  1. Re:Airport is great technology, but... on Apple's New, Improved Airport · · Score: 1

i have the SMC, and it does everything you say 3 10/100 ports + uplink, print server, wireless, serial to hook up a modem...but you're wrong about # of users..the SMC supports 254 users, and most others i looked at support 50+ ..

  2. SMC Barricade Wireless Router SMC7004AWBR on Choosing a Router/Firewall for the Home LAN · · Score: 2, Informative

I previously had a netgear rt311 on my network in my apartment at school..and when I graduated, I decided I wanted a wireless router, since I've got a couple of laptops, and my girlfriend has one as well. I looked at all the wireless offerings, and it came down to the D-link and the SMC..they're made by the same manufacturer..but the SMC has both a lifetime warranty and mac address restriction of the wireless network.

In one $200 box, I get:
o wireless access point supporting, i believe, 255 users.
o 3 port 10/100 switched hub, plus the wan port.
o firewall/router with plenty of configurability
o print server, which works in both linux and windows.

the administration interface is easy to use, can keep pretty good logs if you want, and allows for the network to be buttoned up pretty tight.

it'll even hook up to a modem via a serial port, if you want to share a modem connection..

They've got a phone module that plugs into the springboard slot of your Handspring Visor. You can auto dial numbers of contacts, etc. And since the phone is attached directly to the Visor, It also doubles as a wireless 14.4 modem, so you can check email from the PDA/phone.

  4. how is this different from slashdot? on Deja Linking Ads Within Usenet Posts? · · Score: 2

Sure, the page that ends up being linked to contains a product, but it's also linking to the other part of deja, the consumer reviews section. One of the things you can do from that learn more about a product. This seems strikingly familiar to when the slashdot guys decide to plug everything (everything2? i've lost track of the site) and link words in slashdot articles to nodes at everything. On that example page, I didn't even see a way to buy the modem, only to read a little bit about it, and to provide information about it to others. Sounds like an improvement to the service in my book. Maybe not in terms of useability for me, but for the general browsing public.

  5. retired people have less stress? on Is Technology Killing Leisure Time? · · Score: 1

"that adults aged 35 and younger were the most stressed people in the population. Nearly seven in 10 said they were "somewhat" to "extremely" stressed, an astonishing contrast to adults over 65: 31 percent of them said they had almost no stress in their lives at all. "

Gee, what a useful statistic for katz to quote. retired people have more stress in their lives than those who work. wow. A comparison to say, the 35-50 age group would have been a lot more fair, and probably would have done a better job of making his point.

Other than that, I do agree with most of the article. I often feel like it's tough to escape my work, whether it's (almost) always being reachable via my cell, or bringing work home with me (well, leaving it at work and sshing in)..But that's ok, because I really like what i'm doing. Isn't that what's most important? if you like your work, it ceases to be work..

A major point behind sharing your code with others is to they can learn from what you did, and vice-versa. That way, we don't have to learn everything from scratch. If you end up not sharing this code, well, you probably will on the next project.

There *is* a new wolfenstein coming out. It's being released by grey matter studios (formerly xatrix), under license from id. There were some early screenshots released at e3, and the atmosphere looks really amazing. From what I understand, they're trying to stay very faithful to the original wolfenstein, but in a 3-d quake iii based environment.

  12. Chuck D on music over the internet on Are MP3 Web Sites Unfair to Indie Artists? · · Score: 1

He (Chuck D) seems to have a lot of interesting opinions about online music distribution and the like. He tried to give an entire album away over the internet, since his label (def jam) was holding back on releasing it. There was a big fight w/ the label, and Public Enemy ended up leaving the label. His website, http://www.public-enemy.com has a bunch of mp3s and stuff, as well as essays written by Chuck, about this kind of stuff. Pretty neat.

I have a feeling that they'll make out ok in this whole deal, fiscally, which is cool.
