....To get them web-able would mean I could find a usable home for them....
But I get the impression that what is referred to as old here is system produced 5 -7 years ago.
Hell I'm running off an overclocked to just over 500Mhz box right now using Ubuntu. Its my main internet system. It does just fine.
Having been screwed badly by the computer industry during the commodore fall and its thieving aftermath I haven't found a good enough reason to upgrade to the latest and greatest but rather wait for perfectly good hardware to be tossed out. I'll make smaller purchases in fixing or upgrading some tossed out systems but that's not very often. Getting to be just DVD R/W drives anymore. And that is so I can run live Linux CDs such as Dynebolic.
But this doesn't work for the older systems.
So to me old system fall in the category of 486's to Pentium I, and I have quite a few of those that will either make it into next years Decatur High free electronics recycling mine (yes, electronic based hardware has more mineral value in it than its weight in raw dirt based ore and such... And to think some places want to charge you to recycle) or I'll find an easy way to make them useful again which is the preferred method even with recyclers.
So if the software industry got back to lean and mean OSs and small but very usable internet applications and put together a package that could be test run via CD (or floppy/cd combo for those old system that just can't boot from CD) there could possible be an extension to the usable life of systems that otherwise make it to the landfill or recycling mine.
I'd been hoping that AROS would fit here but unless someone take on dev for old 486 systems, its not going to happen.
Anyone know of any such a package easy to test on old systems (live cd or floppy/cd bootable)?
A question to ask: Does porn help promote AIDS with viewers or help to demote it?
Perhaps there is an age of threshold but that is something that should be determined by the current living environment.
So what is an indicator of that threshold? What gave the kids the idea of looking for porn on the internet in the first place? Seems to me the threshold was already passed before they looked for it on the internet.
I'm almost 50 years old and my email is filtered, not by my choice, such that I still get the porn promotion emails but the urls are changed to be random character strings. Whether or not I would access such sites is not the issue.
The issue is of censorship of what is in fact a part of human nature.
If you make something as natural as sex bad then you'll guarantee the typical rebellious teen age person will find a way. And maybe that way is such an act as to spread disease and unwanted pregnancies.
What can porn teach? proper safe sex? It can perhaps remove some level of curiosity...
But porn or not, there is the natural human sex drive. Deny it and you'll have problems develop from ignorance and un-natural guilt. Such acts as rape included.
And how about the history of porn? What can it teach? The dangers of AIDs and other STDs?
If kids already know to look for porn on the internet, maybe its time the subject matter be properly addressed instead of being swept under the rug filter.
The biggest problem, the biggest contributing factor with the spread of AIDs in Africa, is ignorance.
The artificial barriers are keeping us all away from using the natural barriers to our advantage.
With correct understanding of the natural barriers, we can do a lot more and that includes users as well.
Math is inherently difficult to, especially if you are using the roman numeral system to do it with.
But we have this new abstraction set we use instead. Its called the decimal system with its "only a fool would think nothing can have vale" zero place holder.
Likewise, Programming has the same actions constants as anything else we do, especially in dealing with abstractions.
Math is not a process of putting blocks together anymore than programming is, but the basis of all math is simple addition. Likewise, the application of the action constants in programming, though having a basis on simple concepts, can most certainly be used in a manner beyond "adding blocks together" but of being dynamic.
So, educate yourself!
First: Deprogram yourself in your thinking (to use the analogy) it foolish that nothing can have value. Deprogram yourself from thinking what you were taught in regards to programming is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Because truth is not the whole picture that you will find in honesty.
Second: Know yourself! Learn how to recognize yours and others application of the action constants, that nobody can avoid using, no matter what you or they do.
Third: Apply your new awareness of your use of the action constants along with what you were taught about programming .
And realize programming today is barbaric, arrogant and limiting as to what we could be accomplishing. Not to mention voiding once and for all, via common knowledge, software patents.
...vista sucking will result in promotion for Linux.
Only don't promote Vista as a Linux user, Instead promote it like you work for MS.
Lets all face it, new and improved functionality must be weighed against new and improved problems and user constraints to have to again learn all about and deal with.
Who really wants to do that?
I was resistant to XP when it came out and I have never purchased a copy but use it at work and find it installed on systems people toss and I grab up or systems others give me. Do I like XP better than windows 98? Yes, some, as it has improvements that I could do without but are nicer than windows 98. But it also has irritations I'd rather not have that windows 98 doesn't have.
