, and watch every episode of the Simpsons broadcast (recalled from the HD). This project would gather its TV listings from ?????? (user input to record certain segments). It would have two major items:1) Record New "Time Slots" (or use a pre-configed listing gathered from ????) to gather new programs; 2) Present a menu of stored programs for viewing.
I know this sounds almost exactly like TiVo - but TiVo is not gratis nor libre. The list of investors in another post (CBS, AOL-Time Warner, Comcast, Liberty Media, Discovery communications, Showtime Networks, Disney, and NBC) assures me that TiVo's intention is not to operate on behalf of the desires of the users; its service will always be tempered by the wishes of these investors.
Now - who has the link to this project? I am sure im not the only one to think a Libre/Gratis PC cum TiVo is an excellent liberator.

it's good to see positive coverage of hackers/hacker culture
You consider this positive? The desire to be a Capitalist 'Success'? I think Hackers probably have allot of good character traits that arent necessarily described by a Capitalist/Puritan Work Ethic(TM) and a desire for 2 SUVs and a Litter of Children (for photos on your desk for your co-workers to see how much of a family-person you are (FYI: Family Values(TM)==Good Person)).
Hackers are also giving, sharing, inquisitive, open, honest and tolerant.
Saying "became a devout follower of motivational speaker Anthony Robbins. && Shoupe traded in his beat-up 1985 Honda, the one with duct tape on the fender, for a black BMW." Does not scream 'successful person' to me; it sounds like simple, ignorant, shallow twit with a poor sense of self-worth, misguided values and an unhealthy world-view.

I am interested in seeing 2600 && Hackers being portrayed well in the media. Im Canadian and dont read the Washington Post, I dont know its general tone (liberal/conservative) but I'd say this article was written as a purposefully to show 2600 && Hackers in a good light - very specifically. If I wanted to portray 2600 && Hackers as Good People(TM); I would write an article almost exactly like this one. It is a little eerie - did Ariana Eunjung Cha also write the "PS2 as Arms in Iraq" propaganda schtick? The motivation, target audience and 'benefiting party' are admittedly very different. It couldnt be more obvious that this was written to influence - as opposed to being neutral/informational newsreporting. *OR* maybe Ariana is simply sympathetic to the 'cause'?

Make no mistake Canadian Nationalism does exist, but it is mostly a defense mechanism against the "American Ego".
Canada is not a 'melting pot' but a 'Mosaic' of i18n culture - Canada ends up being a country of "International Citizens", and we like that very much, but like the rest of the world we too dispise USofAmerican policy/politics/culture for their hubris, imperialism and 'capitalist crusades' and other obvious faults, so you'll find that a Canadian's 'nationalism' is mostly an effort to display disgust at USians... its realy very weird... but it works.
A common joke in Canada is something like: "Q) what is Canada's most common national trait? A) Were not fucking Americans!" That may not be it exactly, but i think that it conveys the idea.

Here is another interesting article
the need for smaller government
yes - smaller government, but bigger business to replace the services. Great idea, sell your ownership for an opportunity at being a customer. Privatization. Great idea. Sheesh.
Sounds a bit communist to me
RUN! RUN! The government is organizing to do something for its citizens - RUN RUN!!!!!!!!! But we wont be able to exploit people/community/environment for profit if the godless-communists take control! RUN!
Get a clue - no wonder the US is the most hated country in the world - they hate their own government and abhor any initiative to work on behalf of its people.
Can you imagine the damage that would cause to the software industry
Exactly why you wont see this law in the gloriously corrupt and bankrupt USA. The Plutocrats in Washington would never pass a law like this - because they are taking kickbacks from the SW industry to prevent their representation of the best interests of the people.
Fuck the SW 'industry' - this is about citizens.
the goal of maximizing revenue and minimizing costs.
Fuck VCs (and the rest of the unsustainable-economy advocates.)
*Except in the US Capitalist-Consumer 'la-la-land' where even fame has become a product.
comrades selling open-source software
Its really nice that they are trying to pull this "opensource==godless communism" crap - very subtle; very nice. Simply by saying "comrades" in America you rake up this whole 'evil-godless-communist' rabble in the mindless sheeple. Wonderfull how the author pulls this simple word-association trick... this will pre-dispose conditioned sheeple to react negatively to 'open source'. This is what happens with over-loaded words are hyped by the media to produce mass response - clear, measurable, specific response. effective.
Why cant America give up McCarthy-ism?
Sorry - slightly offtopic, my politics are aligned to the left - so I have become a little sensitive/aware of these types of manipulations.
ad infinitum on /., the console business is based on the idea of losing money (or only breaking even) on the console
Leaving at 5:30 in morning... wish me luck!
But its gonna be scary as hell to see where this goes
.sig; I leave tomorrow morning.
Have you ever read 1984? Ferenheit451? Brave New World? Tireless 'mind/masses control' tales - never more poignant or insightfull than today.

Im sorry - but considering the usual 'Group Think' that goes on here at
Were almost all paranoid, delusional raving morons - incapable of understanding whats *REALLY* going on'
Dvork and everyone else in the media are morons, pawns and liars - incapable of understanding whats *REALLY* going on'.
Im really finding all this hard to believe - I know Im not the only one who believes that IP laws are out of control. I see the ever tightening control of IP as a very serious threat to the future, its offensive to a free people - is Dvork an idiot or a tool?
Instead, it taught him about job hunting, stock options and business plans."
it's about working hard and getting ahead
it's good to see positive coverage of hackers/hacker culture
Then, with a shake of his gray-streaked ponytail, he disappeared into the crowd He is hip and mysterious.
My mom thought I was playing Sesame Street Grover's ABC, but instead I was hacking into the Chinese government Give me a fucking break.
He's going to make some company really happy someday!!!!!!!!! Yes, thats good - lets all grow up to make 'companies happy'. It used to be 'good wife' or 'good husband', which isnt perfect but still a hell of allot better than that ideal.
"bring down the server computers for DoubleClick" && "DoubleClick officials said they had been a victim of break-ins that "minimally disrupted" its services Twist ending - elusive and poignant - I like it. Excellent work.
Strange.
Meanwhile, we're expected to be the policemen, firefighters, and EMTs of the world
WOWOW Wait just a moment - DONT EVERY CONFUSE THE PURPOSE AND ACTIONS of the US MILITARY. You are not "expected" to be these things (and your frantly not), but you tell yourselves this is the motivation (it is not). The US Military is an imperialist force operating on behalf of the Plutocrats who run Washington.
Trust me when I tell you that the rest of the world is MUCH happier when the US military stays home. You seem to be buying into the Propaganda that tells you how noble and altruistic your military actions are... you'd be very VERY wrong.
