Here's reality for you. Under US law, a crime has been committed. They have a legal right to investigate. They need only show reasonable cause and some relevant link to the requested information for a judge to grant access. Period. That's it. That's due process and is EXACTLY how the law should function. Period. End of discussion. Therefore, if someone were to delete the information after being made aware (legal notice not required) the feds are interested in the data, then those parties are in violation of the law and can be prosecuted to the full extend provided by the law. Period. End of discussion.
Here's reality for you. Bradley Manning allegedly committed a crime ( he has not been charged or convicted and is therefor innocent until proven guilty) by disclosing classified information. He has not yet received a trial while being held, which prior to the Bush admin, would only have been allowed for 24 hours. Until Manning testifies before a grand jury and starts name dropping, the government has no right to request personal information or issue subpoenas regarding information of other persons which they have no direct evidence to link them to the commission of a crime. So in order for them to actually do this by the letter of the law, there has to be some evidence that has been presented that they are, as of yet, not telling us to link those persons to the commission of the crime in question.
because prior to the interwebs, newspapers were virtually local only unless you had an out of town subscription. Much more difficult for Joe in Seattle to read about leaked government documents in the Chattanooga News Free Press 15+ years ago. So the damage was minimal when a paper published information that had been gathered and leaked to them illegally and they could call on the first amendment to protect them.
What the US gov't is trying to find out is, whether or not Manning received assistance and/or coercion from the other big names involved (Assange, Jonsdottir et al). Which, if they did assist or coerce him, then yes they committed espionage which the US has laws against.
My hope is that the Gov't finds nothing and is left with their dicks in their hands. But, as my old papaw used to say, "if you don't want to get caught doing something you shouldn't do, either don't do it or be smarter than the people you're trying to hide it from. If you're not, hire them and make them do it."
eh if you're comparing a strand to another strand... it doesn't take that long. Not sure if it's the same thing, but when I legitimized my daughter via dna test, it only took them 4 days. I could be wrong however and have no idea what they do in those tests.
major difference is, shows and movies will often times hire doctors/lawyers/police/military consultants to try to get atleast some of the aspects of what they are doing correct. I don't know of ANY off the top of my head that hire(d) programmers/script kiddies/developers to consult on lingo/jargon/practice... except maybe Chuck, and they didn't hire anyone, their tech is pretty bad, but they atleast had Dell come in and install Dell server faceplates everywhere!
Correct in essence, I tend to think that it's chosen niche is in reality, whether intended or not, part of it's protection scheme. I have played other games like FFXI et al where at times, you would see dozens upon dozens of botters/farmer all in 1 place with no ability to do anything about it. Thankfully, in EVE you really are only going to see groups of 1-5 and can actually do something utilizing the in-game mechanics rather than just having to file petition after petition after petition.
The truth of it is, I do like how the system is run, I don't like everything about it, but enough that I am content with it. Thankfully, the developers at CCP are decently open enough with people about their reasons for doing things and they are generally pretty damn sound. Though, method of execution can sometimes be asinine.
As I have told many many friends throughout the years, you are never safe unless you are docked in a nice nifty High sec NPC station with all of your wordly goods stashed safely in your own hangar inside of password protected station vaults and even then someone could still hack your shit. The reason I say this is, you can shoot anyone, anywhere, at any time in the game, you may just get concorded for it.
As to blocking connections, if they are having issue with specific ones, they damn sure do. Call me funny, but I've yet to have a Nigerian prince contact me in game to tell me that I've won free isk...
As for being able to play the game with ISK, shit, I love it, I havent had to pay real money for any of my account in years. I wish more games out there would do it. A quick googling of "buy isk online" and the results come up with a bunch of sites that have nearly a 1:1 ratio of $ to isk vs $ to PLEX isk. They MIGHT be scraping by on a few pennies of profit per transaction that way.
If you really want to complain about something, complain about the clusterfuck that is undocking from Jita 4-4, the suicide ganking at the same station and the amount of scams in jita local lol.
They are caught all the time. One of the guys in a channel i hang out in just got busted for buying isk, they took the amount he bought directly out of his wallet putting him -250mil. I've personally seen the banhammer come down on several botters and isk sellers. Hell they even put in a menu option when you right click on someone that reports them as spammer/botter.
apparently you haven't come to the realization that botting in eve is far far less than in pretty much any other game I have ever played and that includes pretty much all of them since UO. CCP is hands down more active against botters/macro miners/isk buyers than let's say SquareEnix. They just dont cancel your account, they immediately take the money right out of your character's wallet.
This is why its fun to kill any RMT miners/ratters you come across on a regular basis. Its one of the the things that makes eve so much more fun. In other games, you cannot kill RMT's and thus cost money and time. And when we're talking about RMT miners, we're talking easily 200mil + per ship loss. At an average of 10mil per hour in mining, you're costing them 20 hours of work everytime you pop one of them.
From my brief and infuriating experiences with EVE, my impression was that the in-game economy was already fucked beyond all hope.
From your brief stay, one would assume you had no clue as to how the economy works in the game.
I don't know what schools you went to, but to get on honor roll of any of the public schools I went to, you had to carry an A average AND your behavior was taken into account as well.
Also, I say metaphor because people say things on a daily basis that may not mean what they intended or don't intend it to be what it comes out as. "That's gay" is one that I hear a great deal.
You're retarded. TFA specifically states the students involved are all honor roll students. Not only that, but people all over the world say things all day long that aren't true and we call them metaphors.