And that just a comparison of windows to windows. I use Linux 90%, or better, of the time at home. I have used Knoppix, still have it installed on one system but use ubuntu on my main system. (having drive trays is useful as I can swap out for windows98 as I have purchased several third party software packages and installed them on windows 98).
Of the windows XP boxes, I use one briefly for bellsouth/AT&T and linksys router control, because they only support windows (idiots). But I can and do run the live cd of linux dynebolic on them.
I have numerious systems including several PPC macs pre-osx and one imac post osx (interesting machine). I have systems that have MS DOS - pre-windows and later versions and onece had to deal with MS ME trash. Somewhere I have a MFM drive dual bootable (probably doesn't spin anymore) with old Minix on it.
I still have an Amiga 1000 and an Amiga 4000/toaster system.
The point is: I've tried a lot of different system, more than mentioned.
But what do I really want of an OS?
Of course I want a wide range of quality software I'm interested in, to run on it, thats a given.
The Amiga is the closest, and I'd probably like BeOS too.
But the problem here is that they are no longer reasonably supported and off shoots like AROS and BeOS's open source versions are yet to reach production level.
DragonFly BSD seems promising as does the Hurd and Minix 3, but they too lack in current state.
Overall I am greatly disappointed with the computer industry in regards to Operating Systems.
All things weighed, GNU/Linux currently gets the most points, But I don't consider it 100% Free Software, as there really are a lot of built in constraints.
100% FreeSoftware will only happen when software is easy enough to create that most anyone can do it, just as today most anyone can use a calculator.
Windows is very much the opposite of free, and the most pathetic example of MS dumbing down the users (a crime against consumers) is changing the names of applications and functionality and in general taking away functionality that should be considered fundamental. Philosophy being - make the users think they are stupid while giving teh professionals more to re-learn and charge for.
While GNU/Linux applies has it constraints one what the users can do for themselves.
So promote Vista..... Remember you are an IT professional and must support your income. When the users see past windows you still can have a go at them via Linux.
And remember, when this barbaric OS mentality is finally overcome, it won't matter to you cause you long be dead.
Things that cannot be patented: Natural Law, Physical Phenomenon, Abstract Ideas are the three primaries. Mathematical algorithms are also considered non-patentable but in fact are a subset of abstract ideas.
Man is unlike other animal life, he is capable of consciousness or in other words, abstraction above basic level. It is the nature or natural law of human character. It is further a physical phenomenon that man converts abstract thinking into physical movement and the creation, repair and manipulation of physical objects large and very very small. And programing is commonly thought of in terms of mathematical algorithms.
Software is not of patentable nature, It has all three primary strikes against it. So apparently the US position on software Patents is one of supporting Fraud. So is it really any surprise that we have problems with the patent system in regards to software? Would you have a with any other natural law, physical phenomenon or abstract idea if you went against the honesty about it? Try thinking that you can walk off a cliff without anything but your thoughts to keep you from falling!
It should be obvious why there are problems with the patent system regarding the IT sector. IBM is a very large software patent holder and the one most supporting this "reform". They are also making available many of their patents to anyone to use without need to compensate IBM for such use. IBM knows, but they are not ready to give it all up yet. The change has to happen across the IT board. It must happen. There is no excuse to not correct the wrong of fraud.
... we were in part genetically influenced by what we call alien life. Not in just one place on this planet. Perhaps the real questions are regarding time lines and why evidence either exist or does not. Rate of deterioration under what conditions?
This whole Darwin vs. god vs. intelligent design is all rather silly.
Its like right to life vs. freedom of choice. Want to know the truth about that? Ask a starving child!
Likewise, the evolution of conscious beings is probably a mix of Darwin, god (the right conditions existing - father physics and mother nature) and intelligent design, even though intelligence can sometimes be stupid (selective breading and external intelligence influence)
Anyone who wants to divide what actually is, is looking to create a problem that doesn't really exist.
.... if I purchase some products for which I later decide I no longer need and want to sell it so to reduce my losses from it and a company comes in an prevents me from selling such that they then are willing to pay the gigher price and buy it from me?
...go through the trouble to deal with such a photo leak has got to need psychiatric help.
I mean come on... Haven't pirates found out about OCR scanning and text certainly compresses better than images.
But then again, a genuine fan would want something that fits collector status in at least a minimal way. Like buy the book and hope to get it autographed.
Pirated works are not collectible except to a pirate maybe, and then its not even for the work as much as it is for the act of piracy.
Of course there are those who might like to be one up on a friend or two, by knowing what happens before their friends do..
