NASA IS publicly owned... its payed for by US citizens tax dollars (and money that Reagan borrowed in the 80s for shiny space weapons) government regulations have NOTHING to do with the lack of (operational) provate launch programs, this has alot more to do with the 100s millions/billions it takes in infrastucture, research and development necessary to build a succesful launch capability (im talking large payloads to geosynch orbit not 50lbs to LEO)

What makes you think MICROS~1 is going the way of the Dodo? They just posted record profits. Don't delude your self into think that becuase Linux is chipping away at the low-end server market that linux/OSS will sweep them aside. Its like the PFJ in Monty Pythons Life Of Brian dreaming of world domination in the next 5 years.

If the DOJ keeps the pressure on MICROS~1 and they actually have to compete with people instead of crushing them before they can even get a toe hold, maybe 5 or 10 years from now they'll be a player in a market with multiple choices, rather than the abusive monopoly they are now.

Whats different about Be is that they have a technicaly excellent OS that is powerful and easy for the average user to use. They basically have the best desktop OS there is, better than Windows, Mac, and yes a better desktop OS than Linux. If they are allowed to compete on the merits of their product they will survive linux, OSS, and MICROS~1 not withstanding.

The bottom line is that BeOS is just too good to go away.

  8. Stock Price on Be Inc. IPO launched · · Score: 2

The IPO was for 6 million shares at $6 per.
    Be therefore makes $6 x 6,000,000 = $36,000,000
they get this money from the underwriter, and it is the underwriter then turns around and sells those 6 million shares on the market and it is they who make money if they can sell those shares at more than $6.

If you add in Intel's $25,000,000, be has $61,000,000 on hand. Given that they've spent a total of $56,000,000 since 1990 they will be around for a long time to come which is great news for us Be fans (sorry OSS types but BeOS is here to stay)

The bottom line is that BeOS is just too good to go away.

  9. Good Idea on Amiga Technology Brief · · Score: 1

An open source project to make a BeOS-like OS would be cool. Start with a blank sheet, and design the OS from the start to use lightweight threads for everything, to be SMP friendly, have extremely low media latency, easy to use native GUI, etc etc, as opposed to adding these things at a later date! Of course Be has already done a fantastic job of implementing these ideas, but for some reason they get very little respect around here.

If the OSS zealots are really correct and most future software will be developed under the OSS model it'll be great to have some (more modern) alternatives to unix-like OS. Nothing wrong with unix of course, its longevity speaks for its self, but its not the ONLY way to make a good OS.

Now that linux has woken people up to the idea of alternatives to windows, BeOS's ease of use and dead simple install put it in a great position to to appeal to Windows refugees. As a computer geek I learnt alot (and enjoyed) the challenges of installing & using linux( i started with linux back in 0.9.18 with a slackware install) but even today with much better installs & desktops available, your average user doesn't have (or want to have) the skills needed to properly use linux.

Although BeOS makes a great general purpose desktop OS, their 'Media OS' strategy is a good one: ports of products such as Bryce 4 & Cinema 4D as well as the various professional A/V mixing & editing tools provide Be with a toehold that will (hopefully) keep their head above financial water long enough for more general user type apps to mature (and these are coming along nicely)

The bottome line is that the BeOS is just too good to go away no matter what happens to BE, Inc.
