On normal analogue antenna - 5 channels, BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Five. On Digital Freeview (antenna) - something like 20, including ITV 2, BBC 3 and 4, BBC News 24 etc. On Sky (Satellite) or NTL/Telewest (digital cable) - I have over 300. Sat/Cable has a monthly fee, freeview costs around 60 one-off, and analogue services are free (except for the license fee).
Check out www.channel4.com, www.itv.com, www.five.tv and www.sky.com to see what we get.
BBC America is pants and has none of the good stuff from the BBC over here (I lived Stateside for 4 years, so I'm not just guessing). IMHO the license fee is well worth it, and it's not like Big Brother comes looking for non-payers much anyway.
This OT but my money is worth more than my karma...
I had a buyer purchase my Sony Playstation on Ebay. Surprise surprise, its from a brand new ebayer acting on behalf of a relative in Nigeria. The offered US$22 (funny, the bid was GB20) via Western Union. I received an email from "Western Union" but actually from an accountant.com address (like the one in the article). I smell a rat and obviously won't send anything, but is this accountant.com a known haven for scammers?
The BBC has a very good food section that, in addition to having info on cooking shows and celebrity chefs, allows you to search its extensive collection of recipes - both from shows and submitted by readers. Also, they publish a magazine called Good Food from which (no doubt) many of these recipes are taken.
I actually got a reply from the Beeb at just after 1900 GMT this evening.
Dear Sir
Thanks for your e-mail.
I have noted the points you made - as well as the vigorous debate on Slashdot.org about this article.
Well, Stephen Evan's weekly "stateside" column is not a news story, but an analytical look at major events and business trends in the United States.
It is, of course, debatable whether MyDoom/Novarg/Shimgapi was written just to bring down the SCO website, or whether the installation of spamming tools on numerous computers was an additional - or even the main - motive.
That was not the point of Stephen's article.
In his piece he wanted to draw the attention of BBC News Online's audience - many of whom are unlikely to know the ins and outs of the Open Source debate - to the rapid spread of Linux as a commercial application, SCO's attempts to cash in on this fact, and the deep anger that SCO has caused within the Linux community through its legal actions.
Stephen is not the first to draw the link between MyDoom and SCO's actions over Linux - plenty of others have done that before, including virus experts.
Another such incident was the crash of an A320-100 (F-GFKC) on her maiden flight with Air France. During a low level pass of the airfield (for the press) the PF (the Captain AFAIK) realised too late that there were trees at the end of the runway. He initiated a go around (putting the throttles in the Take Off Go Around detent) and raised the nose. The flight computer kept the nose low to avoid a stall while the engines spooled up (it takes a jet engine somewhere between 6 and 9 seconds to go from idle to TOGA power). The engines didn't spool up in time and the aircraft hit the trees.
Fair enough, I'll admit defeat on that count. But you got pretty close with Vietnam, El Salvador and Hiroshima (including deaths from cancer, etc). Funny comment, tho, about Philip Morris!
So you caught who you think is Saddam. You reckon your government won't fudge the DNA tests like it fudges your elections to make sure this guy "is" Saddam?
Fine, the man is a bastard. I agree with that. He's killed hundreds of thousands. THAT DIDN'T GIVE YOUR OR US (the Brits) ANY RIGHT TO OVERTHROW HIM!
The US has killed far more people than Saddam ever hoped to, and the British (in this war, at least) have been your willing lap dogs. I am absolutely fed up with the crap I get from Sky and CNN about this arrest.
Do you think this will actually mean the end of, or even a reduction in, the attacks against coalition forces in Iraq? You've fucking invaded someone's country! I would be fighting against any "S.O.B" who even tries to get near my country, so why do you think that Joe Iraqi will welcome you with open arms. I'm sorry, it's blatantly obvious to the rest of the world why the coalition did this, I only hope that we'll all get out of Iraq before more people die.
Maybe all the years of joking about French "cowardice" took their toll. You Yanks (and we Brits) tend to forget about the thousands of French Resistance who died in the war, long before Roosevelt decided to join in.
Seriously, though, do you all honestly expect every country to kowtow to your version of how the world should be? Please grow up and stop whining whenever someone disagrees.
More on-topic though, I am far more disappointed (though not surprised) that the EU has given in on this issue than I am about the US making the "suggestion" that we compromise Galileo in this way. It's about time Brussels cleaned up its act, got the UK fully on board, and acted like a world power rather than the Has-Been Club.
I'm in a similar boat to Mr. Interrupt... I am here on what is officially known as an ancestry visa, which gives me 4 years to work here, after which I apply for permanent leave to remain, and after 5 years total (including the 4 on the ancestry visa) I get my passport. I applied through the Embassy in New York and had it processed within 3 days.
The only kicker is I can't claim benefits (but I can use the NHS). There's all sorts of little things you have to watch out for (like the requirment to have spent x amount of time in the UK within the last 4 years for Indefinite Leave to be issued), but it's quite straightforward.
No, if you look in the new (well, not new, but the new-er red UK passports) you'll see it says Citizen of the United Kingdom. The old black hard-covered passports said "subject," but that changed some years back.
Yeah, the ads here in the UK on Five are pretty bad. About on par with Celine bloody Dion ('stsie) and the Dixie Chicks for all-time horrible-ness. Can't get enough of the funny names of these American Football players either... Napoleon?! Please, give me a break! Oh no! It's Shania now.. gotta go!
Clarification on International Drivers License.

An international drivers license is usually only issued on the basis of having a _valid_ national license. Here in the UK you must take a valid UK license to the Post Office (or the AA) to get an International License.
It is also not valid for the country of issue, and I'm betting most insurance companies won't accept one when insuring your vehicle. So basically, I'd need some form of valid foreign license to get an international license that I could use in the USA, and even then I'd be driving without insurance, which I know is illegal in most if not all states.
So I don't see why anyone should fall for this scam...
People, this is probably someone's attempt at humor based on a story floating around about a BSD developer being hassled in some small town about the "devil" being on her BSD t-shirt. Not Everthing is Flame Bait!
Fair enough, but you need to be One Hundred Percent certain the person you put to death is guilty. Until a time when you can guarantee this, put a moratorium on executions.
Also, keeping people alive for 20 or more years on death row is inhumane. People change over that amount of time, expecially when they don't know if they'll see another day.
>I believe that anyone who intentionally rapes, kills, or >causes intense suffering to others for fun should be >destroyed as a defective human being.
That's until, by some law not yet passed, society deems you a defective human being for thoughtcrime or something like that. What goes around comes around; don't support a law or view that you yourself would not like to be the victim/target of.
Good argument, though. Finally, an intelligent post on the subject!
He's right, you know. It can be very frustrating dealing with just the sort of out-of-date docs and things when trying to get work done with _some_ OS software. I'm not an expert in programming/compiling/debugging/whatever, but _shouldn't have to be_ to get it to work. Why do so many people get all riled up when someone who didn't graduate Summa Cum Laude in Comp. Sci. finds something a bit difficult? Just my $0.02.

Just as well, seeing how bad some drivers are anyway (anyone see Britain's Worst Drivers last night?).
He's not at fault, fuck the government for forcing out yet another head of a media organisation that refuses to toe the line.

Do your research, the BBC is publicly funded but (as the recent debacle proves) is anything _but_ a "government organ."

Not really. Bush _is_ a fool but OSS advocates _didn't_ write MyDoom. 1 out of 2 ain't bad.