Having been thin most all my life but finding I had high cholesterol, I was prescribed a popular anti-cholesterol medicine. I began to gain weight passing up what is normal for my height. But my doctor and chiropractor wanted me to lose weight, just 10 pounds. I found out about HFCS and eliminated it from my diet and within a few months lost 30 lbs. And all I did was remove HFCS from my diet.
I suspect since the anti-cholesterol medicine has an effect on the liver, and apparently HFCS is mostly processed by the Liver, has something to do with my weight gain once on the meds.
Now this article suggest other sugars also contribute. I suppose I need to further reduce my sugar intake.
But here is a HFCS tip: Bread! I would buy bread that didn't have HFCS in it and git used to which brand I'd buy. Then I discovered that all the bread I was buying had the ingredients changed to include HFCS. And this I discovered after the cola industry said they would stop selling their HFCS drinks at schools. I guess the HFCS industry simply shifted what they include it in. So the school kids still get it????
Nasty corn industry!!
Seems to me the corn industry needs to be heavily taxed where teh tax is used for health care..... like cigarettes..
So I can trust that the first vista system I find that someone has tossed I can take the hard-drive extract all sorts of information on them, even though they did wipe the drive.
But I'm then still not considered an external threat to them...
why make such complex systems for users that then need such data duplication? I can understand perhaps servers and such that need recovery ability.
.... recovering all the spam mail you deleted, when the lawyers want to prove you to be some sort of pervert on perscription drugs.
Seriously, this seems to contridict recent reports that linux is less secure then Vista.
So when is all the MS promotional hype going to be exposed for what it really is, a bunch of contradictory lies.
Is anyone keeping an accounting of all the Bull Shit coming out of Mircosoft promotion?
So it can be added up to find MS OS is ad promoting spyware that takes up resources that can better be used in user productivity.
There was a time when memory, storage space and megahertz were valuable resources.
And now we know why Vista required such resources yet performs from a user perspective, slower. Because its spying on you and dumping garbage all around your hard-drive.
I have the freedom to kill you, but you do not have the freedom to do so to me....
Its a double standard,
Now open source software should have the right to limit what you do with the software I write but I am not limited by it.
If I distribute open source software I should be able to sue the users of it??? Isn't that entrapment?
MS seems to have plenty of time to claim and promote that they have IP illegally in linux. And since Linus feels that MS should have the right to sue Linus.... well he asked for it then... And now we know who is in teh position to force MS to cough up the evidence of their claims...
I have yet to hear a good arguement against the GPLv3 that is not a double standard.
Freedom does not mean you have the right to take it away from another, or to do anything that imposes upon the freedom of another.
So what do you do when someone claims open source is not free because they are not allowed to use it and then impose restriction on teh freedoms of others with it?
The non-sequiturof this argument has been used extensively. Perhaps if the wrong doers use it enough they can convince themselves its fair. Oh wait, they already have.
And this is why we have different licensings...... Linus can continue to use GPLv2 and it doesn't mean others have to.
And if someone wants to GPLv3 the Kernal.....they can fork it too. right? Or has linus been only pretending to adhear to the GPL?
isn't this patent supposed to be sold to the record industry that they can profit from it?
Sounds like extortion to me, that MS is putting a tax on users for property that they do not own.... sort like what they are doing with claims they own IP in linux and offering protection for a price.
I wrote that and later created a wikipedia entry in part due to someone having created a wikipedia entry on me that was in error regarding related project. It was removed with the general claim that it was original research along with the distroted wikipedia entry someone else created on myself.
Now I've expanded upon ffii wiki here http://threeseas.net/abstraction_physics.html And as anyone can read the notes and references, I've been at this for some near two decades. Software is provably not subject matter of patent-ability, however there is this matter of mindset changes to take affect and effect the clairity of understanding the genuine nature of what software is, that software patents are act of fraud. Fraud against the natural human ability to think and communicate in terms of abstraction at higher level than other identified animal species.
After near twenty years of effort to communicate this and the fundamentals of abstraction physics, it seem its beginning to take hold and move in a direction of educational teaching. The USPTO knows of my effort. see the notes and references.
Its about proof of the non-patent-ability of software. Its not about politics unless you are trying to fabricate an excuse to ignore the fact that software is made up of what is universally agreed upon as to what is not patentable. Natural Law, Physical Phenomenon, Abstract ideas, mathematical equations, etc...
There is a lot already vested in Software Patents and its difficult to just suddenly disallow them as it will cause a disruption in business economics. But wrongs must be corrected!!!! Make no mistake about it. IBM is presenting a good example of what needs to happen. They are a major software patent holder and have a lot at stake. They are also on the mailing list of "open source as prior art" and I would imagine the mailing list for patent application peer-review that the USPTO has recently begun testing.
