Who cares if it would've been unpopular?! That's what business is all about. That's what capitalism is all about: getting a limited monopoly from the government (a patent) in order to restrict the trade of your competitors in reward for a brilliant insight or idea. That's what patents are for. They're not something you play with in kindergarten. They're not like shuffleboard or parchesi. They're important stuff.

Either you are +1 Funny (Sarcastic), or -1 Troll.

Surely your not proposing that 'profit motive' is the only important factor in life? Maybe we should eliminate patents all together just to give Capatalists a little shake up - the system is not working - and what you propose is *MORE* corporate-power-hording.

Suggestion to Symantec: Give your Patent to the FSF. Release the patent GPL.

My advice to you: Re-evaluate your priorities, you'll be dead soon.. and no one likes a greedy, selfish, myopic jackass... you cant *buy* wisdom, peace or contentment - re-adjust your life-goals.. help re-adjust the goals of your country.

Apple can no longer keep MacOS current and powerful - they saw themselves as quickly becoming the odd man out in the coming Linux jihad against M$ and decided they needed to align themselves with what will likely be the 'winner' 15 years from now.

I am not slighting the tech behind BSD - I am certain that the BSD License was the reason OSX has co-opted the BSD code.

Alot of people will say "but this is a win/win situation". What I would like to stress is that BSD is enabling Apple to exploit the 'grunt' coding done by thousands of BSD hackers - offering them a significant subsidy. OSX is the GUI, API and Object Model. BSD/Mach is the foundation.

I love Apple's hardware (who wouldnt kill for one of those Cube's), and I do like the appearance of their new GUI features (for their uber-coolness) - But I am not ready to accept that Apple isnt completely operating in their own best interests.

I think IBM is a better example of someone who 'gets it'. Apple is hoping to rape BSD to sell hardware.

    Its a matter of motivation.

both of these are basically untrue - socialists arent 'lazy'. Looking for a 'free ride'. Dont be so paranoid. You are not claiming that the improvement in the standard of living for the last 100 years is a simple product of 'Capitalism'? Capitalism is a mere market construct - it is artificial. It has been chosen. There are other systems. Some have more reasonable long-term prospects for success (read: Communism). I would suggest it is Science, Culture and Knowledge. Humanity has the good fortune of experiencing a massive growth in the three afore mentioned facets of culture - the same would have happened if 'we' were not ruthless corporate whores... there is no proof of the two being absolutely related. I would guess that Americans perceive there present 'power' as a testament to the 'rightchiousness' of Capitalism, that it is the 'best system - just look at how terrific we are'.

I would counter that America has the good fortune of being living on a previously un-exploited landmass and never having to fight a modern domestic war. America may be the 'wealthiest' nation - but it also enjoys *ALOT* of major social problems: Puritanism, Intolerance, Religious Zealotry, Legislated Morals, Crime, Cultural Myopia, Racism, Corruption, Consumerism and Apathy.
