Another rule of thumb for security is: "Educate your user". Windows culture is built on exactly opposite paradigm: "You can do it by two mouse clicks. No need to learn nerd stuff".

I use FREE VirtualBox for such purposes. Install your WinXP _only_once_ with minimal set of tools you need and just save virtual disk somewhere. It's size is less then 1G. Then every time you need to work in hostile environment, load copy of this disk in your VirtualBox and go without fear! If something bad happens you may just erase disk image and replace it with saved clean copy. It takes about minute or two. So you'll have "infinite" windows security without a dime to pay for additional licenses.
Windows will never in nearest future run on ARM devices that are quite better then atom-based ones especially in energy consumption. I have ARM based Nokia N810 that works DAYS in online mode. It can run almost any linux application compiled for it and fits my shirt pocket.
I think that M$ will lose more and more in this market and Win7 can't help here whatever they change in it's development model. Dinosaurs were once big and scarry. Where they are now?:)

Quite aggressive position of assistant professors is a common thing at universities. They do not want even consider alternatives. Some of such smart professors at my university know only MS office and simply fears other products. MS office runs fine in Wine, but they need Windows only. Why? Because they just afraid of learning something new, sorry, but they do not want spend a little bit of time to learn. Teaching is easy, learning is difficult, yeah?
Second, they do not understand a little bit of software freedom concept. They blindly believe that MS is total solution for everything.
What to do? Educate your environment. Show them what it is and how easy it is. Give them easy opportunity to try things. Tell them why free standards and FOSS is important. Money is not important for them, they spend university money, not own, but may be freedom is important?
PS. I am professor of small Ukrainian university and I teach Internet technologies completely on free standards and products.

Is it market inertia? Is it some kind of world domination conspiracy of American government? Or what it could be? People think that worms and viruses are normal for any computer and no one from i.e. Apple of FOSS community do not bother to explain that viruses and worms can live only in Windows.

Multimedia apps are resource hogs today and this stuff will easily eat up all 1000 of cores. Yes, RAM is bottleneck but sound and video processing may be parallelized easily. Voice and image recognition, cryptography, voice synthesis, neural networks,....
A whole lot of modern tasks may utilize far more then today's 4 cores.
And the rescue is Linux on Palm hardware. They must foolow Nokia success with mojo project and support community effort of guys at http://hackndev.com/ that ported linux to many Palm models. Only few thing needed - full hardware specification of devices available to developers, tiny financial support and a bit of PR.
How they can be so stupid? Why they spent a lot of money on closed-source project with Linux kernel and PalmOS emulation, that did not give then anything?
I think they deserved to be drown for greed and torpor.