What IBM is doing is involuntarily removing the threat of their patent holdings by making them available for free use by others. And this is exactly what needs to happen. Business is not that bad guy! It is people in control who make bad choices. So the conversion of the vested interest into un-invested needs to be voluntary right now. once the momentum picks up, then enough weight will move changes in government policy regarding software patents in the US. Software patents should have never been allowed, but happen through court rooms not in the public eye. Hindsight is 20/20.
If I was a business that got caught up in the "get your software patented" or be forced out of business by those who do, AND then after doing so software patents are suddenly disallowed......You can be damn sure I'd YELL "ENTRAPMENT!!!"
It took 300 years for the general population to move to the hindu-arabic decimal system from Roman numerals.... But this conversion towards correction with todays technology and rate of advancement will certainly happen a lot faster. Especially with pressure in other ways regarding computer science.
This is a very unfortunate event for Dell, as word gets out and further investigation exposes more details...
Some how I believe this contains illegal acts that can be pursued against Dell. But then there seems to be a lot of bait and switch happening all around.
I don't even look at it, its deleted. So if everyone else is doing the same and their ISP is helping, where are the spammers getting their financial support from?
What the short review seem to be saying is that the author recognizes its not just math.
How in depth the book goes I do not know, but I do know I've been on about the abstraction perspective for near two decades and communicating it to everyone I can including to those in positions at universities.
Now I see this short book review "Computer Science Reconsidered: The Invocation Model of Process Expression"...yet I have not seen from any of them software or even an outline of such, that anyone can use to explore and apply the presented perspective. And we all know that to really understand something as it applies to computers requires that actual use of a computer in the learning process for verification of understanding.
Its all about Abstraction Physics no matter how you present it or what you call it. The evidence is in the inability to avoid using the mentioned action constants set, with or without computers. Know what you do, in everything you do!
At some point in the higher levels of abstraction creation and use you use the lower mathematical level as more or less a carrier wave of the higher level abstraction, than for the purpose of performing a mathematical calculation. The analogy is that of using radio waves to carry the music you hear over the radio, but the carrier wave is discardedafter it has done it job. Likewise, the mathematics of computers boils down to binary flipping of transistor swiches upon which the higher level of mathematics is carried upon.
With a correct approach to the abstraction manipulation machine computers really are, we can accomplish a lot more, similar to the difference between using the limitation of roman numerals in math vs. the decimal system with its zero place holder.
....To get them web-able would mean I could find a usable home for them....

Perhaps this hows the essence of MS mentality.... profit off the works of others.
Proof they invent nothing new.
isn't this patent supposed to be sold to the record industry that they can profit from it?
Sounds like extortion to me, that MS is putting a tax on users for property that they do not own.... sort like what they are doing with claims they own IP in linux and offering protection for a price.
MS the new techno mob?
Yes, the FFII!!!
From a now "read only" wiki http://wiki.ffii.org/IstTamaiEn
But then there seems to be a lot of bait and switch happening all around.
...Bush Administration And at what point does the meter raise to impeachment of the clan?
Maybe Micky wouldn't be so abused....
I don't even look at it, its deleted. So if everyone else is doing the same and their ISP is helping, where are the spammers getting their financial support from?
write a bad sci-fi fiction (what amounts to abstraction sequence) and show me the logic.
Abstraction is not a facet of logic, and you proved it!
What the short review seem to be saying is that the author recognizes its not just math.
_ Configuration.html which the link I gave in the parent post points to.
How in depth the book goes I do not know, but I do know I've been on about the abstraction perspective for near two decades and communicating it to everyone I can including to those in positions at universities.
I have noticed these last few years there are others beginning to grasp the bigger picture, such as J. Wing of CMU and her "Computational Thinking" perspective http://www.cs.cmu.edu/computational_thinking.html perspective and another P. Denning of GMU and his "Great Principles of Computing" http://cs.gmu.edu/cne/pjd/GP/GP-site/welcome.html and I'm sure there are others.
So, here is mine http://threeseas.net/vicprint/Virtual_Interaction
Its all about Abstraction Physics no matter how you present it or what you call it. The evidence is in the inability to avoid using the mentioned action constants set, with or without computers. Know what you do, in everything you do!
....Abstraction.
And computer science, the software side, is really the science of abstraction physics.
http://threeseas.net/abstraction_physics.html
