In our company, a pharma, it's 1:10. It's not all about how many users you have. On the back end it's how many systems you have properly centralized and configured to run smoothly, and by how much these systems are growing. We also have people separated into duties so there is less gear shifting from problems that span different expertise instead of cross training every single person. We have people that handle documentation procedures, some that handle Windows, some for UNIX, people for helpdesk and desktop support, Lotus Notes mail admins, Notes programmers, Oracle DBAs, etc. And there is redundancy so that if some are out on vacation or sick, someone can cover them.

You imagine that the first culture to walk across the Bering Strait walked all the way to the Southern tip of South America without settling. Get yourself a textbook and learn the real history of this world. Go buy something like Guns Germs and Steel and find out about how all these native people took it away from someone else and someone before them. Seems to me that something that calls itself a nation should be creating its own solutions instead of begging for handouts. Not much more of a nation than a gaming clan.

My feed reader is web server based (MonkeyChow) and pulls once an hour, although I've spread the polling so that the whole feed list is done over five periods in that hour. I have almost 270 feeds, most of which post infrequently, and a few like Digg that post like a firehose. As low as I thought Digg was on the class scale, Reddit was even lower and had a higher volume of crap.
