    2. personally, i think that red hat had better keep up whatever voodoo magic they've been doing so the next several years come out "positive" for them too ($600,000 in net income is hardly going to topple microsoft). so far red hat is basically the *only* free software company to go anywhere. is it a fluke? yeah, i sorta think so. i don't think free software is a very viable market to get into. oh well, prove me wrong.

Sure some Linux companies are failing right now. So are a shitload of non-linux companies.

name ONE linux-centric company that will still be around in 5 years, besides redhat. i can't really think of any.

Redhat's breaking even and I can see them being profitable. IBM likes Linux because it makes them money through hardware sales and services.

redhat is breaking even, but they are the fluke of the whole thing. the difference between them and IBM is that IBM has a stake in something besides linux, that actually is profitable. IBM also has loads of money to throw at a linux venture, and if it fails, oh well. it's not like they're gonna go under.

with the linux/opensource start-ups, who base their entire biz around linux, this is not so. they will eventually go broke because you can't get buy on selling tshirts and coffee mugs while your developers work for $$$ and give it all away. it just doesn't work that way.

totally ignoring the other myriad obstacles linux has to get thru before it becomes a truly viable desktop operating system for the masses, the need for a fast, lightweight web browser is vital...still, even with it's non-standardness and annoying quirks, internet explorer beats the hell out of the competition
