I stated to use Linux at desktop because I don't want to steal. It was not easy for average user to pay for software in former USSR countries and I decided that free software if OK for me.
Well, "right tool for the right job"... I stated to avoid Windows at late 90 and it was not easy to accomplish office tasks, other usual work with Linux. Linux was good for servers, programming, math but not for everyday use. Now I boot windows once per few month for an half of hour if I can not convert some graphics document or need some very specific win proggy.
Linux is still weak with vector graphics, video editing, real-world music apps but I can do simple tasks with Incscape, Kino and Rosegarden or Audacity. Linux today is much better today in games. Linux is better in office tasks. So I hope I will not boot Win anymore in 2-3 years.:)
Not at all! How can't you understand that education area is very important especialy at first user's steps. Once you get adapted to some enviroment you never want to learn another one. If I were Bill Gates, I'd give windows and all other M$ crap to schools for free. It's like dope so...

Well, guys, in times of Windows 3.1 Bill Gates said that global network will be NetBios-based and TCP/IP is crap that won't survive. He promised low-orbital satelites to give access to Microsoft net and a lot of other bullshit. All net people was laughing. Next year TCP/IP protocol stack was added to Windows 3.11 because web just exploded and OS without TCP/IP become ridiculous. And I never heard that Microsoft said "thank you" to BSD for used sockets code.
Yes, it really matters because users are primary target of developers, not OSes or whatever. 99% of users unfortunately are on M$ and it is very important to show them what the freedom in software world really means.
Why opinion such as "Open source for Windows is a waste of efforts" have rights to exist? Main reason is predatory behavior of Microsoft Corportaion on the market that provocates hatred of people working in the industry.
So I personally respect developers of crossplatform soft even much more then brilliant kernel developers.
