  1. Re:Blame Canada! on Canadian Supreme Court Rules In Favor of Warrantless Cellphone Searches · · Score: 4, Informative

This really isn't news. In Canada evidence that was obtained through an improper search can be admissible anyway, so this is pretty much going along with rulings since the 1960's, reaffirmed post-1982 ratification. The law itself was updated when C-46 was passed to reorganize and fix the Criminal Code itself bringing it in line with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Just remember though, on appeal that same evidence that was allowed can be tossed out. Or in some cases even added in if it wasn't included in the original case. This of course is why S.7 of the charter is worded so strongly, and over the last 15 years the majority of cases have disallowed said evidence improperly obtained to be allowed.

And this is also why the court stated in their ruling that it allows obtaining of such only via cellphones also long as there are proper notes kept. This means, the chain of evidence must be maintained, and why it's one of the key reasons that evidence gained under a improper search is thrown out. For those that don't know, we already allow "improper search" under the law--this is done via the RIDE program.

Strange that AMD offered Nvidia to be a part of development and Nvidia said no. How does that work in terms of "they couldn't use it if they wanted to." Right it doesn't, they had their chance and their choice currently was to tell them to piss off because they threw their lot in with DX12. Interestingly enough, I have a feeling that as more devs grab mantle, nvidia is going to buckle on it especially with the performance gains vs DX. Unlike physx which has ened up being for naught.

Give it a few years, and the warranties will start coming back up...that is if they survived SSD's becoming the mainstream choice for storage.

    Ah a west-coast canuck. I'm a east-coaster.

We have 5 companies in total that another poster listed. Remember though, up until a few years ago we had zero competition, becuase these companies wanted to maintain a monopoly. Now you can pick any ISP you want, and pretty much get anything you want in terms of speed as long as it's available in your area.

http://canadianisp.ca/ is a fine resource for those who want to look around, myself I'm on Teksavvy(25/10 grandfathered plan though there are better I'm happy with it)--I pay the same rate I did in 2002 when I first got broadband from Rogers, and have a 300GB cap with zap the cap on--I have an unlimited cap but am throttled from 8pm to midnight. Midnight to 6am I believe it is downloads are always unlimited on every plan. Anyway, we've got lots of competition here now besides the incumbents. It reminds me of the US broadband market back in '99-01ish when you could get a 6/1DSL line for $9/mo unlimited in Indianapolis.

Now the problem in western canada is we've got lots of people moving there from the east and all of these companies have their heads up their ass in terms of rollouts for ports on DSL, and oversubbed cable lines. My sister is in Grande Cache, she's lived there now for 4-5 years, and it wasn't until last year when I was out there that she was able to get broadband because there were no ports available. It's a mess, a really bad mess. So much so that the improvement districts are looking at setting up their own municipal internet solution.

It just means a larger stockpile here, I heat with diesel(aka furnace oil), and ever since we increased exports there the cost of oil has gone up every year. So I'm perfectly fine with this.
