My understanding from the press releases and info on Be-related news sites is that the iToaster will work with any ISP, and will be configured for the user's ISP before shipping. I don't know how the user would change the settings if they wanted to change ISPs after recieving the product.

BeGTK was started at least in part to make a GIMP port possible/easier It was axed because of the existance of "another project" no details given, no code released (although by that point they had a GTK based applet running).

Presumably this other project is the EventLoop port and I would assume that they ARE porting GTK and that they were making enough progress that theBeGTK port was redundant. This is of course 100% speculation on my part ;)

How would "M$ Terrorist [TM]" differ from any general purpose encryption product? I certainly can't think of any features that would be useful ONLY to spies, terrorists, mafioso and child molestors.

I DO NOT vote for people to "uphold morals and values" there is nothing worse than some polititian telling people what there morals should be. The last thing I wasnt is some ultra-right Christian Coalition type telling me what I can or can not access on the net: they want to not only filter porn, but sex-education, birth control, left wing political action groups, gay youth support groups and anything else doesn't fit their pseudo-morality. Unfortunatley as a "community" grows it changes, looses focus, and becomes something bigger and wider than before. Just look at how the Net has changed in the last 5 years. I was among the first to get on the net after it was opened to commercial exploitation (i.e pay for access) For instance people not from .edu addresses were looked on as worse than idiots whose opinions were worthless. As more and more people came on line, SLIP &PPP became available and supported by ISPs, the WWW exploded, changing everything out of all recognition. There are few remnants of the previous "culture" or "community" left. The same will happen (but on a smaller scale) if linux really catches on and gains some main-stream acceptance. Unfortunately there is not much you can do about it, just accept it as part of the price of success.

My personal experience with SMP linux was not so good, the performance boost wasn't as great as I would have thought and the systems were about as stable as Window$ (crashing 2 or 3 times a week) But this was 2.0, 2.1 so maybe the 2.2 kernels do a better job now.

Right or wrong the average user is happier with a big company name behind an OS, one who will support the product (yes I know Linux does have great de-facto support, but the target user won't know this or even know the right questions to ask) and provide apps for it.
