It's already happening. KOffice, and I believe Abiword have already promised support for the OOo XML format. Corel, though not OSS, is on the bandwagon too.
Selfish me, you're right. Bill Gates really has worked a million times harder than most of us. Thanks for the enlightening post.
Because Bill Gates is a representative sampling of rich people, right?
It's just a bit disgusting when these guys will get a few million dollar bonus for keeping the salaries of the people who helped made them rich down for example. Or get millions of bucks even if they run a company into the ground, bankrupt it, and screw all of the stockholders and employees.
Oh yeah...they ALL do that. Every last one of 'em, driving people down with their greed! Thing is, not all rich people actually subscribe to this behaviour. You hear about the bad apples in the media, and then assume the whole lot of them are evil. It simply isn't true.
Did you know that if you have money in the bank, money in your pocket, and some change in a jar somewhere, you are among 12% of the world's richest people?
That's right. Most Americans are RICH compared to the rest of the world.
See? You're EEEEVILL! You're hordeing all the world's money aren't you, you dirty rich bastard!
Those EVIL rich people! How dare they be rich! It's not like they worked for their money or anything. No! They had it handed to them on a silver platter!
It disgusts me! We're all poor because they're a bunch of greedy, good-for-nothing bastards who horde all the money for themselves! They stuff it in their mattresses and roll naked in it! No, no, they don't spend it, they horde it just keep us poor!
I know that nobody likes taxes, but given that some taxes have to be collected, why a special ban on "internet taxes"? I pay special taxes when I take a flight, for instance, why does the airline industry have to suffer special taxes but the internet industry doesn't?
Why do you think? Do you think this has to do with preserving consumer interests and protecting your rights?
Pffft. Don't be ridiculous. It's called 'special interests'. Anyone notice that the nation's largest media conglomerate is also the largest Internet service provider? How about the world's largest software company also being a big ISP? Don't get me started at how much money SBC, AT&T, Verizon and company threw at this.
Come on. If google was the only search engine in town then I might agree with the idea but they aren't.
Microsoft? A dictator?
Come on. If Microsoft was the only OS/office suite company in town, then I might agree with the idea but they aren't.
If Microsoft started being assholes to their users most of them will simply go and use another OS/office suite. But they don't. So people keep using Windows and Office and the wonderful features they provide.
Just because Eolas is going after Microsoft doesn't mean that Eolas' patent doesn't hurt the WHOLE industry, including FOSS. Apple, The Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software, and the KDE Foundation all make software that violates the Eolas patent. And there are more, but these are the big ones.
Don't be so quick to be like "yay, Eolas!" just because it's Microsoft. Stuff that's bad for Microsoft isn't necessarily good for Open Source.
Wayyy back in the original Apple iTunes story, I posted a comment stating this very thing would happen. And HOW MANY Mac zealots jumped on me saying it would never happen./me has smug look on face.
Eric Laffoon recently made comments in his story about meeting Wil Wheaton statements about GUI capability in Quanta 3.2. If, so the 3.2 release could be a very important milestone for KDE, because it will mean that Dreamweaver finally has competition on Linux for those web developers still stuck on using WYSIWYG html editing tools.
Sharing MP3s, while illegal, isn't a crime, it's a civil matter.
There IS a difference.
It's like breaking a contract. There's nothing criminal about non-fraudulent breach of contract.
It's like this...let's say you're a painter. You request half the money down and half on completion. The jobs comes to $100, let's say. You get $50, paint the walls and such and everything comes out okay. The customer likes it, but refuses to pay the rest, for whatever reason.
Has the customer just committed a crime? Did the customer steal $50 from you?
Nope. It's not a criminal matter. Your only recourse is to SUE the customer. That's it. That's all you can do. You can't have the customer tossed in jail. BECAUSE IT ISN'T A CRIME.
Same goes with MP3s. The RIAA is suing, not putting people in jail. Why? Because it isn't a crime. Same reason.
Okay, this is not only a 12-year-old girl, but a 12-year-old girl LIVING IN THE PROJECTS. Her family is dirt poor. How exactly do you think this is going to play on the evening news? The American public will be OUTRAGED at the RIAA and this is going to be over soon. There will be a demand that Congress intervene and stop the RIAA from this course of action. The cries will be "will someone PLEASE think about the CHILDREN!" You watch.
Shoot me? Why? If you like, I'll give you the phone number of the supervisor I wrote the apps for.
It was some internally-developed stuff at GM and had to be user-installable. *Nothing* at GM is user-installable except for "data" files, and VBA applications are just that.
He's worried about possible terrorist actions taken against the U.S. government by its own citizens?
What, you mean like the mostly-forgotten oklahoma city bombing? The forgotten and still unsolved anthrax mailings?
Are you so certain those weren't the other way around? They convicted and executed Timothy McVeigh on almost *entirely* circumstancial evidence and a forced confession. Doesn't that seem the LEAST bit odd to you?
Well, *mostly* that's true. However, it can call other procceses which may or may not be priveleged. Remember that the COM/DCOM stuff runs with admin privs.
Speaking as someone who has written full-blown applications in VBA, OOo and StarOffice use StarBasic, which isn't quite the same thing as VBA. VBA is a lot more at the system level and gives you more control over the machine.
No, not for a second. I have a deep conviction that the freedom to communicate is absolutely essential to human progress. This conviction was forged during my youth growing up during quite turbulent times in Ireland, during which I learned that terrorism is not a product of freedom, it is a symptom of the absence of freedom and understanding. Censorship is the enemy of freedom and understanding, and therefore the friend of terrorism.
Exactly right, man. And it is that absence of freedom that will cause *further* terrorism in the U.S.
Anyone think this is the *real* reason Ian Clarke is leaving? He's worried about possible terrorist actions taken against the U.S. government by its own citizens?
Assume an elephant weighs about six tons, she says, that would mean that water inside a typical cumulous cloud would weigh about one hundred elephants.
Somehow it reminds me of RIAA's math equivalent.
Screw the RIAA. I wanna know what that is in Volkswagen Beetles!
Yep. They've been showcasing this stuff at a special handicapped mod vendors area (in the basement of Cobo) at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit at least a couple of years now. Saw it first-hand myself...they really sell this stuff, but it's a bit expensive.
It's already happening. KOffice, and I believe Abiword have already promised support for the OOo XML format. Corel, though not OSS, is on the bandwagon too.
So people who aren't rich don't get paid interest?

Evil I tell you, EEEEEEVVVVVIIIIIIILLL!

Why should have mixed emotions on this?

I implied that by extension...
;)
You often have to take things I say to the next logical step. That's how I think.
What Photon Ghoul hasn't mentioned, folks, is that he is an NSA operative. ;)

OTOH, that's better than your chances of hitting the Lotto. ;)
And an AK-47 so no one will come and take it away from you.
