I've never understood how "outlawing guns" would significantly reduce "gun crime". If someone is prepared to use a gun illegally, is aquiring one illegally really much of a barrier? Most likely not. All guns would just move to the black market.
Preventing the ability to legally acquire something that can be used illegally will never stop the illegal action from occuring. To wit: The War on Drugs.
It's amazing what types of companies you find in the middle of nowhere. I work for a small-ish company in western Washington (state) that does outsourced support services. We are occasionally hiring (www.dice.com, Dice ID RTL69189), and our offices are at a never-completed nuclear power plant.:-)
Exactly! eBooks have a looooooong way to go before they'll be anywhere near as effective as dead-tree books. I can get to the regular expression section of the O'Reilly JavaScript book in about one second because I know roughly where it's at in the spacial layout of the book - something that a list of bookmarks in an eBook has difficulty reproducing because you have to analyze what each bookmark actually says.
The O'Reilly book also has a longer battery life than an eBook.:-)
Right. Apps still have to be at least written to thread themselves properly for the OS to be able to do anything to help them. The difference between Mac OS X and Solaris/Linux/Windows is that the latter bunch has had SMP for a long time, and many apps have all been updated or written correctly from the get-go. Since Mac OS X is basically brand new, most software just isn't written to take advantage of that 2nd proc.
Agreed - you'll just have to try it. I recently replaced all my "normal" bulbs with GE "Reveal" bulbs. The great part? They're extremely cheap right now (I think I found them on sale for *less* than the price of normal bulbs). The bad? They (the cheap ones at least) don't put out as many lumens per watt as a normal bulb. It appears that the cheapo incandescent ones I got merely filter out most of the yellow, so therefore you get a more complete but also more dim light. They're not too much more dim - 15%-20% if I remember correctly.
I'd pay to read Slashdot, as well as all the other daily sources I read online every day.
The real question is... how do I pay $0.076? The person who figures that out (and makes it convenient and ubiquitous) will revolutionize the online world...

Is UNIX An OS?

· Score: 1
YESSSS!!! Someone finally answered the question "Is UNIX an OS?" Everyone else on this board seems to think the question was "what is an OS?" or "who hates Apple?" or "who thinks people that use GUIs are lame?".
Himi is right... UNIX is a concept, not a product. You can't hop down to Frys and buy a box of "UNIX". You can go to Frys and buy Debian Linux, Solaris, HP/UX, Red Hat Linux, etc. (okay, so I know you can't buy Solaris and HP/UX at Frys, but I'm making a point here!) You can't get/buy/steal "UNIX". You can only get/buy/steal a flavor of UNIX.
Games!!! It's much easier to keep kids interested if they get to "play" with their creation. I took a few "programming" classes in school (more like scripting, but the concepts are the same) and the coolest projects always came out of the games classes. The people just liked working on those projects more.
There's just as much (if not more) math and core logic in a game than in some lame-o "fake cheese factory inventory application". Games can span pretty much all languages, too. You'd be amazed what you can do even in JavaScript if you're creative enough.
I agree about sometimes having to submit to the man. (i.e. lying about the OS you're running) It's a s****y way of getting what you want, but if it comes down to that, definitely tell them you're running a Mac (or OS/2 or Be) or something like that. It enhances that "not all OSes are made by MS" mindset. Only if you can't pry any other info out of the bonehead callcenter people should you lie about using Windows. Hell, these setup calls are all toll free, so why not try a couple OSes before resorting to lying about Windows?

That fact is what makes "UNIX" not an OS.
