So far, they haven't decreased the crime rate even a single %
I know that in Edinburgh the CCTV cameras in conjuction with the Shopwatch systems (all the shops have a radio link back to the CCTV control centre, which in turn can contact the police if the "mall cop" types can't get the job done) has a pretty damn near 100% success rate at getting shoplifters and other "petty criminals" caught.
Sad to say, the conviction rate is almost zero, because in the face of overwhelming evidence against the accused, the courts just issue a small fine which they have no expectation of ever seeing paid.
The cameras work well. The security guys and the police work well. The courts, they're not so great.
Consider that the "binary blob" in most drivers is in reality the firmware for the card, without which it's a fairly dull FPGA with maybe some spiffy maths goodness tacked on.
Now, how exactly does that differ from the closed binary firmware in your hard disk, or keyboard, or mouse?
In the UK, we have two classes of offence, civil offences and criminal offences. Now, civil offences are generally not terribly serious things; a speeding ticket won't get you a criminal record, it'll get you a £60 fine and an endorsement on your licence for four years. However, 30mph over the posted speed limit is frequently prosecuted as "dangerous driving" which is a criminal offence.
TL;DR - it's all a matter of degree. It's perfectly legal in the UK to be a dick to someone, but not to the extent that this guy took it.
"Hello Iran, you want a nuclear programme? Well I'll tell you what, how about we lend you some gear, and we'll send over some guys to help you run it? Great! Now, when you get pretty good at Pu-238 we're going to want to buy everything you make. Oil? Nah, keep it..."
The Palestinians are fighting against an occupying force that is herding them into ghettos and indiscriminately slaughtering civilians. For their part, the Israelis are using their IDF paramilitary terrorists to expand their lebensraum, and trying to deal with their Arab "problem" once and for all.
Of course, you can do what the Israelis do, and despite all evidence to the contrary claim that you're being attacked from inside mosques and schools, and blow them to bits anyway.
That way you get the best of all possible worlds; you get to blow up innocent civilians (frequently children) thus maximising the terror impact, you get to destroy important infrastructure like hospitals, schools and churches that are protected under the Geneva Convention, and you get to mount a great smear campaign on the enemy.
I'd be curious to know how people in the UK feel about the congestion fee toll which also can essentially know when your car was at certain places.
I'm in the UK. It's completely irrelevant to me. The only city with congestion charge cameras is London, and I haven't been there for about 20 years. I can't see myself driving there any time in the future, either.
I keep my fridge about 2ÂC, in accordance with Food Standards Agency guidelines. Hey, if it works for food safety at work, it works for food safety at home;-)
The only reason you'd ever drink beer *cold* is if it tastes so disgusting it has to numb your tastebuds before they register what it actually tastes like.
Beer should be drunk at cellar temperature, somewhere between 6 and 8ÂC.
Filling the young people who are just about to set off down their academic path with enthusiasm and excitement for all the Really Cool Things you get to do with science, obviously.
"Optical drive"? Is that the slidey thing you put those sort of shaving mirror thingies into? I remember we used to use something like that in the olden days.
It's a pain in the arse, though. Why do people who live in cities need fast internet connections? It's not really a crisis for them if they can't get online, since they are going to be spending all their time walking to bus stops and travelling to the CBD to do their shopping...
It's also worth pointing out that unlike the US, pretty much all the TVs in the UK and EU have at least one RGB connection. This means you can get a really nice crisp picture from your TV, far better than with the composite connections.
Yes, I actually am a farmer. High-speed internet access is more important than you'd expect. We spend a lot of time buying and selling livestock, and doing it over fast reliable internet connections takes a lot of the hassle out of it. We buy fuel and materials online, because it's cheaper and quicker than trailing around various different suppliers.
I probably spend more time online working on farm-related stuff than I used to on webdev-related stuff when I did that;-)
I was never vaccinated for measles; no-one I know was. Thirty years ago it just wasn't really seen as a big deal. You got measles, you got better, you never got it again. I don't see why there's such a big screaming panic about a disease that gives you spots and a bit of a temperature, and a couple of days off school...
Mind you, that's probably not a good idea for the legitimate owner, as if they've done anything shady then they'd essentially be waiving their right to fourth amendment privacy by granting access to the police
This is why you must always maintain a minimum standard of shadiness that can be readily explained away, thus hiding the real shadiness.
More annoying would be if it runs around autocorrecting spelling of documents written in a language it doesn't understand. Or worse, if it tries to mangle everything into that hideous American patois by removing the letter "U" from words like "colour".
Both, shading towards the latter; there's ample evidence but the cases get tossed out by the CPS.

You'd think they'd know better, woudln't you?

Every car has its number plate recorded and entered into a database anyway. All this will do is put the parking attendants out of a job.
It's pretty much only used in America. Everyone else uses TETRA, or if they don't want trunking DMR or iDAS.

That one in the article *is* in Sicily, though, which is roughly as far south as San Francisco.
I can't see it doing too well in northerly climes.

Their investment paid off.
I've used a 3.5" floppy drive more recently than I've used an optical drive.

Dear Slashdot Janitors,
Is there a reason why you make it so unpleasant and troublesome to contribute to your site?

Because when there's nothing worth watching you can still play GTA:San Andreas.

I think the general consensus is that Visual Studio is the best IDE out there
How can it be the "best" if it doesn't run on any relevant platform? As far as I can see, it's Windows-only.
