I am a long-time Linux Fanatic, and this OSX thing
is getting scary and interesting at the same time.
Imagine this scenario:
Mom: I want to have a computer to use the internet, and have Office so I can work at home once in a while.
Son: No problem, I'll get you a nice Athlon and install Linux and StarOffice
Mom: But I need the *real* Office, because the export filters sometimes mess my documents
Son: OK then, I'll install VMWare! You know, Linux is really stable compared to Windows...
Mom: I wasn't talking about 'Doze... I read./ too, you know;-) I want OSX. You know it runs Apache and MySQL too? You can even compile bash if you want.
Son: Sorry Mom, but give me *one* good reason why OSX is better and I'll shut up (Buwha ha ha!)
Mom: It has the real QuickTime with the *Sorenson* codec, and you've spent 2 years trying to make it work under Linux.
Son: DOH!

Okay, maybe it's not HDTV. (Anyways, I don't own a set, and I don't know anyone who owns one either).
But for the rest of us, there's VDSL, the DSL on steroids (up to 52mbps on copper). There have been some trials in US and Canada, I have seen the equipment and the thing is amazing. No new wiring, no disruption, digital TV, high-speed internet, plus internet telephony.
I'm having some problems with php4 under Mandrake7.2 (it worked thoughout the beta site, and only broke with their final update)
What is the problem? Did you submit a bug report? I'm responsible for the php packages, and have done a lot of tests. So let me know.
I'm not sure if they've solved their linuxconf problem yet, but there's been a lot of complaints on the cooker lists about that. I had to add it toinetd.conf myself to get the web interface to work
The crashing problem is solved (linuxconf-gui was the problem), as for the web interface, it's not enabled by default anymore, since we ship with both inetd and xinetd and that causes conflicts. (BTW, the RedHat one does not work also)
I'm definitely encouraged by the fact that they're integrating a PPPoE solution (means they're listening). Wonder if the fact that one of their developers lives here in Montreal has anything to do with that:) Yup... It has *everything* to do with me being in Montreal;-) Got cable at home but HSE at the office... and it's just across the street. Figure it out. jmdault (at) mandrake dot com
Okay, this is a commercial post, but I have a few customers on the road, so I have done it before. I work for NetRevolution, an ISP in Canada. We offer unlimited access for $19.95 CDN ($13 US) in over 800 US cities. Your can move from city to city with this account. We also resell the IPASS service, it covers more than 5000 cities worldwide. This is an option to your account, you pay between $2 and $15 per hour, billed in one-second increments. That's not cheap, but *way* cheaper than long-distance using payphones. Speaking of payphones, you might want to check Konexx. They sell the Konexx Coupler, which is a gadget you strap on any phone and plug into your laptop. So you can use internet at up to 26400 bps on any public phone. One of my friends builds wood cases. There's a page where you can see one. It's in french, and the picture has been scanned poorly, but it's really different than anything I've ever seen. http://draginfo.qc.ca/shop-pcbox.html
It _does_ work with your actual windows partition. But you have to edit the settings manually, and put: # virtual hard disk on primary master ide0:0.present = TRUE ide0:0.fileName = "/dev/hda" ide0:0.mode = persistent
I downloaded it just before 1AM, and I'm still up. This vmware is really amazing. I installed it, specified to boot on my/dev/hda. When I press the "Power on" button, I get the "LILO" prompt, and I select my Win95 image!
It's really slow for the moment, since it runs a lot of debugging code as well, but on my 233 chip, I can boot Win95 with WinAmp and it works!
That's soooooooo incredible! Version 0.1.. imagine what version 1.0 will be like!

Here are some slides that talk about it.
[root@ADVX jmdault]# rpm -qf /usr/lib/libdl.so
glibc-devel-2.2.2-4mdk
[root@ADVX jmdault]# cat /etc/mandrake-release
Linux Mandrake release 8.0 (Traktopel) for i586

So if you have problems compiling stuff, that's because you only installed the 1st one, or had the desktop version sold in Wal-Mart.
And xchat is working, I use it all the time to go on IRC...
Forgot to mention that they are working great in RC2 and final 8.0, of course!

A GUI is great for newbies that purchase the CD-ROM. You can put all the bells and whistles to offer a good alternative to M$.
Hackers prefer the command line, I agree. But then, when you install by command line, you should know how to use fdisk.
Mandrake will offer best of both worlds.

Why don't businesses read this story by KPMG:
http://www.kpmg.ca/vl/surveys/xs990311.htm
They studied 10,000 cities around the world to find the best place to start a business. The city where I live, Sherbrooke, Canada ranks best.
I prefer to live here and make $30,000 CDN per year than be broke at $70,000 US and live in a polluted city...

Yes, it takes RedHat as a basis, because you have to start somewhere. But here's what makes the big difference:
- Pentium uptimizations (5-30% faster)
- Updated packages, latest versions
- UDMA optimizations
- Pre-configured applications
- Almost 100 RH6 bugs fixed
- *REAL* KDE 1.1.1, not a pre-release
- KDE Themes, more KDE apps
- True Type fonts
- Internationalization (accents, man-pages...)
- Apache 1.3.6 with PHP3.0.8 integrated
Now, what do you want more???
JM
We have LPR, SMBPrint, Postscript, that's enough for me.
Want faxing? http://www.tpc.int
These news guys should get a job as janitors!!!
Yeah, another distro..
It's based on RedHat, but it has KDE, it's really easy to install.
Actually, it comes without WinCE. You have to specify the right product code.

PCM-5820-E0A1: Cyrix GXM SBC with Processor, Audio, VGA/LCD and Ethernet
PCM-5820CE-10C: Same as PCM-5820-E0A1, but with a 10 MB Compact Flash card with Windows® CE Ver. 2.1
And then buy a FlashCard and mke2fs it!
I believe the Cyrix CX 5530 PCI sound interface
is 100% sound blaster compatible.
I don't know if it's exactly the same chip, but Alan Cox uses the MediaGX sound chip on his desktop and that he uses it to test his sb16 driver.
If that's right, I'm buying!!!!
I have (what used to be) Caldera OpenLinux with 2.2.3 here and it works.
Check if you have module support in your kernel,
then do:
make dep;make clean;make;make modules; make install_modules; make install; reboot
And then do a `depmod -a` to make sure all module dependencies are okay.
YMMV
The way I see it, you *could* dial with Windows, install a proxy server on it, and use the vmnet1 device in Linux.
;)
Yeah, it would be unreliable, but I hate to say something is impossible
Winmodems will probably not work, anyways, they suck. But I kinda like Lucent LT PCI Winmodems, and I'd like to see someone test it...
I had a similar problem. It refuses to power on if the CD-ROM is enabled with SCSI emulation.
Probably something I have overlooked.
vmware creates a fake AMD Lance network card, and it binds it to a /dev/vmnet1 device on your Linux system.
So you dial under Linux and either use a second IP for windows or use IP masquerading.
Pretty neat!
It depends on your license file! =)
Mine expires in one month.. I hope we can download another license after that!
