XNA is effectively a game specific library that lets you develop for the xbox and windows. When they say XNA they really mean XNA + .net which combined has a pretty extensive library for game development. While XNA has a lot of helper libraries that let you work with DirectX and managed code, it does not really have anything specific related to AI and since this is an AI project primarily that statement seems to be an advertisement for XNA.

As good a point as you make, it does not specify if the laptops are in use only for recreation. There will be people who simply want to take notes, look things up etc. Personally i would like to leave it up to the lecturer, a class is still the lecturer's domain and if he is not in control of the information flow then really you aren't doing him justice.

everyone wants to raise their kids the way they were raised. The way they were raised was the best way simply because its the only way they know and as far as they are concerned, they were raised just fine.

Although in this case it should be easier to rate which one is better, i'd go for whatever language is easy for the childs age, they will eventually learn to detach the logic from the code after a few languages unless you are worried that learning another language will cause them to lose interest so hook them up on any language/system with a lot of visuals.

  5. cost less to make? on Examining Indie Game Pricing · · Score: 2

um... they just cost less to make? 2-3 devs over less than a year can dish out a decent quality indie game. We dont have huge content teams, we dont spend a huge amount on marketing, we dont pay huge royalties to engine devs, we dont have a publisher to swallow up a huge %. That is just how much it costs to make.
Proportions wise, it costs $23 mil to make a AAA title today and the average indie game costs lets say 120k to make (3 devs working for 6 months maybe) so its about what 1/200th of the cost? 1/200th of 60 is a lot less than $10 but that is because a lot of indie games simply sell a lot less.

The cruel truth about the game development industry is even if you have good graphics, good gameplay, a great storyline and writing, there is still a chance that your game will flop, you will lose your publisher and with that your studio. A hit driven industry is always cruel to some games, none more so than psychonauts

I am thinking the reason for the delay is: 1. They want to make it longer than the first 2 episodes, because the last 2 were short. 2. They are innovating, episode 1 had the new HDR and animation and stuff, ep 2 had lots of open spaces and foliage, hopefully episode 3 will be something new too. 3. They are trying to decide which way to take the half life universe, setting up half life 3. Half life IS their flagship and what put them on the map.

Why do you think its called 'Terrorism' and not 'mass killing'. The key point is just that, Terror. I too am aware of the the extremely low chance of dying in a terrorist attack. But the objective of terrorism is not to kill people, its to create panic, hysteria and generally bad things to a country/people. You are already paying for terrorism. Your tax payer money is going into it, you feel depression when you think of the attacks, lots of money going into security, investigation and diplomacy, there is a drop in tourism because of it, the stock market dips a bit, you feel a slight tinge of fear when you step into a train or a bus. The people who actually die in a terrorist attack aren't that important, neither are the people who are on the ground shooting/hijacking/blowing things up. The handlers and the people who fund and harbor them are. Now to each his own in the whole privacy thing. Since you are an Indian you would know how important the 26/11 tapes to build up a case against those who apparently sent those terrorists. There are worse things that can happen than losing a bit of your privacy to a government you cant trust. Just like having to show ID before using a cyber cafe in India, I personally believe that its a small price to pay. (Terrorists use random pre determined message boards to communicate, not email, so this is something of a deterrent)

Ignoring the 'crappy, little and backwards' part of your post, i'd like you to know that monitoring of mobile phone services in a country like India is one of the very few ways to actually fix a littttle problem that we have. The attacks in Mumbai in December were pretty devastating, we are regularly hit by terrorists off and on (when was the last half decent terrorist hit in the US? 2001?) so your comparison is unwarranted. What you should remember is that the taped conversations and their handlers who were sitting pretty in a neighboring country were one of the most important pieces of evidence against them (the handlers and the country housing them). If it was not for those, the case would have been much weaker. Maybe you live in a safer country than India, but I for one would gladly give up a part of my privacy if it helps the authorities nab the fanatics who perpetrate these acts. Some sacrifices are just worth it, even if your government misuses them. PS: India's independence day in 3 hours from this post.

Quake 3 and ID software thrived on mods and modifications to their engine and changing the source code. I was never that great at quake 3 but I would love to play freeze tag. For those who don't know, freeze tag is a team mod of quake 3 where everyone has only a modified railgun. Shooting an opponent freezes him so he cant participate in the round, you can unfreeze teammates by standing next to them for 2 seconds causing them to respawn immediately. Freezing the entire team earns your team one point and causes everyone to respawn. It was a superb game mode that i enjoyed a lot more than the regular game.

  16. Re:Next step to prevent PC piracy on DRM-Free Game Suffers 90% Piracy, Offers Amnesty · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but in my experience the vast majority of pirates will pirate virtually everything and play it. And when something really special comes out they WILL buy it. You can tell when they are excited cos they come up to you and say "Dude, i'm GETTING that game". And you know they are going to buy it. Everyone knows the argument that every pirated copy is not a lost sale, hence perfect DRM wont give you a 1:1 pirated copy to sale ratio. However it WILL result in significantly higher sales, twice as much is a lot. Hopefully that will bring the price of games down creating a somewhat regenerative cycle of price cuts and sales (assuming every game is not a $100 mil bonanza like starcraft 2 is). People will realize that games provide a much higher entertainment time : price ratio than do movies. Pirates will suddenly find themselves with nothing to do because they cant play, will have to spend a bit on the games that they realllly want and will buy. The only downside that i see to this entire thing is since people will only have so much money, they would like to spend it on games that can suck up a lot of time or have established credentials. A game like GTA 4 will florish as will games with strong multiplayer components. But games which have a short quick singleplayer experience will suffer i.e. indies.