Palin has no chance. Every poll run shows that she is a virtual laughing stock to anyone that isn't a Palinite. She has her own reality show for pete's sake.
Corruption in the low/mid/high levels of Government, absolutely. But guess what, the phrase "Power corrupts" does not stop at the US borders. The mere fact that it is more highly publicized here just means that maybe it is hidden better elsewhere. If you believe members of the parliaments of other nations do not receive kick backs from private companies, you should probably pull your head out of the sand.
Gun happy culture... You say that as though every US citizen is issued a gun at 18 and wears them on the hip at all times. It just isn't true. The simple facts are that most Americans do not even own guns, yet by our laws, have the right to if they wish. Also, crime per capita in the US is actually lower than Dominica, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Chile and Monserrat cite.
Again you are falling prey to exactly the same media hype that the less intelligent citizens of the US fall prey to. You are shown all these negatives about society and assume that it's all true and dangerous when the VAST majority of Americans will live their entire lives and never be involved in a gun related crime.
Assange does have a right to be worried, he needs to be worried that he may actually have to stand trial and could possibly be convicted of sexual assault in Sweden. However, Sweden's case has yet to be made, and I get the feeling that there will be repercussions of prosecutorial misconduct when it is. To get him extradited to the US, the US will have to actually charge him with a crime and go through the same process that Sweden has had to go through with the UK to get him sent.
Its not necessarily a matter of 300mil people in america. Its a factor of how many systems that piece of software might be installed on. Hell there are 11 PC's and Macs in my house alone, and that doesnt include my office, my roommate's office (fairly large company). So youre limiting yourself not by population but by consumption.
The additional issue is that, overall IT spending in the world last year was roughly 1.4-1.5 trillion. The US accounted for 1.04 trillion of that money. Roughly 66% of total IT spending. So again, it isnt 300million people, its 66% of your possible revenue stream.
Tell that to the board of directors for any major software/IT corp and you'll find it's a massive problem. The IT spending within the US increased by 5% last year and is estimated to increase by 8% this year.
World Databank reports that IT spending in the US (1.034 trillion) accounts for 3 times the next highest market, Japan (300billion). You seriously think cutting the US market out of that is a wise move for your software/hardware company?
You grew up pretty much exactly as I did. And I have basically the same experience as you did with the internet. Fear is a tactic used by those with something to gain against those who are sheep. "You are a horrible parent if you don't fear your neighbors and anyone online, buy our product to protect your children."
I've found the exact opposite. My daughter is far more intelligent than I was at her age. I have found that when I explain things to her, in a way that her level of experience can relate, everything is fine. I have and will not ever use the "because I said so" excuse due to the fact that it not only nests resentment in a child's mind, but also begins teaching them that they can dictate how/why things are done for no other reason than selfish wants.
"not an adult and should only be given the responsibility and respect that they earn"
If they earn it, then yes they damn well should.
"Many "good kids" get mixed up in drugs through no fault of parenting "
Bullshit, if you can't recognize when you kid walks into the house stoned out of his gourd, it is PRECISELY your fault as a parent for not recognizing it and dealing with it.
"meeting predatory people (online or elsewhere)"
I'm sorry, I'm in my 30's. I have been actively using the internet for 20 years and I have been exploring the world for 15 ish years. I can't even recall any time that I encountered these predators that you speak of. The difference is, I was taught NOT to place myself in situations that could or would be harmful to my mental or physical health, and I avoided them. Not because I was lorded over and had every move I made monitored, but because I was educated.
It also teaches them to be invasive little shits that believe it is their right to look in and spy on anyone and anything around them, similar to the asshats that are in power now trying to do the same with the internet. Children are people, and as such, are deserving of respect and privacy. I treat my daughter with the utmost respect and I provide her with the privacy she as a human being deserves. In return she provides me with respect and privacy. I have taught her the rights and wrongs of civilized society, the internet etc and because of that, she is capable of not only avoiding hazardous situations, but making sure that I know about it if one comes up. I want my daughter to experience life and reality so that when she is an adult, she will not be living in some falsified, dreamed up utopian reality.
I know first hand what it is as a child to not have any rights and as an adult, as well as when I was a child, it infuriates me. Providing a prime example, denial of due process to teens and children. I was sent to the store by my father one night at around 2am to get a refill of his insulin medication. He sent me because he had lost the feeling in his leg and was not able to drive himself. I was 16. On the way to the store, I was pulled over by police and ticketed for "exceeding the speed limit" when in reality, I was at a dead stop at a traffic light. The officer even told me when he ticketed me that "it's 2am and you should not be out driving, but I know at some point you were speeding and you deserve this." When I went to court for the ticket, the judge called my name and docket number. When I approached the podium, the judge stated: "Your fine is $550, due by 5pm today. Next case." When I raised an objection, the judge told me that because I was under the age of 18 in that county, I was not allowed to enter a plea of not guilty and fight the ticket.
So please, continue raising your children with no rights to privacy or any others and watch them turn into the spying, peeping tom types that we already have in the establishment.

that makes sense and I can definitely get behind that. Thanks for the clarification, as I am definitely not a viewer of any NCIS or CSI's

your keyboard may have been involved, but I can almost guarantee typing wasn't how you built those arm muscles... ;)
wait... pc's aren't supposed to be making clicking, clacking, whirring sounds? Where's my hardware diagnostic kit.....
mayhaps, but your country code wasn't 01....

How much ISK did they have to sell to make $229,000? 6.1 Billion or so?
6.1 billion is slightly less than what I make legitimately on the market monthly.
