My experience is, contractors tend to be motivated by one thing - money. Early on I got a nice contracting job doing electonic design. The same week I came on board they fired 40% of their workforce, some who had been there 15 years. They offered me a full time position later;-)) Subsequently the only company I would have considered a full time position at was IBM. The rest usually had some kind of wart that made me wary,,, so it isn't Always money.
Visual Basic for Applications Yes they will learn some bad habits. Most of the students won't be going on to be professional programmers anyway so won't matter. What you need to go for is that immediate kick of making something that works and is cool without too much hassle. I see the issue as *not* tuning up CS students but taking the fear and loathing of the computer insides away from Users, who are the majority.
Visual Basic for Applications The advantage is that you can do useful things with the GIU and with real applications like Excel and Word for immediate gratification and a whole lot of little customizing tweaks kids will love. Brainier ones can go onto VB and start hacking the desktop and do ASPs Real nerds can go onto the higher reaches of Linux and C or Perl. The idea here is to give everyone a reasonably useful intro and a look at the inside of apps and computers. Python is nice but I think its better to keep on the mainstream then to get into a new language that *might* become a killer app. Personally I started with 360 BAL and think assembler is the best way to start but then I'm wierd.
I have seen plenty of anonymous posts that had to have been from people inside the industry. I wanna Me Too this point cause its important. Some of the best stuff is from ACs and they should be able to both speak out and protect themselves.

On MSNBC, Kennedy was described as "the flower of his generation, the inspiration for young America."
I felt some emotion about this incident. Mainly because I can remember all the way back to JFK getting shot, presidents getting murdered tends to be upsetting to kids, and remember the other calameties of this family.
But I barely knew this kid existed, didn't follow the TV, didn't check it on the web. Was those past memories coming back. No big deal.
I'm insulated by living in Thailand, which does my perspective on affairs American lots of good, and it didn't get much coverage. Katz has some interesting things to say but he tends to assume the world revolves around the US. Turns out not to be the case.:-)
your fears of MS involvement with Perl are unfounded. Right! Perl on Windows will make Miscros~1 OSs better, more useable, more reliable and at least we'll have some way to work around the limitations. A good Language is more powerful than an OS.

3) The goals of the direction of perl seem, IMHO, mis-directed (PPM sucks - what the hell is wrong with compiling modules when it's a programming tool for crying out loud?) That's great on unices. I don't want to get into VC++, prefering to work in Perl. Even those who put linux advocacy ahead of Perl should be able to relate to that. Your "embrace and extend" paranoia is misplaced. Perl will at some point be included in the Windows distributions. The open source nature of Perl will open that OS. More important, having a modern and efficient language on Win will improve it immensely. So don't worry about what Micros~1 is going to do to Perl. But glad at what Perl is going to do for the majority, those who use the Win OS.

Seems like win-win to me. Perl cannot be corrupted, but it can and will improve its operating environments I want Perl as deep inside as we can get it Lets call it Beauty and the Beast
