  1. Re:Why old? on EU Project Aims To Switch Data Centers To Second Hand Car Batteries · · Score: 1

AA batteries are normally not Li-Ion. They are NiMH.
Li-Ion needs far more complex controllers in both charging and discharging. Most AA powered systems do not have the over-discharge protection that a Li-Ion battery requires in order to stay functional. In case of a short a Li-Ion battery may explode, thus it requires protection against overcurrent draw. Most battery powered devices don't even have a fuse.

Despite their difficulties Li-Ion batteries are widely used. This is because they can hold far more energy than NiMH batteries. Usually they are used in specific purpose batteries, non standard shapes.

Assuming this works the same as other electric devices, once you buy a new battery the supplier is obligated by European law to accept and recycle the old battery.
That also means the old battery can not leave the EU (probably unless it is recycled far enough to be considered a usable resource, dunno the specifics though) to prevent environmental disasters in 3rd world countries.

The problem is that modern digital systems have to many possibilities. You can not be certain that a security system with in field reprogramming abilities is safe.
It may be expensive (in both space and dollars) but critical systems should have safe limits embedded in the hardware. A powerplant should not be able to increase the output voltage without hardware modifications. A nuclear plant must fail safe, even if the software is hacked.

In essence you are right: It doesn't matter if those securities are in digital (relays for example) or analog (dunno how you'd do that). What matters is that they don't run software. However that is how digital vs analog is used these days. Language is fluid, it changes. What once was wrong now is correct. This has been forever, just analyze the word "regularly".

Can't find it in the article but it doesn't have to be smelly. If the gasses are heated to a sufficiently high temperature without oxygen we can not smell them anymore. This because the smelly molecules fall apart in these conditions. Heating without oxygen is how biochar is made.

These things are not a biohazard. Poop is.
Assuming a biodegradable detergent is used the things you mentioned in that list can just be dumped in the surface water without environmental effects.
Poop in drinking water is dangerous because it is loaded with bacteria. The gut bacteria from one person can cause diarrhea in another person.
Urine is no biohazard (except for when the source has a bladder infection or something like it). Kidneys are molecular sieves, amongst other things. Bacteria and viruses can not pass. Urine is next to sterile. It has less bacteria than bottled water.
Medical waste should be disposed of properly. True. A solar oven or a fire should be able to help for that. It is, however, not the main problem. The bacteria in poop are the main problem.
