    or in New Hampshire with 7,000 votes keeping Gore from beating Bush (Nader took 22,000 BTW)

    or in Wisconsin with 6,000 votes keeping Bush from beating Gore


    I don't know about you, but most people (I hope) only have one vote. Not 10,000. So unless you can point out a case where one vote would change the election, one particular individual couldn't have changed things with their vote.

    Given the percentage of non-voters, no one ever has the mandate anymore.

    The single most striking thing I heard watching election night coverage was a comment that while voter turnout in Los Angeles was ~70%, that the reason for that was that some official (attourney general? I don't remember) had gone through and removed people from the rolls who were dead or gone, and that after adjusting for that the voter turnout was in line with previous years.

    So it seems that, at least in Los Angeles, that half the registered voters who don't vote have a damn good reason for it: they're dead. Hardly mandate-preventing.

    Of course, if you can elect dead people...

    IMO, the parties should change the voting system for their primaries to something sane. Don't have to go through all the rigors of changing the constitution, and it seems like it would definitely benefit the party that did it.

    Once people get used to it, then we could see about changing the constitution.

    Thanks for the info. I knew there was a court case that established the precedent, but didn't know what the argument was.

    Still, it seems like the tenth amendment pretty specifically addresses where such powers go... wasn't that the argument of state's rights advocates before the Civil War?

    I need to study history some more...

    Supreme court: Wields extreme power, but is not directly elected. They are appointed by a president, who is elected by an electoral college, and approved by the senate, who is elected in a popular vote.

    The founding fathers structured it this way for other reasons than what you've heard....


    Actually, the supreme court's power isn't derived from the founding father's structure. Find in the Constitution where the Supreme Court is given the power to decide what is and is not constitutional.

    If it's really so important to have a diamond shape, instead of a pyramid, then we should tax both the richest and poorest people the most, and people in the middle the least.

    I find it hard to take an argument seriously that would object to all the lower-class people becoming middle-class. There's some good insight in there, but it needs refinement.

    Quite possibly what really matters is the amount of power, not wealth, that is given to a small percentage of the populace.

    While many people have mentioned Handhelds.org, I just thought I'd point out that Transmeta is working on PocketLinux, a Linux distribution for handhelds, and is initially targeting the V-Tech Helio and the iPaq. Information at wwww.pocketlinux.com.

    ) Now, let's look at Linux. No graphical interface, natively anyway. To get the GUI, you need an extra layer of programming. Now, look at the Palm. GUI through and though, no extra layer.

    2) This is a good thing. Why? Because PDA's are obviously *NOT* desktop machine, or servers! They have a very limited capacity by todays standards. Every extra layer on something that small means more CPU, more memory, and more waiting.


    I completely disagree. We're not talking about a palm, with a ~12 Mhz processor (IIRC). It's an iPAQ. It's got an over 200 Mhz processor. It's more powerful than my old desktop. It can afford to have an extra layer that gives you the extra flexibility to choose which UI you want, and keeps the UI from crashing the whole system.

    This won't happen any time soon, I think we have to wait until industrialization runs its course and we run out of our fossil fuels.

    The idea that so-called "fossil fuels" are non-renewable is an assumption. There are oil fields that were dry that have massively confused scientists by starting to fill back up.

    If you don't like this patent then attack the rules that made it possible, not Amazon. Amazon are a company persuing their fudiciary responsibilities to their shareholders, and of course they're going to take every avenue possible to increase their revenue streams.

    Personally, I'm attacking Amazon's revenue streams. I just bought over $200 worth of books, and did it from Barnes & Noble instead of Amazon, solely because of this stupid patent.

    The only service pack issued has been to address compatibility concerns with older apps never meant to be run in Windows 2000.

    Umm... No. The list of bugs fixed in Service Pack 1 is here, continued here, and finished off here. That's more than one bug, and more than just compatability with old apps.

    That's stupid. The only way you could possibly believe this is if you think all designers tailor-make stuff to solve exactly one problem. Telescopes weren't originally made for looking at stars. Kleenex were made for removing make-up.

    If you think it won't work, try giving actual reasons for it.

    I swear, /. readers grasp ONE concept and then they get some kind of vapor lock of the brain.

    So either:
    a) you don't read Slashdot.
    b) you've never grasped a concept.
    c) you have vapor lock of the brain.

    Regardless, you haven't made an intelligent comment.

    But we should also realize that no matter what new technology comes along, it will not nor can it ever completely replace the paper book.

    That's silly. Yes, stuff printed on paper is easiest to read right now. But there's no reason to believe that a future technology couldn't make reading stuff on paper as ridiculous as reading an entire book on a computer screen is now.

    There's something to be said for being able to hold money in your hand. The flexible paper, the weight, the simple fact that you know it is something tangible.

    Considering that people can spend somewhere around ~300 dollars for textbooks for a single year of school, you could make a very expensive "digital book" that would still be economical if textbooks were available free in digital form. I think the obstacles to their adoption will fall. Though I still plan to keep my physical copies of The Lord of the Rings...

    On Indrema's web site there is a blurb describing how great it is for Hotels and Resorts. Has anyone expressed interest in this? How aggresively are you marketing to this group? Do hotels or resorts currently have any consoles or set-top boxes?

    the only problem right now is getting around CSS (their encryption/scrambling system)

    I've been wondering this for a while, what could be made against building DeCSS into a DVD player? It wouldn't help pirates copy things, and it would allow fair use. I'm guessing the bad guys wouldn't see things this way, but does anyone have any idea what arguments they could use?

    Of course not. :) I'm referring to things like Andarial's fire resistance, which is -50 in the data file, becoming 206 because they used unsigned numbers, or never getting the max value for the AC on armor or the modifiers on magic items because they didn't know how to use their random number generator.

    For any who doubt that end-users can fix Blizzard North's errors better than they can, I've got a patch/mod that fixes a ton of the errors in the data files at mods.diabloii.net/arthondo/uthaur.html, and their are a number of other mods that make more drastic changes as well.
