What this sounds like is a chip production success/failure rate improvement. As well as providing a bit more flexability in going from teh drawing board (design/theory) to production (testing/reality).
I think it is very interesting that they are using something that was considered to be bad in chip reality (electromigration), as a positive thing.
This is, in analogy, like how our bodies exist symboticly with many different germs and such, for without we'd die alot sooner.
I don't think what the article is talking about is anything like reprogrammable chips (FPGAs) as some may think by reading the article, but rather something automatically used once between the chip production line and its actual ongoing system use to auto test and correct any production anomolies per chip. (is this where we say bye bye Neo?)
.... if a patent application is written using the right lingo making it sound complicated and NOT fitting the classifications of what CANNOT be patented then even swinging sideways in a swing will get patent granted..... SOOOOO...
Using this exact lingo technique but in describing something in terms fitting the classifications of what cannot be patented......... go figure....
Time to study what qualities cannot be patented and why....
"I think that the dividing line so many people want to draw simply doesn't exist."
That is correct, at least as far as the actual physics and nature of programming goes.
Just consider what programming is:
programming is the act of automating complexity (usually made from simpler things) so to make the use and reuse of the complexity easy for the user of the complexity.
this can be anything from assembly coding to user configuration choices. From creating a function to making a function call from a library... to automating the connection between two different programs so to create a personal productivity automation..
what draws the line is the absence of allowing the general user to put things together for themselves. Where the proper environment require the three primary UIs...... which most all system lack in one manner or another.
Its like having the three primary colors of paint, red blue and yellow (light is red blue and green), where with these three you can make any other color, but limit the primarys to something less then these three and you greatly limit what the user of the paint can do.
Its really not about UIs the way they are being thought of in Gnome, KDE, etc.. as that is like presenting the users with some predefined mathmatical algorythim, rather than the fuller set of elements of mathmatics where they can do for themselves as they see fit, including starting with someone elses vision to create what they want.
How anyone figures open source is a curse due forking is only a result of failure to realise the mainstream proprietary systems have a ten year head start over open source.
And even when that gap shrinks due ten years becomming a smaller and smaller percentage over time, there is still the matter of proprietary taking from open source such ideas that it then focuses on to polish for sales.... where open source is a much larger force that does NOT deny possibilities...
About forking..... well guess what.... the good things that various forks expose can then later be reintegrated to come up with something even better than what proprietary would have been able to on its own..
Forking is just one part of a bigger picture... the other part is re-integration of good things...
its the shortsightedness of the Developer POV, be it inherent blind bias or intentional...
It works like this. If you think like a carpenter then you will expect things to work in terms of carpentry. Soooo, if you think like a developer then you will expect things to work in terms of the developer mindset...... which is typically NOT user friendly.
So Yeah..... alots a matter of hit and miss regarding the getting to a user interface the user is really happy with.
But this is a dual situation, as technically the easier programming becomes the more user happiness can have a direct influence on what gets developed. Or in other words, the user, more capable of programming, due easier programming methods, will themselves produce what makes them happy.....
Just like how developers do it now, for themselves...
I'm confused.... the article starts out with a title of "the future of the software industry" and then goes into talking about what MS is doing with their hord of cash.
Where is the connection?
Since the future is in open source software and its pretty much proving to be unbeatable or unbuyable by such proprietary companies as MS....then what does it matter what the future has beens, are doing today?
The only thing I see here are probably MS employees crying about where or what MS should spend the money on, like put it in their spoiled bank accounts...
It should also be clear that since MS has apparently determined that money can't buy good programming results.... then what does it matter that they are or not spending it on?
Programmers, coders, developers, produce high quality results when they don't have incentive to milk the job but rather are interested in following their heart in quality.
At any rate we now have some better idea as to how many MS employees post here.
Isn't there already something better?

Now.... does the shut down of the linux OS and its world wide use and expansion and contributions by many creators worldwide, willing participants, by those who have NOT themselves done the creation work in arguement, represent the purpose of granting IP right?
The answer is in the sum effect (assuming ELF is theirs to IP bitch slap who they chose with).... a negitive.
Maybe the thing to do is to start figuring out a way to do a boston tea party with all IP grants that are being used in such an IP bitch slapping manner.

Or hell, how about a home system where the whole family uses it..... where it becomes an internal machine learning conflict between what the different members of the family are interested in...
Machine learning built intro a browser is a very very bad idea that can only lead to greater user frustration overall and that's nt a very good trade off for what woudl be a much smaller benefit of...... Hmmm, of what? Being fucking to lazy (promoting ignorance) to better learn the system yourself, as a user?
Hmmm, what sort of auto-typecasting would such a machine come up with for such a lazy ignorant person?
What next, machines that think for you, or are conscious for you..... of what value is left in life....???? Ok so that's an extream but maybe its good to look at where it leads, even if it may never actually get to the extream (yeah right, there are just to many of us to eliminate that possibility from the possible spectrum, should such be implimented...)
"But honest your honor, the machine told me to do it...and I'm to fucking lazy to think for myself...."
So the real question is: how often will you need an upgrade to get the highlights..... or..... how long untill everything is written to trigger off the highlight function?

Then there the trillion dollar bet... ever wonder where alot of the easy come dot come money came from or what really happened that cause such a massive loss of capitol by the likes of Enron, Worldcom, etc...??? And of course maybe everyone was already leaving IE anyway and MS just decided to make it look like it was their idea and of course creating/maintaining the illusion that people follow what MS says...
Or maybe MS just had some "Black-Scholes Formula" in marketing that has turned bad all around (like the trillion dollar bet -- search google)....and they have yet to realize their marketing mouth has gingivitis...
thats theory that ignores this thing called consumer choice.
To get an idea of consumer choice, consider the boston tea party.

And if there is still doubt then perhaps its time to explore the content of the relative IP organizations such as teh USPTO and get a better understanding of the purpose and limitations of granting IP constraints.
When it is proven that such constraints not only can but do suppress human advancement then the constraint system will fall or change in order to accomodate human advancement.

How many can get faulty information onto it without your knowledge?

*) Do not connect to the internet.

Become aware of all communications from the internet and your computer.

But for the sane, what it comes down to is that the level or questioning going on regarding the current administration is relevant.
That is, we can certainly do much better than to have an administration of such questionable intent.
