    RoR: What people build websites with because they want to be kewl and later switch to PHP when they realize it simply does not scale, complete with acerbic "I wanted to believe" blog entry and everything

    Don't mistale me for a RoR fanboy, but, well, it is my favorite tool for building websites and according to this presentation it can be made to scale just nicely :)

  2. Re:Simple on The Quest for the Car of the Future · · Score: 1

    A little number from practical experience: I drive a Prius (with an AC powered by the electrical system). Here in Germany, at about 25-30C in full sunshine, having the AC running over a short commute (~15km) makes a difference of maybe 0.1l/100km in fuel consumption. I can't measure it more precisely, since this is also the lower limit of the instruments' precision. On longer drives (where the initial rapid-cooldown thing plays a smaller part) it might be even less. Where the AC really eats fuel is in the winter, since heating is done via waste engine heat, which means it has to keep the engine running for longer periods.

    Here is a great tool to visualize your kernel and then print a poster of it http://fcgp.sourceforge.net/

    I'm one of the maintainers of this thing -- and I have to say that it's effectively not maintained these days. So don't be too surprised if it doesn't completely work ;)

    you do need a big printer for it if you want a readable poster though ;-).( and yes you also can stick 16 A4's to a wooden plate but that's just plain silly)

    Well, 16xA4 will be a bit small (~0.8x1.1m). I have a printout of a 2.4 kernel at a bit more than 1x1m, and it's hard to read.

    From what I know, the weapons were legally bought collectibles. Modded to be unusable when sold, but apparently he managed to undo that (likely minimal) modding. The images they showed on TV were of a pretty old hunting rifle and some really old front-loading pistol or the like. Not sure if these were the actual guns he used or just examples of what's available though.

    The explosives were apparently self-made pipe bombs.

    The mandatory military service doesn't even enter the picture here. For one, he wasn't in there yet AFAIK. Also the military nowadays needs far less recruits than are available, so his chance of being actually "drafted" should have been pretty slim.

He's simply got to proceed asking "And why was that? And that?" until it comes to something he recognizes.

    In other words, all that is needed is a nice, understandable backtrace.

    In the case of operator overloading, the code that looks like one thing can mean another. In your poor example, comments can be simply ingored[...]

    MyString foo = "Hello";
    foo.concat(" World");

    Looks pretty clear, right? Well, unless you are aware of that:

    class MyString extends String
    {
    public String concat(String aString) {
    return aString + this;
    }
    }

    Of course I'm aware that this will not occur as likely as operator overloading misuse, but I think you get my point. I personally prefer using a language that aims to fit the needs of competent programmers over one that tries to be something even lawyers can use ;)

    A true rim-shot makes a sort of "tock" noise if the drummer holds the bass of the stick on the snare head, or a light "click" noise otherwise. Those sounds are usually used for accompaniment to quiet jazz passages, and are almost never used as accents for comedians.

    Well, I'm a drummer, and for me (and the other drummers I know) a rim-shot means hitting the rim and the head of the snare at the same time, resulting in a very loud shot-like sound. That's where the "shot" in "rim-shot" comes from :)

    Well, I have a Quantum Fireball lct15 at 4400rpm and I can't hear it spinning (air-cooled non-overclocked wimpy 400MHz celeron). Head movements are clearly recognizable, but not loud. It's more of an informational "hey, I'm doing something, in case you're interested" thing.

    First off: I'm from Germany.

    I'd like to be free to keep more than 50% of my income, without having it all go to taxes to support dubious socialist programs that I'll never make use of, because I *work* for a living.

    Unfortunately some people can not work or employers don't want them (cause they're too old or whatever).

    I'd like to be free to live in a country where I can pay for health care that doesn't leave me sitting in an emergency room for three hours waiting for a Keflex prescription for strepped throat, while homeless heroin-addicts with needles broken off in their arms come in after me, sit beside me, play show-and-tell with their pus, and then get served before I do, despite the fact that I'm a tax payer and they're not

    Well, perhaps they needed treatment more desperately than you? The primary job of medics is to help people, not to make money...

    I'd like to be free to live in a land where what is played on TV and radio stations is based on market demands, not on CRTC 40% Canadian Content regulations[...]

    Well, comparing TV programs here in Germany shows that private TV stations have the better movies (good), but their news and scientific etc "shows" (I don't remember the right word for it right now) are typically utter crap (heavily biased, reporting false information, ...). I'm very glad that we have "government" TV.

    I actually think PenguinPlay and that one fit together quite nicely. They are defining a standard client environment (i.e. for people wanting to play games) while PPlay is assembling/defining a suite of game *development* code/tools.

    Anyway, well talk with them.

    PS: Yup, I know that the PPlay homepage looks pretty dead. Our Webmaster disappeared some time ago and the new one starts to completely reorganize it. Will take some time. In the meanwhile the FAQ is really up-to-date. Promise ;)
